They give us the freedom to experience things without stressing too much about the money aspect of it. Credit cards really help us out, whether it's buying the awesome television we always dreamed of or taking that vacation we longed for.  But the convenience it offers also aids in clouding our judgement. Acting as a safety net for our desires in life, credit cards are also big time trouble makers. It is like a honey-trap that often lands us in situations we try our best to avoid.  Here are some really helpful credit card hacks that'll help you walk the fine line without unknowingly tipping over to the dark side of greedy banks.  1. Late bill payments It is, of course, better than not paying your bill at all, but not a lot. Two things happen when you pay your bills late. You are levied a penalty worth a substantial amount, most often costing more than your minimum payment amount. Secondly, not paying up on time affects your credit score, which might not be a problem now, but will be a big problem when you apply for loans of a large sum, like a house loan or car loan.  2. Making minimum payments Banks do give you the option of paying a nominal sum as a 'minimum payment' on your purchase every month but it's not something you should fall for. The interest that banks charge on your outstanding amount is quite high, and if you keep paying just the minimum amount, you would end up shelling out a lot more as interest. Many times even more than the actual value of the product. So best practice would be to save by cutting costs on other things and pay as much of the bill as you can. Remember, more the amount, more the interest.  3. Some of us get way too many cards Credit cards are a boon when in need. But the greedy bunch that we are, we always 'need' more. Which is great for the banks, but definitely not for us. It is simple logic, more credit cards means more spending, more spending means deeper debt. Additionally, it also affects your credit score and the annual fees also adds to your expenditure. Having one card is ideal because it's much easier to track with all your expenses in one place. Credit is not an added income so getting another card when you max out your limit on one is not the solution. It'll only make things worse.  4. Using a credit card for everyday items Until and unless you're caught in a massive shitstorm in life, you should be able to pay for your basic necessities with your monthly salary. Using your cards for purposes like buying groceries and paying off utility bills is often the first step of losing control of your spending. You don't wish to make the Rs 100 you spent buying vegetables cost you Rs 1000 with interest, do you? Not using your card will also help in keeping your expenses under control. Keep your cards for a purchase that you perhaps don't wish to make with the money you have. Like buying electronics or getting flight and hotel tickets.  5. Ignore the T&Cs Scratch that. In fact, never ignore the T&Cs of card companies. Actually, never ignore the T&Cs of anything that involves money because more often than not, the devil is in the detail. Most often, we only end up signing for additionals we didn't know and definitely didn't need. So make sure you read all the documents thoroughly, even twice for that matter, just so it doesn't backfire at a later stage.  6. Exceed your credit limit It's self-explanatory really. Like mentioned before, a big amount means a bigger interest rate. So never bite off more than you can chew.  7. Ignoring monthly statements  Never, ever ignore your monthly statements. Not knowing how much you owe to the bank can very quickly land you in a lot of trouble. Be aware of your monthly statements to know where and what you're spending on, if you're being charged for something you didn't purchase, and to keep a check on your budget. It is always important to know where you stand and the monthly statements will help you get a grip on things.  8. Using card to withdraw cash This is the worst of the lot. A number of people still use their credit cards as debit cards to withdraw cash from the ATM. Any cash withdrawn from the ATM is considered 'cash advance' by the banks. It's considered more like a short term loan. A loan doesn't come without interest and cash withdrawals attract a mammoth interest rate. So don't even think of touching your credit card at an ATM unless it's a matter of life and death. Stick to your debit cards otherwise.  9. Thinking foreign transactions are the same as domestic ones Each bank has different exchange and transaction rate. So before you make a transaction while traveling abroad, make sure you check and use the card that gives you the best rates. It was very cold. I had to stop up the hole in my shoe. I used the lid of a tin can.   As far as I can tell, there's nothing trustworthy about my experience of reality. I stand on one leg. I stand on the other leg. I rotate my arms clockwise   and call this exercise. In the home movie I recognize my coat. Taking my turn with the mechanical bull at Uncle Ron’s Wild West Saloon I hold on for as long as a minute.   So little happens on a given day, which is why I play the accordion until I am riddled with someone’s applause, which is why I drive to Arthur County to see   the hay bale church and the world’s smallest courthouse. If I was a blue jay or some kind of robin I would fly figure-eights over the cottonwoods. Despite the wind, I would not curse the wind.   The future is a rumor like the past. The new anxiety supplants the old anxiety. The continent I stand my ground on drifts, which is why I have asked you to marry me.   I am solid gold, I say, and I am capable of loving you until the final asteroid hides Omaha under an ocean of ash, but you’re unavailable.   They were on their way to the ocean when they made their minds up to stay here. The grass was so tall they picked wildflowers without stepping down from their horses.   We are all so lucky. It is terrifying. It is a blue sky day for all the freezingness. It's common to lose about 50-100 strands a day, and up to 250 strands when you wash your hair. About 10% of your hair is dormant, and will fall out after 2-3 months. Sometimes you may not realize that everyday habits can contribute to hair loss. Here are some natural ways to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss, as well as some tips on what not to do to ensure that your hair stays on your head.   