You need to take a look at 8 such places. 1. Kiribati Kiribati is located halfway between Australia and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The government is in talks with Fiji to purchase 5000 acres of land where it will be relocating its population of little over 1 lakh. The country consists of 32 atolls (low lying coral islands) and only one raised island to which most of the population has shifted. Levels of high tide reaching peoples' doorsteps is a scary sign that their homes may be gone soon. 2. Maldives This archipelago nation south west of India is only 1.3 metres above sea level and is economically dependent on its tourism industry. Most of us paint a picture of the Maldives being a tropical paradise with pristine blue waters and white sand beaches that are graced with luxury hotels offering guests holidays they will always remember. But the downside is that a three-foot rise in sea level will drown the atolls.  Maldives made it to the headlines when the country's politicians had a cabinet meeting underwater to raise awareness about climate change. 3. Torres Strait Locals who live on these islands near Australia and Papua New Guinea have often woken up to their bedrooms flooded with water from the high tide. Some of its 274 islands are already submerged. 4. The Solomon Islands A team of French researchers placed a marker on the beach to check the rising sea levels. Seven years later, this marker was submerged under water.  5. Micronesia Like the Torres Strait and Solomon Islands, Micronesia is no longer safe, even for the dead as cemeteries lie submerged under water. Rising sea levels are corroding away the mountainous islands and coral atolls leaving many Micronesians homeless.  6. Bangladesh This South Asian nation is a delta region where many rivers drain out into the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh has been suffering from severe flooding, especially in the Sunderban region, in the southern part of the country during the monsoons. Climate change is not making the situation any better. 7. Tuvalu The highest point in this country of six atolls and three reef islands is 5 metres above sea level. The Prime Minister of the island nation had this to say in the UN General Assembly: "We live in constant fear of the adverse impacts of climate change. For a coral atoll nation, sea level rise and more severe weather events loom as a growing threat to our entire population. The threat is real and serious, and is of no difference to a slow and insidious form of terrorism against us." Mangroves have been planted along the coastline to somehow slow down the rising sea level.  8. from The Uses of the Body by Deborah Landau Posted: 13 Apr 2015 03:33 AM PDT View this email on a browser Forward to a friend April 13, 2015   from The Uses of the Body   Deborah Landau Before you have kids, you get a dog.   Then when you get a baby, you wait for the dog to die.   When the dog dies, it’s a relief.   When your babies aren’t babies, you want a dog again.   The uses of the body, you see where they end.   But we are only in the middle, only mid-way.   The organs growing older in their plush pockets ticking toward the wearing out.   We are here and soon won’t be (despite the cozy bed stuffed dog pillows books clock).   The boy with his socks on and pajamas. A series of accidental collisions.   Pressure in the chest. Everyone breathing for now, in and out, all night.   These sad things, they have to be. I go into the kitchen thinking to sweeten myself.   Boiled eggs won’t do a thing. Oysters. Lysol. Peanut butter. Gin.   Big babyface, getting fed. I am twenty. I am thirty. Measuring 44 inches/112cms in length, it is half a million times bigger than the ecoli bacteria upon which it is based. The artist wanted to create a sculpture that reflected in the process of being made the incredible scale and complexity of this microbiological world. Heavy cutting equipment, rappelling gear and a sheer amount of guts were involved in robbing over 70 deposit boxes from a 60-year-old safe deposit company in London. The thieves made off with precious stones and money, now estimated at $300 million. The jewels are already on their way out of England.  But this is not the first time the world has seen a heist of this scale. Here're the classics, the kind that the crew of Oceans 11 would have in their history books. 1. Hatten, London Millions in valuables were stolen over the 2015 Easter weekend, from a safety deposit company in Hatten, a jewellery district. The total haul is estimated to be worth almost $300 million (£200m).  2. Carlton Intercontinental Hotel, France One armed man was able to steal gemstones and watches valued at $136 million (€103 million) from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, during a jewellery exhibition. This is said to be the biggest heist ever in France, and among the biggest heists of all time. 3. Gohana, Haryana It was a robbery straight out of a movie. Robbers dug a spacious 2.5 feet wide tunnel through 125 feet of earth and concrete, and when they hit the surface, it was in the Punjab National Bank's vault in Haryana! The tunnel began in a nearby empty house, and the men looted cash and valuables worth crores of rupees in the daring heist.  According to investigating police officials, 24 kgs of gold and silver jewellery, and 60,000 rupees ($976; £610) had been recovered, and arrests had been made. 4. John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York It is now known as the Lufthansa Heist, and might have been the highlight of American gangster Jimmy Burke's career. It was, at its time, also the most lucrative cash theft in American history - $8 million in cash and jewels. It is interesting to note that since the Airport was controlled by two crime families, Jimmy had to take permissions from both of them for it! 5. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Massachusetts  Posing as Boston cops, robbers entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, handcuffed the guards in the basement, and made off with 13 pieces of stolen artwork. With names like Rembrandt and Vermeer, the estimated loss was $500 million. This is said to be the biggest art heist in history.  6. Banco Central in Fortaleza, Brazil Concrete and steel were no match for these robbers, who posed as a landscape company, and drilled a tunnel under the Banco Central in Fortaleza, Brazil. They made their way into (and out of) a vault, stealing $69.8 million. In Brazilian currency, this was 3 tons of money.  7. India. Driving in India is like, well, driving in India. There's traffic, people, strange roadblocks, and random debris in every direction. And cows. Oh, we love our cows. When they've put in a hard day getting milked for milk and urine. Indian cows pretty much go wherever the hell they want. Just like our traffic, they don't follow the rules of the road. And when they hit the road, they take their time. After Google's self driving car program made its debut on American roads, last year, famous cartoon website The Oatmeal took it for a spin, to find that it drove "timid". (In fact, Google had made a more ferocious prototype, but gave that up. ) How is this relevant? Well, apparently Americans also see livestock show up on their roads, and Google wants to ensure cows don't ruin your ride. For this, it patented what is, in simple terms a timer. The car basically waits it out for a large object in front of it to move (the object being cows, among other things). If the cow doesn't move, then car plots a course around it. But here's the catch YOU CANNOT PLOT A COURSE AROUND SOMETHING ON AN INDIAN ROAD.  Especially with a car that doesn't take fast turns! When dealing with a cow that refuses to move, you are also dealing with a traffic jam the cow has caused. You just have to hope. And pray to the cow.
