The Infantry and Armoured might make the push into enemy territory and hold ground, but it's the Artillery that clears the way for them. Unfortunately the Indian Army's Artillery has been without new guns for nearly 30 years. Not for long though. The Indian Army will soon be equipped with some of the most powerful artillery guns in the world. Here's what will give India the edge in battle.

1. BAE Systems M777 Ultra Light Howitzer

Ultra Light is not the term you expect to hear when you talk about artillery guns. But in the world of field guns, it is a light weight indeed. It weighs in around 4 tonnes and this has been achieved by extensive use of titanium in its construction. This allows the gun to be transported by helicopters like the Boeing CH-47 Chinook that India will be buying soon. The gun can also be transported on the Indian Air Force's C-130 Hercules airlifter, which proved its abilities by landing on the world's highest airfield in Daulat Beg Oldie in Ladakh. The M777 has an effective firing range of between 24 km to 30 km.

2. DRDO Dhanush

When India bought the Bofors gun back in the 80s, the plan was to also build the gun in India. The company had supplied the blueprints, which were conveniently forgotten. Now after three decades DRDO decided to build the gun here in India and surprisingly exceeded itself. The new gun, called Dhanush, is better than the original in most respects. Upgraded from a 39 calibre to 45 calibre, the gun's range now reaches 38 km instead of 27 km of the original. The gun has cleared the Army's tests with flying colours and an initial order for 114 guns has been placed. A total of 414 guns may be ordered.

3. DRDO Arjun Catapult Mk-2

By mounting a 130 mm artillery gun on the Arjun tank chassis, the Arjun Catapult was DRDO's fresh take on the M46 catapult that was developed in the 80s. The Arjun Catapult uses the same M46 Russian gun of 27 km range. The Army is expected to order around 40 of these heavy duty guns, which the Army will use as a stop-gap till more self-propelled guns aren't procured.

4. Wheeled Self Propelled Gun

The Indian Army is also looking for 155 mm, 52 calibre mounted guns with a requirement of 814 guns. The competition for the tender was announced in 2013 and there is interest from a number of manufacturers. The first 100 of the guns will be bought off-the-shelf and the rest will be made in India. Companies in the fray include Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division which has already unveiled an indigenously developed gun. Ashok Leyland and Larsen & Toubro are tying up with Nexter of France. Then there is Mahindra Land Systems and Bharat Forge.

5. Other procurements

Apart from these, 180 Wheeled Self-Propelled guns will be bought from abroad, after the earlier trials were scrapped. Then there is the procurement of 1,580 towed guns of which 400 will be imported and the rest built in India with tech-transfer. Another set of trials for Tracked Self-Propelled Guns have been completed and a 100 of these are being imported to equip five regiments. In contention for the new tender were Teckwin 'K-9 Thunder' of Samsung, South Korea and Russian Rosoboronexport's 155mm version of MSTA-S.
