White On White: Arctic Foxes In Canada

An Arctic fox emerges from the mist. Apart from its nose and eyes, it is barely visible against the snowy backdrop. The award-winning image was one of many captured by British photographer Anna Henly at the Seal River, in Manitoba, Canada.

She flew to the remote region with photographer and biologist Matthias Breiter hoping to see polar bears. Instead they were greeted by a group of inquisitive Arctic foxes, and she spent 10 days photographing them.

"They are very curious animals and were coming up to investigate us," said Anna. "They are scavengers and so they were looking for anything they can eat or were squabbling with each other over any food."

"They took to sleeping outside the hut as well. It was nice to wake up in the morning and see a fox curled up. They would yawn at you or scowl at you."

She added: "It was definitely a highlight of my life. It was wonderful being somewhere so remote - it was true wilderness."

They were tame in nature.

Women prefer men with no chest hair

What's in a name? Well, for bank robbers it can range from what they look like to how they act during the heist. Have a look at these nine thieves and determine for yourself.

1. "Handsome Guy Bandit"

You don't have to look pretty to commit robberies. Take it from Steve Milam, the bank heistman who admitted to holding up 11 financial institutions in the Dallas area while wearing a $800, Hollywood-calibre "handsome guy" latex mask to disguise his ugly mug. Don't hate him because he's beautiful.

2. "Krusty the Clown Bandit"

We don't know what a "Scottish clown wig" is, but that's what Toronto police called the getup that prompted the moniker "Krusty the Clown Bandit" for a man who robbed a bank in Scarborough around Halloween. Despite the presence of a comedica cartoon character, no one was laughing. Hoo-hoo-ha!

3. "Ho-Hum Bandit"

You'd think the life of a carefree, on-the-run bank robber would be exciting and adrenaline-filled. Apparently that wasn't the case for Adam Lynch, the Irishman dubbed the "Ho-Hum Bandit" in several Colorado-area bank robberies. The thief's bored look earned him his nickname, not to mention the fact that he yawned during one of the heists. He was nabbed by authorities in an Irish pub in downtown Denver after his woman ratted on him. Maybe he'll lead a more exciting life behind bars.

4. "Brady Bunch Bandit"

Bobby? Peter? Greg? We're still guessing which actor on "The Brady Bunch" a Denver-area bank robber resembles. His name came from witness accounts which described him as looking like one of the boys on the 1970s sitcom, which makes sense because there's no way the FBI is that in tune with pop culture.

5. "Geezer Bandit"

Whipper-snappers beware! San Diego may be known for its large retired population, but you don't want to get in the way of the "Geezer Bandit." He's responsible for more than a dozen bank robberies in California and still remains at large, three years after his first heist was made public. It's been nearly a year since the last "Geezer Bandit" robbery, so it's possible he's hung it up to collect Social Security now.

6. "Elmer Fudd Bandit"

This robber has yet to be caught, which means he is vewy, vewy quiet. The "Elmer Fudd" bandit sports a flannel shirt and bald cap under his ball cap, earning him his nickname. "Fudd" has hit five banks in the Chicagoland area, so he isn't just huntin' wabbits. (Note: the wascally "Elmer Fudd Bandit" has since been trapped!)

7. "Groucho Bandit"

This bandit wasn't caught stealing duck soup and animal crackers from a kitchen. No, he's on the lam after two bank heists in Arizona. The fake mustachioed man wore a hat and heavy rimmed black glasses, giving him a resemblance to American comedian Groucho Marx. But the FBI isn't laughing, because they still can't find him for his monkey business.

8. "Stringer Bell Bandit"

The so-called "Stringer Bell Bandit" isn't as well known for his business savvy in the underworld of organized crime as he is for his resemblance of a character from HBO's "The Wire." Rather, he's a different kind of criminal -- one who's robbed at least five banks in one month in downtown Chicago. Let's hope there's a more peaceful end to this robber's crime spree than there was to that of his fictional Baltimore counterpart.

9. "Cookie Monster Bandit"

He didn't say, "Me want cookie!" but the "Cookie Monster Bandit" did demand money when he robbed a Florida gas station, and he did threaten violence. The Ocala heist occurred at a gas station when an armed man wearing a Cookie Monster hat took cash from the store's register then fled in a vehicle. Surprisingly, no cookies were reported stolen from the gas station.

1. New York City Spaghetti Packaging

Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. Alex Creamer, a student at the University of Central Lancashire, UK, came up with this brilliant idea of a New-York centric packaging for spaghetti. The brief was to package one of 5 difficult items i.e. eggs, a rose, custard powder, spaghetti or marbles. He chose spaghetti. The spaghetti sits on a 3d model of the Chrysler building that was modeled on CAD by my friend Ben Thorpe. And then modeled out of high density foam at uni. Creating a spaghetti model of the Chrysler building!

