[Fropki] 11 Dreamy Hidden Villages You Should Add To Your Wanderlust Bucket List

Amy Jackson's Pallu Drop Exposes Too Much

In a land far, far away, in parts of the world considered uninhabitable for most, lie the prettiest of settlements known to man. From a volcanic crater in Japan to a hill-top monastery in India, from the oasis town of Peru to the molehill of Australia, natives in these parts of the world have survived by adapting themselves to their natural surroundings, completely hidden from the rest of the world.

Welcome to paradise.

1. Aogashima, Japan

Located in the Philippine sea and administered by Tokyo, Aogashima is perhaps the only inhabited volcanic island there is. Living on this 8.75 sq. km island is nothing short of magic. Even though the last proper volcano that erupted here was in the 1780s, living on this island means a constant threat to life. Currently, it's home to 170-200 people.

2. Monemvasia, Greece

On a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese lies Monemvasia. Only 947 sq. km, this little settlement is hidden away behind a massive rock face in Laconia in Greece. Apparently, the island was separated from the mainland in 375 AD because of an earthquake. But to make commuting easy, locals made a small walkway for easy access to the mainland.

3. Phugtal Monastery, India

Oh, the beauty of India! The Phugtal Monastery or Phugtal Gompa is one of the most secluded monasteries in the world. Founded in the 12th century and made from mud and timber, it is located at the entrance to a cave on a cliff face in the south-eastern Zanskar region in Ladakh. It is also known to be one of the only Buddhist monasteries that can still be reached by foot. A stone tablet at the monastery is a reminder of the stay of Alexander Csoma de Kőrös at Phuktal between 1826-1827.

4. Isortoq, Greenland

What I'd give to be here! Cut off from the rest of the world, in peace and tranquility, located literally in the middle of nowhere, this little village town has a population of only 64 people! Back in the day, the Inuit inhabitants would have to rely on only meat for food since the harsh conditions wouldn't allow for any green to grow. Times have changed now with a supermarket in the locality offering a variety of things. They even have a heliport now!

5. Gásadalur Village, Denmark

Located on the west side of  Faroe Islands, the village of Gásadalur looks exactly like a scene from Game of Thrones. Only 16, very lucky, residents get to enjoy this stunning beauty of mother Earth.

6. Huacachina, Peru

Huacachina is a small oasis town in the barren desert of southwestern Peru. The palm trees and a serene lagoon has put this place on every travel lover's bucket list. The 96 residents running small businesses would welcome you with open arms in this surreal part of the planet.

7. Undredal, Norway

If I were to pick a place that looks more like a set of a Disney movie and less like an actual township, it'd be Underdal in Norway. Famous for its brown goat cheese and goat sausages, this little town hosts more goats than humans. That's right, there are 100 people and 500 goats in Undredal. Although a road connection has been made now, Undredal, right until 1988, was only accessible by boat.

8. Furore, Italy

Furore just looks like a picture from an artist's imagination. Located on the breathtaking coast of Amalfi, Furore is an Italian village with colourful houses decorated with murals. An interesting story behind the  colours - for the longest time, Furore was hidden from the eye of the traveller. Nobody knew about the beauty that existed. It started being dubbed as the 'village that doesn't exist'. Following these claims, the mayor of the town ordered the houses to be painted in bright, vibrant colours so that the beauty of the village could be spotted from the coastal road.

9. Coober Pedy, Australia

For those wondering where the village is, it is under the massive mole hills you see in the picture. The Aussies really know how to deal with things down under. They built an entire town concealed underground with a population of 1700-odd people. This was done to deal with the unbearable heat in Australia.

Coober Pedy is also known as the 'opal capital of the world' because of the precious opals that are mined there. The name Coober Pedy comes from the Aboriginal term - kupa-piti which funnily translates to 'white man's hole' in English.

10. Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena

Tristan da Cunha is definitely the most remote village on this list, and also perhaps the most remote settlement known to mankind till date. The only way to reach this gorgeous place is by a six-day boat journey from South Africa, or as a part of an unforgettable month-long cruise through the South Atlantic Ocean. This group of islands is 2000 kms away from Saint Helena, 2,400 kms from South Africa and 3,360 kms from South America. Basically, right in the middle of the ocean.

300 people reside at the foot of Queen Mary's Peak, who farm for a living, and are totally cut-off from the world's bullshit. Lucky.

11. Anonymous village on the bank of Niger river, Mali

We won't be shy to admit that we know nothing about this place. We don't know what it's like, we don't know how many people live here, heck, we don't even know its name. All we know is that it exists, it is on the bank of the Niger river in Mali and that it puts you in a dilemma - should we call it Earth porn or poverty?

[Fropki] 7 Real Countries That Are Not Recognised By The Rest Of The World

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:14 AM PST

Sophie Chaudhary's Busty Assets Falling Out of Blouse

We love living in denial, don't we? We find comfort in sticking to the basics, going by the things we know and turning a blind eye to the things we don't. Take a country, for instance. We know what it is, but in reality, the concept of a country is a little more complex than just that. The globe, or the atlas for that matter, is full of little regions that should ideally be recognised as a country, yet for various reasons they are not recognised by the United Nations and are ignored on most world maps.

