[Fropki] Weird Indian Tribal Traditions

Despite all the technological developments humans have made over the centuries, there are some sections of society who prefer to live with their older customs and traditions. It is not that they are not aware of how easy technology has made human life. Instead, they just choose to live with their older customs and traditions. While we know extremely little about some of these tribes, some others have opened up a little and given us a glimpse into their lives. Some of their traditions make sense, but some are downright crazy and will make you wonder what these people were thinking!

1. Sentinelese Tribe, Andamans

The Sentinelese tribe is one of the most private tribes existing in the world. They are not just least interested in mingling with "modern" society, but are downright hostile when it comes to interactions with the outside world. We can't really talk much of their tribal traditions as hardly anything is known. But one weird fact is how fond these people are of buckets. Specifically, red buckets. When a group of archaeologists managed to reach relatively close to the island without being shot at with arrows, they received buckets as gifts, in red and green colours along with pigs. The poor pigs were killed and buried. Strangely, the Sentinelese took the red buckets but left the green ones on the shore. Weird!

2. Jarawa Tribe, Andamans

While they do not hate modern population as much as the Sentinelese, they are still rooted in their tribal customs and traditions. Unfortunately, the building of the Great Andaman Trunk Road has resulted in a lot of exploitation of the tribes by tourists and modern local societies. The Jarawas are pretty weird when it comes to food though. They relish fish, pigs and other animals but wouldn't touch a deer, which the area is highly populated with. Perhaps they consider deer sacred. Also, the tribal people of Jarawa change the names of their children post puberty. There is an elaborate ceremony held to celebrate, in which a boy has to hunt a wild pig and offer it to everyone in the village, and a girl is anointed in clay, pig oil and gum, post which the children are given their new names. The tribals are also aware of contraceptive policies and use herbs and plants as contraceptives!

3. Chenchus, Andhra Pradesh

The Chenchus are a tribe residing mainly in Andhra Pradesh and speak a dialect of the Telugu language known as Chenchu. The Chenchus of Andhra Pradesh are quite forward in their thoughts, compared to the rest of Indian society, when it comes to matters of the heart. Chenchu youth are free to marry whoever they wish to. There is no form of parental pressure or aggression. Also, the clan is divided into Gotras (like our caste system), and generally they do not marry within the same Gotra. Unlike our rigid society, Chenchu tribes allow divorce, and widows too are allowed to remarry. Well, maybe our society can take a few 'lessons' from them?

4. Bhils, Rajasthan

The Bhil tribe is one of the biggest tribes of India and comprises almost 39 percent of the whole Rajasthani population. Bhils are pretty independent and follow their own set of rules and customs. There is lot of freedom given to Bhil women and women are treated as equals by the Bhil society. Tribal women smoke hookah and consume liquor openly with men and such activities are not looked down upon. Furthermore, the Bhil community practices polygamy where a woman is allowed to remarry and have multiple partners after her first marriage.

5. Santhals, Eastern India

Santhals mainly occupy parts of Eastern India in West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar and Assam. They do have some contact with the urban world and society and are multilingual as they speak many languages other than Santhali. However, their written script is new and was developed as recently as 1925. While not atheists, Santhals do not believe in idol worship. They have no temples and no idols! They instead, worship local gods and spirits. They are ghost-fearing people and try and appease the "ghosts" of their area. The tribals often make animal sacrifices to appease these ghosts.

6. Mundas, Jharkhand

This tribe from Jharkhand is small in number but has achieved distinguished feats. The members of the tribe are not backward or restricted to their villages and have earned laurels in the fields of sports, politics, literature, revolutionaries, etc. Ram Dayal Munda, a member of the tribe, has been awarded the Padma Shri award too. However, one unique thing about the tribe is how they derived their surnames. The names are derived from the legends of the past. For eg: The surname Dodrai is attributed to the lineage of the man who once ventured into the forest in search of honey. He found honey in the hollow of a tree but in trying to extract it, his hair and body were completely smeared with the liquid. The villagers carried him home and used 7 vessels of oil to clean and soften his hair. Since then, his name became Dodrai and his lineage acquired the surname! Each Munda surname has such tales behind their inception. Crazy, innit?

