Dear Poet: National Poetry Month 2013

with 0 comments
Happy National Poetry Month 2013!

It's hard to believe that when the Academy of American Poets launched National Poetry Month in 1996, only a few hundred people participated. Today, it is the largest literary celebration in the world with special events taking place in thousands of schools, libraries, bookstores, and communities nationwide. Here are some ways to participate in National Poetry Month this year:

Sign up for Poem-A-Day, which delivers a new poem to your inbox every morning.

Spread the Word: Download the official 2013 National Poetry Month logo for promoting your poetry events this month. And, promote your events on our national Events Calendar.

Learn about what's happening with poetry in your state by taking a looking at our poetry maps

Epistles (Letter Poems)

This April, during National Poetry Month 2013, the Academy of American Poets is celebrating the role that correspondence has played in poets' lives, as well as in their poems:

Poets Via Post: Advice to a Young Poet

Rainer Maria Rilke's early twentieth century correspondence with Franz Kappus, a 19-year-old officer cadet and poet, has proved to be some of the most read poetic advice. Read postcards of advice to young writers from contemporary poets like Rita Dove, Elizabeth Robinson, Mark Wunderlich, and others here.

At the Academy's 2012 Poets Forum we asked poets, including Brenda Hillman, Randall Mann, and Patricia Smith, to share personal stories about their most meaningful correspondence.
Dear Poet Project: Send us Your Letters!
This April the Academy of American Poets is inviting young people to engage with poetry by handwriting letters to the distinguished poets who serve on our Board of ChancellorsSelect letters will receive a personalized reply from the poets and will be featured on Poets.org in May.
Here is a wonderful letter we received from National Student Poet Luisa Banchoff in Arlington, Virginia to the poet Naomi Shihab Nye.