It is really like entering a parallel universe, actually. These nations have a history not known to many, a rich culture, a clear set of beliefs apart from having a fixed population, a flag, their own set of rules and regulations, and a currency. Some of them can even issue a legit passport. Yet, they aren't recognised as a separate nation by the United Nations, often considered the final seal of recognition.

Here are some nations that should be recognised as a country, but aren't.

1. Empire of Atlantium

The empire of Atlantium recognises itself as a 'unique parallel sovereign state' based in New South Wales, Australia. They believe that in a world where people are more unified based on their common interests and purpose in life, they provide an alternative to the "discriminatory" practice of assigning nationality to an individual on the basis of their birth or other circumstances. They follow the decimal calendar and are quite a liberal bunch, actually. They support the unrestricted right to freedom of movement across the borders, the right to an abortion, and the right to assisted suicide, among other things.

First established by three teenagers on the 27th of November 1981, the country does not have any diplomatic relations with any country. However, it does have "unaccredited diplomatic representatives" called "Imperial Legates" in a number of countries including the USA, Brazil, Singapore, Switzerland, Pakistan and India.

The Empire of Atlantium has approximately 3000 "citizens" from over 100 countries, most of whom have signed up online. In fact, a large percentage of the 3000 have never actually been to Atlantium.

2. Christiania

Also known as Freetown Christiania, this country hosts about 850 residents across 34 hectares of land in a small part of Denmark's capital, Copenhagen. Christiania was temporarily closed by its residents back in April 2011, while they were having a dialogue with the Danish government regarding their future, but is open to everyone now. There have been differences leading to conflicts between its people and the Danish government since its creation back in 1971, but off late, things have become more relaxed. The Danish government has also been more tolerant with Christiana's cannabis trade which has led to riots, damage to property and even murder in the past. If you ever end up travelling here, make sure you're not seen clicking pictures. Determined to keep their city away from Danish intervention, they will make sure you don't see your camera again.

Other than that, the country is pretty liberal. One of the famous places to visit there is the Gay House - a centre for gay activism, parties and theatre. Such is the fame of the gay house that homosexuals from all across Denmark come to Christiania to attend the high-acclaimed shows.

3. Crimea

Covering a comparatively large area of 27,000 square km, Crimea is located on the northern coast of the Black Sea. The only land border it shares is with Ukraine from the North. Crimea has always been a land we hear about in fables. In the past, they have been colonised by the ancient Greeks, the ancient Persians, the Romans, the Byzantine empire, the Goths, the Genoese, even the Ottoman empire. In the recent past, Crimea was annexed by the Russians in 1783 and became a republic as a part of USSR. It was downgraded to Crimean Oblast during the second World War. It got transferred to Ukranian Soviet Socialist Republic and became a part of Ukraine in 1991. If you think you're having it difficult in life, know this, Crimea got annexed by the Russians again in 2014.

In spite of all the political unrest, Crimea has been a hotspot for tourists since the 90s with Nat Geo naming it in the top 20 destinations to travel to in the world in 2014.

4. The Republic of Lakotah

The Republic of Lakotah is a sizeable area of land within the United States and boasts of a population of more than 100,000 people. Located bang in the middle of America, Lakotah's story of struggle began in the 18th century when they signed a deal with the American government that promised them the right to live in the Black Hills.  The Black Hills, however, turned out to be sacred to many others, thanks to the land's ability to produce gold.

For more than a century, the American government forgot about the plight of the locals before issuing an apology in 1998. The court decided to compensate the Lakotah Sioux for nearly $600 million, but they refused their money. They believed if they had taken the money, it would've come across as if the atrocities committed on them were alright. In 2007, they declared a formal withdrawal from the US. The Republic of Lakotah continues to fight for their independence.

5. Barotseland

With a population of around 3.5 million and located in a region between Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Angola and Zambia, Barotseland is humungous if we were to compare it with the other countries on this list. Forming a unified group of over 20 individual tribes from around the region, the Barotse speak Silozi, a complex language derived from several tribal languages.

It is said that the Barotse nation was founded by Queen Mbuywamwambwa, the Lozi matriarch, over 500 years ago, with people migrating from all over Africa, mainly Congo. Around 1889, King Lewanika signed a treaty to provide the kingdom recognition as a state. This was also around the time when the King had just begun trading the diamonds found in the state with Europe. He signed a trade concession and in return, his kingdom was to be protected. Later, seeking better military protection, King Lewanika signed another treaty with the British South African Company in 1890. This put Barotseland as another unit of Northern Rhodesia. Lewanika protested to the Queen but that didn't make any difference. In 1900, United Kingdom proclaimed and governed the land as part of Barotziland-North-Western Rhodesia.

6. Murrawarri Republic

The Murrawarri Republic is a micronation that declared its independence from Australia very recently in 2013. They are located in a small area on the borders of New South Wales and Queensland. Interestingly, the Murrawarri Republic released an independence declaration to the Queen of England and the Prime Minister of Australia. In the letter sent, they asked Queen Elizabeth II to prove her legitimacy over their land. They gave 30 days to Australia and the Queen to respond. Not getting a response, they formally became a nation. Their declaration of independence, however, is still unrecognised by the Australian government.