7. Khasi Tribe, Meghalaya

The Khasi tribe is a pretty peace loving tribe and they are named after the language they speak: Khasi language. While most of the Khasis follow their tribal religion, there are many converts who have taken up other religions like Christianity and Islam. One thing that makes the tribe unique is that they are a matrilineal tribe, which means they carry on the maternal tradition. The children's surnames are based on the mother's lineage and not the fathers. Also, it is the mother who inherits the property and not the father. Also, Khasi tribals do not prefer arranged marriages. In case of a divorce, the woman has complete freedom. Her choice cannot be questioned and she owns the children and properties. The property post death/conflicted property always goes to the youngest daughter. Women, thinking of converting to the Khasi tradition?

Another cool thing about them is their divorce method. While the younger generation does resort to courts, most of the Khasis follow the traditional method. The husband hands the wife 5 paise which the wife returns after adding 5 of her own. The coins are then given to the village elder who throws them away. And done! Divorce complete!

About This Poem

[Fropki] 15 Indian Dishes You Can Make In 15 Minutes

Posted: 07 May 2015 08:36 PM PDT

(Please let the pics open. Might take some time on a slower connection.
If you can't see the pictures, right click the small Red-Cross and choose Show Picture to view it.)

Emily Ratajkowski Rocks the Samsung Studio Launch

If you don't have the patience to stand in the kitchen for long hours, we have just the solution for you. Take a look at 15 dishes you can rustle up in 15 minutes!

1. Achaari Paneer

You'll never go hungry if you've got paneer stocked in your fridge. You can make so many dishes with this particular food item, it's unbelievable! However, achaari paneer is the easiest  to make. Take a bowl and mix fennel seeds, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida. Heat oil in another pan and add the seed mixture. When they crackle, add onions and saute till the onions turn pink. Add the paneer, turmeric, chilli powder, black salt and stir for some time. Later, add coriander and salt and bring to a boil.

2. Anda Curry

Those who stay away from home, swear by eggs. And anda curry is easy and hassle free. Just heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a saucepan and add chopped onions, garlic and ginger paste. Sauté for a few minutes until the onions change colour. Once the onions are fried, add some turmeric powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder and red chilli powder. Stir it well. Now add the tomato puree, salt and boiled eggs. Boil the curry for 10 to 15 minutes until you see the eggs are coated well with the curry.

3. Methi Pakoras

On a rainy day, if you're in the mood for some quick pakoras, here's how you go about it. Mix methi leaves, besan, rice flour, ginger, finely chopped green chilli, onions, curd, cooking soda, red chilli powder and ajwain in a bowl. Add water gradually, and make it a thick batter. Heat oil in a wok and drop the battered pakora one at a time. Deep fry till they turn golden.

4. Aloo Kurkure

Combine potatoes, mint leaves, green chillies, cumin seeds powder, lemon juice and salt in a bowl and mix well. Shape the mixture into round balls and keep them aside. Take some plain flour in a different wok, add little water to make a thick and smooth paste and keep aside. Dip each potato ball in the flour paste and then roll in powdered rice flakes till they are evenly coated from all the sides. Heat oil in another kadhai and deep-fry the potato balls a few at a time till they are golden brown in colour.

5. Phodnicha Bhaat

All you need is some leftover rice, onions and chilli powder. And, you are done! 'Phodni' basically means 'tadka' in Marathi. Add rice to the tadka of cumin seeds, mustard and chilli powder, add some salt and you're done!

6. Idli Upma

Mash leftover idlis by hand till they break down to small pieces. Heat oil in a vessel. Add mustard, urad, chanaa dal, red chillies and curry leaves, and keep it on a low flame. Once the mustard seeds crackle and the urad dal turns a healthy golden color, add onion and turmeric powder for a desired colour. Once the onions turn brown, mix the mashed idlis and add salt.

7. Anardaana Raita

You can make this yummy raita for dessert too. Just whisk the yogurt to make it creamy, add a pinch of salt and some red chilli powder. Add the pomegranate juice and the seeds to yogurt mix. And, you're done!

8. Bhurjee

Be it paneer or with eggs, bhurjee takes hardly 10 minutes to cook. All you need to do is saute cumin, onions, hing, green chillies and curry leaves in oil and add eggs or paneer. After adding salt, you're done!

