A biker in Chennai yesterday was knocked off his motorbike and fell 40 feet from a flyover. Despite having serious injuries to his face and being in critical condition, he survived the accident and is fighting for his life. There are similar stories of Indians who faced life threatening accidents and lived to tell the tale.
1. The biker who was hit by fighter jet debris.
Loon Singh was on his motorbike riding towards the village of Balmer in Rajasthan when an Indian Air Force MiG 27 crashed into a nearby field and chunks of burning debris knocked him off his bike. The doctors were stunned to find that he only suffered from minor burns and a fractured hand.
2. The mahout who lived.
Vijayan and his assistant, Devan, were attacked by their elephant Gireeshan as they removed the coir rope around the animal. Unable to escape, Vijayan was lifted on the elephant's tusks and hurled onto the ground, still conscious, and was miraculously not trampled by the elephant. Vijayan battled for life at the Alappuzha Medical College hospital, a fight he won after a two-month treatment.
3. A little girl who survived a fall from a Mumbai high-rise.
4-year-old Pari Yadav was on the 10th floor at a creche in a Navi Mumbai high rise. The child reportedly fell off the balcony and landed on a bushy tree that cushioned her fall. She was admitted to the hospital for thigh and knee injuries.
4. He survived the tsunami but lost everything else.
Kuchavava Raghuvaran was returning home after fishing in the morning, in December 2004, when a tsunami hit his coastal town in Kerala. His fishing boat was engulfed in water as he swam and clutched on to a palm tree. He was fortunate enough that his family too had survived. However they lost their house and their possessions. In the spring of 2015, a charity helped rebuild their home and get their lives back together.
5. A bizarre birth.
A newborn baby girl survived for nearly two hours on train tracks after falling through a moving train toilet when her mother prematurely gave birth. The parents realized that the child had fallen through the bowl two stations later and reported it to railway officials. A pediatrician in Ahmadabad stated that it was a miracle that the child weighing 1.46 kg survived on the tracks for such a long period.
6. The 46 nurses who escaped from ISIS.
A group of 46 nurses from Kerala were recruited to work in a hospital in the Iraqi city of Tikrit until it came under siege from the ISIS. The nurses, who were being accommodated at the hospital, had nowhere to go and were trapped in the building. Captured by the terrorists, they kept in constant touch with the Indian Embassy in Baghdad and the Chief Minister of Kerala. The militants took them to Mosul where they were later taken to Erbil and flown back to India.
7. Amitabh Bachchan.
The "Coolie" incident in 1982 led to the Bollywood star's second birth. Injured and bleeding from a fighting scene accident left Mr. Bachchan close to death until doctors injected adrenaline into his heart. This made his toes move which was a sure sign that he was back in the realm of the living. Bachchan was in hospital for many months until he made a full recovery and resumed shooting for the movie. In 1983, when Coolie released, director Manmohan Desai rewrote the ending of the film to have Mr Bachchan's character recover from an operation, just like he had done in real life. It would be inappropriate for the man who had cheated death for real not to do so on screen, the director said.
