It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack
of what is found there.
—William Carlos Williams
Dear Friend,
We have been busy at the Academy of American Poets this National Poetry Month.
As you’ve seen, last week we rolled out a new design for Poem-a-Day, and, I’m excited to share, we just signed a deal with King Features to syndicate Poem-a-Day. This means that the new, previously unpublished poems we are publishing during the week will be available to editors at a wide range of newspapers, news websites, and magazines. The reach and readership of Poem-a-Day will grow exponentially!
It’s been a generation since new poems have been available to daily news readers. We’re thrilled to help renew this tradition, which will bring greater visibility to contemporary poets.
While we will make the poems available for free, the benefits of expanding the access to poetry in this way are undeniable. Readers who would never have otherwise encountered a poem, will find them amid current events.
As you are one of our dedicated readers, I’m asking that you please donate to support Poem-a-Day. Now, more than ever, we need your help to underwrite our time and efforts. We’ve already raised more than $16,000 toward our goal from supporters of poetry like you, but we still have a way to go. Thanks to Abrams books, every dollar we raise up to $10,000 will be matched.
Your support will enable us to offer, in the words of William Carlos Williams, “what is found there” to millions more readers, and for that I am grateful. Please donate today.