9. Moong Usal

For people who are on a diet, this is the perfect food to carry for lunch. Sprouts are healthy and are also rich in proteins. For moong usal, heat oil in a pan, add mustard, turmeric powder and curry leaves to it. Add the sprouts, salt, red chilli powder, and water. Mix well, cover and cook on a low flame for five minutes and it's ready.

10. Bhindi Fry

If you have a jiffy to cook a vegetable, pick bhindi and fry it because it won't take much of your time. Wash and dry the bhindi, cut both the ends and cut into two-inch-long pieces. Heat the oil in a kadhai and add the cumin seeds. When they turn brown, add the onions and saute till the mixture turns light golden. Add the green chillies and saute for half a minute. Add the bhindi and sprinkle the red chilli, coriander and turmeric powders. Mix well. Add the salt and amchur (only if you want the sweet and sour taste). When the bhindi is almost cooked, increase the heat and cook for two minutes.

11. Curd Rice

This comfort food is easy to make and completely satiates your hunger. You can either mix curd with rice and have it, or give it a spicy tadka of spices. All within 15 minutes.

12. Egg Maggie

Instead of making the usual Maggi, give it a twist by adding an egg to it. Heat oil in a pan. Add chopped onions, peas, beans, tomatoes or any other vegetables  of your choice. Now add the noodles, water, tastemaker and one egg. Cook till the water evaporates. Simple, isn't it?

13. Shahi Tukda

If you're bored of sandwiches, here's a sweet dish you can make with bread. Make a thick rabadi, by adding sugar, nutmeg powder, elaichi powder, almonds and pistachios and keep it aside. Toast the bread slices and pour the warm rabadi over the slices. Refrigerate the slices for two hours. Add more almonds and pistachios for a great taste.

14. Cheela

For cheela, you need to take besan, wheat flour, onions, garlic pods, salt, coriander, green chillies and red chilly powder in a bowl and add water to make a paste. Heat oil in a pan, and pour the batter on the pan. Fry till they turn brown.

15. Aloo Mattar Sandwich

Why go to a sandwich stall if you can make a healthy, crispy sandwich at home itself? You will have to boil a potato and some peas. Smash the potatoes and mix the peas and make a filling. Toast the bread slices. Put tomato slices on a toasted bread slice. Top it with the potato-peas filling and cover with another slice of toasted bread to make a sandwich. Layer it with cheese or a sauce of your choice.

[Fropki] 16 Foods We Crave For In The Dead Of The Night

Emily Ratajkowski Rocks the Samsung Studio Launch

It's that time of the night again. It's way past your bed time and it's been hours since you had dinner. You're up because you have been watching back-to-back episodes of your favourite TV show, a movie marathon of a popular book series and god knows what else that isn't putting you in the mood for some well-deserved shut eye.

Irrespective of what we do at such ungodly hours, there's one thing we all have in common - cravings for food. Not just any food, but delicious food! We've faced that classic scenario where we walk up to the fridge and stand at the glow of the open door, deciphering what's palatable for a midnight munchathon. It's at times like these that we wish we had a genie who could magically make all those goodies appear.

So what would you ask from your snack resurrecting genie? This is what most of us would like.

1. Pizza

Hot, cheesy, greasy and oozing with the toppings of your choice, whether it's pepperoni, chicken tikka masala or a humble margarita. Pizza is by far the most popular choice for the graveyard shift meal. It's the perfect companion for visual stimulation i.e. movies, cricket/football matches, you name it!

2. Chicken Nuggets

A blend of meatiness and crispiness, this is the best thing to opt for if potato chips, popcorn and buffalo wings are just not doing it for you.

3. Chocolate

A punch of dopamine to lift you through the night, that's all you need. Forget alcohol, chocolate makes you happy. It listens and it doesn't let you go make a fool of yourself.

4. Nachos and cheese

Okay, so you read somewhere that chips make you fat, but nachos are "baked" and are made with corn, so they must be healthier? Right? RIGHT?

They come in those enormous packets and there's nothing better than dipping them in melted cheese, ketchup, salsa or guacamole.