Home Remedies:   1.  Coconut milk   Coconut milk contains a rich source of nutrients including vitamin E, potassium, and iron. Applying this liquid directly to the roots can help prevent hair breakage and accelerate hair growth. The antibacterial properties in the milk can also protect the scalp as it is a natural conditioner for both hair and skin. It's recommended that you leave the treatment in overnight.   2. Amla, Indian gooseberry   This fruit is well known for its high levels of vitamins. It is also packed with antioxidants, which can prevent premature graying of the hair. The essential fatty acids in this fruit can also keep hair follicles strong. Apply a paste of dried amla with lime juice to the scalp to nourish your locks and make your hair extra lustrous. To make the paste mix 2 teaspoons of lime juice with 2 teaspoons of dried amla powder.   3. Scalp massage   Regularly treating your head to a massage is effective in keeping your hair healthy. A massage stimulates blood flow to the scalp and promotes hair growth. Combining a head massage with lukewarm oil can prevent hair loss and dandruff too.   There are a number of oils to try: coconut, jojoba, mustard, almond, lavender, olive, or sesame oil - all full of added nutrients. Jojoba oil is especially recommended because it replaces sebum (an oily secretion from the sevaceous glands) in the scalp.   4. Neem, Indian lilac   Neem oil is extracted from the fruit of the Indian lilac tree. This treatment is effective because the tree is rich in antioxidants which counter free radicals. Neem is regenerative and contains fatty acids like linoleic, oleic, and stearic acids, which also condition the scalp and hair.   Neem is an astringent and can also treat itching, dandruff and head lice without chemicals. Neem oil has a bitter smell so it's recommended that you mix it with an aromatic essential oil like lavender, tea tree or orange. You can massage this mixture into your scalp and apply it to your locks too.   5. Aloe vera   Aloe Vera is another good remedy for hair loss. Applying pure aloe gel directly to the scalp helps balance the pH level. The plant extract is rich in vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and enzymes. The aloe strengthens hair elasticity and can soften and moisturize your hair, acting as a natural conditioner. Dissolving a small amount of salt into the gel can also help. The salt penetrates through deeper skin layers and can prevent hair from falling out unnecessarily.    6. Egg white and curd   The combination of egg white and curd creates a super hair treatment that promotes hair growth. Eggs are rich in sulfur, selenium, iodine, phosphorus, iron and zinc. Curd has many nutrients and is anti-fungal. This mixture makes an excellent conditioner, making your hair look shiny and at the same time, it effectively fights dandruff and hair loss. Combine the ingredients and apply the mask to your scalp and hair.   7. Henna   While most people know henna as a natural hair dye, it is also an excellent way to strengthen and condition your hair. More importantly henna controls excessive hair loss. When applied to the hair and scalp it creates a protective coat over the hair shafts and its nutrients repair the hair cuticles, making the strands thick and strong.   To prevent hair loss, combine dried henna leaves or powdered henna with mustard oil and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Massage this oil mix into your scalp. Leave it to rest for 30 minutes and rinse your hair after.     8. Hibiscus   This vibrant flower has many rejuvenating properties for hair. It is an old Indian method of maintaining a thick mane of hair. Because of its rich vitamin C and amino acid content, this flower works to prevent premature graying. It also nourishes the hair and treats dandruff. When you combine the crushed leaves of the flowers with coconut or sesame oil and apply this paste to your scalp regularly, it can help with hair loss. It's best to leave the paste in your hair for several hours and then rinse.   Habits to avoid:   Don't comb or rub your hair while wet   Wet hair is more fragile because the protective layer has been stripped. Towel drying or combing your hair when wet can cause the hair to snap and break. Untangle your hair before you wet it and blot your hair with a towel.   Don't overheat your hair   Excess use of your hair dryer or straightening iron can dry out your hair shafts, leading to dull, and brittle hair. The heat can damage the proteins and the dryness also strips your hair of natural moisture, resulting in dry cuticles, which will snap off. It's recommended you limit this activity to 2 to 3 times a week.   Don't wash your hair with hot water   Boiling hot water can weaken your hair follicles and cause hair to fall out. Having a steaming hot shower frequently can strip away the protective oils and this can cause your scalp pores to overproduce oil, which can damage the hair at the root, resulting in excessive shedding. Opt for washing your hair with lukewarm to warm water, and rinsing with cooler temperatures, to lock in moisture. Not hers ever again. Ever hers, my body pulled through, two long windows open in the dark of birth, the gold cord raised too in its wake. Awake, the first morning. The first morning & all, all the windows were closed inside. A blindness scalding broken sight. The silence pulled through my nostrils & veins, the ether of air failing flesh. I get up from the shape I once was & open the white blinds in my brother’s house. The light is specific. It is the 29th morning of July. Last night they dragged me howling from her body in the room. The room had a name, number 3315, in the cardiac wing. In the room I saw her winged shape leave, rise, forgive the vessel that fled her. Now mine or ours, I stare in the mirror while everyone sleeps the aggrieved sleep of the living. Behind my eyes a dead woman looks back at me with no trace of recognition.