2. Break it CD Packaging

Are you stressed? Do you need stress relief? Then you will like a CD package like this. It is made of potato starch and so is easy to be break. What's more, the original purpose of this package is to let you break it. OK, go ahead. Break it and relieve your stress.

3. Coffin Shaped Cigarette Packaging

Coffin Shaped Cigarette Packaging by R.J. Reynolds. Daily people are dying throughout the world of diseases caused by smoking. This package concept shows how close this problem is to us. As every day each smoker carries this problem in his/her pocket. They carry death.

4. Bread Packaging

This snack ain't politically correct, but it's rather clever. Or should we say racist? Here's Black Melon Bread from Japan, featuring the character Afro Tanaka from the anime series by Masaharu Noritsuke.

5. Peelable Smirnoff Bottles

We now have new Smirnoff Caipiroska to peel. Designed by JWT Brazil, the fruity vodkas come in a peelable package, which imitate the skin of each drink's respective fruit. Just peel the wooden crate off and drink the fruit wine out!

6. Meat Bermuda Packaging

Internet-shop Weird Clothing (consider the name!) offers bermuda shorts with meat print. The appropriate package not forgotten with "Human meat" label.

7. Parmesan Cheese Pencil Packaging

The German ad agency Kolle Rebbe designed chunks of Parmesan cheese shaped like pencils. Flakes are shaved off with a manual pencil sharpener.

8. Hijos De Villa Tequila Packaging

The Hijos de Villa Tequila gun redefines the term "shooter." The toy is shaped like a 45, but instead of containing bullets, its loaded with 200 ml of genuine Mexican tequila.

9. Recycled Shoe Packaging

Newton Running based in Boulder, Colorado, is striving to produce shoes that have a very low impact on the environment. The company wanted to also look at the way the shoes were packaged and see if there was an alternative to the conventional printed cardboard boxes. Newton worked with TDA Advertising and Design to develop a new package that is less box and more carton. The new package is a molded design that uses 100% post consumer recycled material. The shape of the carton fits the shoe eliminating the need to pack it with tissue paper. Instead of stuffing the shoes with even more paper, the company includes a pair of socks in one and a reusable shoe bag in the other.

Creative packaging designed to promote Rellana Hair range of yarn.

Apple Officially Reveals The iPhone 5

And just like that, months and months of breathless speculation have finally come to an end. Apple's Phil Schiller has just officially announced the new iPhone 5 at the company's massive press event here in San Francisco, less than a year since its predecessor was unveiled.

Some of the news won't come as much of a shock considering the sheer volume of rumors and leaks lately (even Apple let some details slip earlier today) — I'm going to resist the temptation to pontificate on every new feature as it's revealed (for now, anyway), so let's get right down to it.

The iPhone 5

* We can finally put the debate to rest — Apple's newest mobile juggernaut is called the iPhone 5 (despite actually being the sixth iPhone to hit the market). It's 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S, 18% thinner, and crafted out of (what else?) glass and aluminum.

* Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 will begin on Friday, September 14, and the device will ship to lucky consumers starting on September 21. As usual, the device will be available in 16, 32, and 64GB models, which will cost $199, $299, and $399 respectively with a two-year contract from AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint.

* The long-rumored (and handsome) two-toned design is indeed legitimate, as is the new iPhone's larger 4-inch Retina Display. And yes, that 16:9 display runs at 1136 x 640 with five rows of icons. According to Schiller, it's "the most accurate display in the industry" because the touch sensors are embedded in the display as well.

* As expected, Apple has also unveiled a brand new chipset for the iPhone 5: the A6, which Schiller says is a full two times faster than the A5 chip in the iPhone 4S

* The iPhone 4S's battery life wasn't anything to write home about, but the iPhone 5 seems equipped to do much better — 8 hours of 3G talk time, as well as 8 hours of 3G and LTE web browsing to be precise.

* The iPhone's audio system has been bolstered with a smaller (but improved speaker). There are also now three microphones in the mix: one on the front, one on the back, and another on the bottom.

* That oft-rumored miniature Dock Connector is real: it's all-digital, has eight pins and it's called "Lightning." Yes, there's an adapter for it, but no word yet on exactly what it will cost you.

Connectivity

* It's hardly a surprise at this point, but the iPhone 5 packs support for Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T's LTE networks here in the States. What's really impressive is that combined that LTE support with 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n Wi-If onto a single "ultra fast" chip.

* Despite what a handful of leaks pointed to in the weeks leading up to the event, there's been no mention of an integrated NFC chip yet.

Camera

* Smartphone cameras are really starting to give their point-and-shoot brethren a run for their money (think Nokia's PureView and HTC's ImageSense tech), but instead of running up the megapixel count, Apple has stuck with an 8-megapixel camera. That said, the backside-illuminated sensor is smaller, and features much better low-light performance (finally!).

* App developers may be bummed to know that the camera now also has a built-in panorama mode. The revamped camera also supports 1080p video capture, and users can now snap photos while recording video at the same time. I wonder how HTC feels about that.