5. Ice-cream

So ice-cream is that thing you eat on a hot summers day, or when someone just broke your heart.

It tastes great at night after dinner, especially when you didn't get satisfactory dessert (or none at all).

6. Chips

Nachos are just too fancy for you and you decide to stick to gold old potato chips. Such a pity that the packets just don't hold enough. Tsk tsk...

7. Milkshakes

Creamy, sweet and it tastes just like liquid ice cream! Who wouldn't want this?

8. Burgers and fries

There's nothing like a hot juicy burger oozing with cheese and barbecue sauce dripping out. No burger is complete without fries. Whether it's salted, shaken up with masala or covered with salsa and cheese.

9. Donuts

Whether it's Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' or M.O.D, and the flavour is chocolatey, fruity or just simply dusted with sugar, nothing beats donuts with a hot cup of milk or coffee.

We realised that the above were too mainstream and typical, so we called some restaurants that deliver food late into the night and these are some of the dishes India loves to eat at the stroke of midnight. We are not surprised that the most popular items are from Mughlai and Indian Chinese cuisine.

10. Kadhai Paneer

11. Chilli Paneer

12. Hakka noodles

13. Mutton Roganjosh

14. Paneer Lababdar

15. Chilli Honey Potato

16. Chicken Tikka

Showers

D. Nurkse

About This Poem

“Hopeless poems about the unimaginable future can seem voyeuristic. Hopeful ones can feel fake. ‘Showers’ is trying to find a balance, but not the middle ground of compromise. The child is real.”
D. Nurkse

Many countries in Africa and Asia are concerned with the cost of livestock — namely cows. Goats are more commonly searched in Kenya, and in North Africa and the Middle East, camels are a hot commodity.

2. Prostitutes

Brazil, Ukraine, Austria, and Thailand lead the world in sex work searches, so you know where the party countries are.

3. Slaves

This WTF search result appears in Mauritania and (thankfully) nowhere else. Slavery is still a common practice in Mauritania, with up to 20% of the population living in slavery. It was technically abolished long ago, but it still persists and is considered a normal part of the culture.

4. Flying a Mig

This weird result appears in just one country: Russia. Apparently flying military planes is something Russian people think about a lot.

5. Real Estate

The only thing people search for in regards to Antarctica is land, because there's a lot of it...not that it's really a good place to build your summer house.

6. Kidneys

People in Iran look up the cost of a kidney more than anyone else. Medical searches are relatively low worldwide, but top searches also include in vitro fertilization (Australia) and vasectomies (New Zealand).

7. Diamonds

Much of Africa is concerned with necessities like food and shelter, but Sierra Leone is interested in the price of diamonds.

8. Mooring yachts

True to type, Monaco also has high-end Google habits. Most people in this extremely wealthy resort country are looking for the price of docking their boats. Other luxury searches include Rolexes in Switzerland, Lamborghinis in Kuwait, and Ferraris in Italy.

9. Nose jobs

Albania and South Korea are both obsessed with rhinoplasty, and the latter is known for its habit of extreme plastic surgery among young women. Mexico also has a cosmetic surgery fixation, but they usually go for tummy tucks.

10. Funerals

Ireland, Haiti, and Guyana are all obsessed with the cost of celebrating the dearly departed.

11. Weddings

On a more cheerful note, weddings make up more searches than funerals worldwide. Residents of Pakistan, Greece, Nigeria, Zambia, and Fiji are all looking to tie the knot.

12. Panama hats

No, it's not Panama searching this, but Ecuador, where they're apparently all the rage.

In case you were wondering, the most-searched item in the U.S. is patent, which seems surprising. Other common searches include food and general living staples, beer, gasoline, and real estate.

[Fropki] This Snake Was Considered Harmless, Until Its First Victim

Scientists classified it as "chill" (not really, but you get the idea).
But in 1957, a herpetologist working for the Chicago Zoo by the name of Karl P. Schmidt got nicked by a single fang and became the creature's first recorded victim.

The fact that he was bitten is impressive considering the snake has to open its mouth 170 degrees to hurt anyone. Schmiddy must have really pissed that one off.
The venom doesn't kick in until several hours after contact. Symptoms start with nausea and headaches. Then the venom attacks red blood cells, inhibiting the blood's ability to clot. Finally, blood pours out of the mouth, nose, anus, and even the eyes.