7. Principality of Hutt River

Australia has a number of rebels, it seems. Previously known as the Hutt River Province, it is known to be the oldest micronation of Australia. Hutt River is a principality set up by farmers to escape the stringent grain quotas set up by the Australian government. After decades of struggle, the people of the province no longer have to pay Australian taxes. They even have their own currency now. So cute.

Then there are many more that haven't been featured here but are equally important on the world map. They deserve our recognition.

Evolution

Linda Bierds

About This Poem

“Three years ago, while living in London, I saw an exhibition at the Science Museum on Alan Turing’s life—his work as a decoder in World War II, his persecution as a homosexual, his death by cyanide at forty-four. Although the focus of Turing’s work was not evolution, he did ask how the symmetrical cell could become the asymmetrical being. When I found myself asking similar questions about Turing’s personal evolution, my poem took shape.”
—Linda Bierds

Linda Bierds’s most recent book is Roget’s Illusion (Marian Wood Books, 2014).  She teaches at the University of Washington in Seattle and lives on Bainbridge Island in Washington.

[Fropki] This Is How Our Brain Forgets And Remembers Things

Posted: 10 Feb 2016 10:05 AM PST

(Please let the pics open. Might take some time on a slower connection.
If you can't see the pictures, right click the small Red-Cross and choose Show Picture to view it.)

Alessandra Ambrosio bared her toned tummy and long legs

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that the human mind is the most complex thing on the planet. If working at full potential, it can be more powerful than the smartest computer we have ever built. If working at full potential, it can lead us to answer questions that have haunted mankind for centuries. It can open a new world for us. But we don't use it at full potential do we?

One of the very intriguing functions of our brain is the power to store memories. But how does it all work? How does it automatically store a memory and help us retrieve it when we need it? Why do we fail to recall things sometimes? Let's find out.

Step One: Memory encoding

This is the first step when we begin to create a new memory. It allows our brain to convert our interest into an idea that is tucked away in our brain and then recalled later as a short-term, or a long-term memory.

Step two: Memory consolidation and storage

This is the part where the memory we just stored is stabilised in our head. Learning something new needs consolidation just so that we don't end up forgetting it. Take studies, for example. Perhaps the main reason I was so bad in academics (apart from the fact that I wasn't interested much) was because I would spend long hours mugging things up. Which, as it turns out, is the reason I would forget some important bits of my course. One should always have two study sessions with time to relax in between sessions. Known as spaced learning, it'll help you learn more in half the time. When we put long hours studying, our mind zones out every now and then, therefore losing the ability to learn new things. Now I know why I would blank out about the things I had learnt the night before school exams. Another great tip? Read out loud (or even whisper) the things you're reading, it helps to memorise things better.

Step three: Memory retrieval

Simply, memory retrieval means accessing the information that's been stored in our head. Since we were talking about exams, it's the point when we start reminding ourselves of the answers we need to write on the paper.

There are four ways to retrieve information from our brain:

Recall

In this type of memory retrieval, we do not need to be told or clued in on the context of the information. Like, fill in the blanks. The answer just comes to us as soon as we read the sentence.

Recollection

This method is more complex than recall. Here we need to reconstruct a certain part of the memory or use narratives and clues. Let's say we need to write about the life of a Mughal emperor. We might not remember everything about his life, but the part we do know helps us reconstruct the remaining information based on the partial memories.

Recognition

In this type of memory retrieval, we need to go through the information all over again to remember what we forgot. Remembering the answer while filling out multiple choice questions can be an example of recognition.

Relearning

This one involves relearning what we learnt before all over again. This often makes it easier for us to remember complex things and improves our memory. The five minutes we use to mug up last minute things before the exam could be an example.

The Problem

Then there are issues too. You see, the aforementioned techniques do not always work. Like the time when you completely black out while writing a paper. Or the time when you know something well but you fail to recollect? It's right there, on the tip of the tongue but you don't know the word.

While I agree that these instances are annoying especially when you need the information urgently, research has shown that these instances are quite common in our lives. In fact, younger individuals face a scenario like this at least once every week, while it's more common among adults who typically forget a thing or two at least three to four times a week.

The memories are there, kept safely, but we just fail to access them. Many times, this is because we lack the retrieval cues required to trigger the memory. The other reason could be that the information we learnt never really got stored in our memory, we didn't focus enough while trying to memorise something.

Downstairs in Dreams

About This Poem

“My father was a Latin teacher, so at bedtime we got the classic myths and stories from The Odyssey, including a variety of creatures half-human, half-animal. Centaurs in particular fascinated me because they were both horses (longed for) and mature male sexual beings (feared). The poem cages childhood trauma in myth and dream, which acknowledges and preserves the fact of it but keeps it safely remote and unreal.”
—Chase Twichell

Chase Twichell is the author of Horses Where the Answers Should Have Been: New & Selected Poems (Copper Canyon Press, 2010). She splits her time between the Adirondacks of northern New York and Miami Beach.