I believe the scientific term for that is "gross."
Schmidt completely changed the perception of the boomslang, which is now considered one of the most venomous snakes in Africa. Luckily only 10 people have met Schmidt's fate.

The good news is that if you get bitten by the boomslang, you have some time to seek medical attention before you start looking like a heavy metal band's newest album cover. The bad news is that if you don't have the medicine you need, it's a long and painful death.

[Fropki] 10 Of The Most Iconic Moments From The Ramayana

Posted: 06 May 2015 08:41 PM PDT

(Please let the pics open. Might take some time on a slower connection.

Sophie Choudry poses for Mandate Magazine

Ramayana, the story of the King of Ayodhaya, has been an integral part of Indian mythology. And there is just too much to learn from it. In fact, Every time we revisit it, we find something more intriguing. Here are 10 moments from the Ramayana that we'll never be tired of.

1.

On Kaikeyi's demand, King Dashratha was forced to send Lord Rama to exile. She wanted her son Bharat to become the next king of Ayodhya. Rama abandoned his throne to honor his father's word. He agreed to serve exile in the forest for 14 years without complaining or questioning his father's unfair decision.

2.

Bharat was heartbroken to see Lord Rama exiled. He decided to visit Lord Rama in the forest and convinced him to come back and take over as the next king of Ayodhya. But Rama refused to go back. Instead of taking his elder brother back, Bharat took Rama's footwear and placed it on the throne of Ayodhya.

3.

Surpanakha, sister of Ravana, was an important character in the Ramayana. Surpanakha met Lord Rama during his exile in the forest and was completely smitten by his good looks. Rama refused to reciprocate her advances as he wanted to stay faithful to his wife. After being rejected by Lord Rama, she approached Lakshman who had nothing to offer her either. Frustrated Surpanakha then attacked Sita. In order to protect Sita, Lakshman cut off her nose.

4.

Surpanakha, angry and furious, reached Lanka and informed Ravana about her nose being cut. Ravana then decided to take revenge. He changed his appearance and disguised himself as a saint. He then went to Sita asking her for food. She tried her best not to cross the Lakshman Rekha, but ultimately gave up. The moment she crossed the line, Ravana returned to his original appearance and kidnapped her.

5.

When Rama was searching for Sita in the forests, he happened to visit Sabari's house. She was an old hunter woman of the lower caste and a devotee of Lord Rama. She offered him fruits after biting each piece to ensure that they didn't taste sour. This incident from the Ramayana is relevant even today. It suggests that divine love is above all barriers of caste and creed. And that's something we should all take note of.

6.

In the battle against Ravana, Lakshman was severely wounded. To save him, Hanuman was instructed to get Sanjivani - a life saving herb - from Dronagiri Mountains in the Himalayas. On reaching there, Hanuman got confused and failed to recognise the necessary herb. As a result, he lifted the entire mountain and brought it to the battlefield in Lanka. Despite Ravana's several efforts to distract Hanuman, he managed to succeed.

7.

On the final day of the war, Rama found out that Ravana had a vessel of amrita, the nectar of immortality, in his stomach, but he never consumed it. On Agastya's advice, Rama shot an arrow into Ravana's stomach. As a result, the amrita evaporated resulting in Ravana's death.

8.

The end of war with Ravana also marked the end of Lord Rama's exile in the forest. He then returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshman and took over as the king. In Hinduism, Lord Rama is referred to as Maryada Purushottama, the perfect man or lord of virtue. The return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya is celebrated as Diwali, a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil.

9.

Sita was finally rescued by Rama after the war. He made her undergo the test of fire to prove her chastity. Some versions of the Ramayana say that when Sita walked over the flames, they didn't burn her. Instead, they turned into flowers.

10.

Lord Rama performed the Ashwamedha Yagya in which a horse is sacrificed. This particular horse was captured by Luv and Kush who were unaware that it belonged to their father. They engaged in conflict and defeated Rama's brothers. Later, Lord Rama himself turned up for the war. Finally, Hanuman and Valmiki were forced to intervene and informed Lord Rama about the truth about his sons.
