Scientists, including an Indian-origin professor, have developed a new software which helps robots efficiently cope with challenges like grabbing a milk jug from the back of the refrigerator while boosting their creativity in solving problems. Developed by the team at Carnegie Mellon University, the rearrangement planner software was developed in the robotics lab of Siddhartha Srinivasa. "It was exploiting sort of superhuman capabilities," Srinivasa said of his lab's two-armed mobile robot called "Home Exploring Robot Butler" or HERB. What can HERB do?"The robot's wrist has a 270-degree range, which led to behaviours we didn't expect. Sometimes, we're blinded by our own anthropomorphism," he added. In one case, the robot used the crook of its arm to cradle an object to be moved. "We never taught it that," Srinivasa said. In addition to HERB, the software was tested on NASA's KRex robot which is being designed to traverse the lunar surface. While HERB focused on clutter typical of a home, KRex used the software to find traversable paths across an obstacle-filled landscape while pushing an object. The rearrangement planner automatically finds a balance between the two strategies, Srinivasa said, based on the robot's progress on its task. The robot is programmed to understand the basic physics of its world so it has some idea of what can be pushed, lifted or stepped on. It can be taught to pay attention to items that might be valuable or delicate. All's good, but...One limitation of this system is that once the robot has evaluated a situation and developed a plan to move an object, it effectively closes its eyes to execute the plan. If you have been a regular reader of this website and take a keen interest in knowing about everything about technology, you would have read our article on some really absurd gadgets that have launched at CES this year. One particular absurdity in that lot is the EHang drone - "the delivery drone for humans." Yes, a drone big enough to carry humans. Now, to take the hype quotient up by a level, EHang has tied up with Lung Biotechnology PBC to develop and produce 1,000 such drones for them. Lung Biotechnology PBC is a company that plans to manufacture lungs along with other artificial organs. They want the drones to be stationed outside factories/plants and use EHang to transport the organs. Calling it the Manufactured Organ Transport Helicopter or MOTH, they want these drones to be their official mode of transport for delivery of these artificial organs to patients in need in hospitals. India is already on itWhile Lung Biotechnology PBC plans to make this into a reality in the near future, back home in India, scientists have already started work on drones that will transport organs to patients in urgent need of a transplant. Every second is crucial for patients suffering from organ failure, which is why Bengaluru will be the first city in the country to ferry organs with the help of a drone. Thus, substantially cutting down on the buffer time and saving more lives. Natural vs ArtificialWhile Lung Biotechnology PBC in collaboration with EHang explores the possibilities of artificial organs and the feasibility of transferring them in a drone big enough to fit humans, scientists in Bengaluru are thinking about the immediate future, with real organs, and smaller drones. Which makes the job a bit tricky since these organs come with a shelf life. Kidneys last the longest, 24 hours. A healthy liver, for 12-15 hours. The heart, unfortunately, doesn't stay for more than 10 hours, which makes the drones the fastest option available. Will it be the safest? We can only presume. Artificial organs, on the other hand, they don't exist yet. The company is totally legit. It has existed for a while and makes about $700 million in sales every year. They have invested heavily in the transplantation-ready pig organs and brought Craig Venter, one of the first scientists to master the human genome, on board to make this project into a reality. There is a considerable amount of research left to be done for artificial human organs. Post which, their "product" would need to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and FDA approvals are a process that sometimes take years, so drone transportation should be the least of their worries currently. Drones, too, are a risk. As proof that the EHang can carry humans around, there's only one short video. The fact that this product needs to be tested time and again before being mass produced for the world, tells us this is still a dream in the pipeline. While Lung Biotechnology thinks it's doable, various countries around the world have different policies on drones. Most, are against it. Federal Aviation Administration or the FAA still needs to certify these drones, which again, takes time. The FAA is even considering the possibility of banning heavy drones from flying over people, and if that's the case, this whole artificial organ delivery business can be flushed down the toilet. The Indian Law on drones doesn't make things easyAccording to the international UAV laws, one is allowed to own and fly drones as long as they fly over private property. To fly it over a public place, you need to get written permissions from local authorities before you fly it. General guidelines ask drone owners to keep them away from crowded areas, military bases and airports etc. Not adhering to the laws can result in your drone being shot down, or worse, you being arrested. But to be honest, India still remains pretty clueless about these flying machines and needs laws on it soon. But getting a Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Government of India (DGCA) clearance on the drones should be easy to get, especially when the purpose is to save lives. Drones can fly comfortably at a height of 500 ft, so it could be used to fly in the traditional no-fly zones but the real challenge remains the distance range. More than saving crucial time in the emergency cases, transportation of organs in this way could also help putting a brake on the organ donation issues India faces and the much bigger menace, the illegal organ trade. If not stop it completely, it'll definitely help in monitoring and keep a control over things. The bloodshed the world over has led to the inception of new kingdoms, new religions and individual greats, who not only brought changes in regime, but also paved the way for much-needed change in the socio-political orders of countries. And India's history is certainly no exception. Wars have always been associated with the destruction of one and the rise of another; and in India, some wars were so crucial that they scripted the fate of the country's history. If Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, Samundragupta, Harshvardhana, Prithviraj Chauhan and Akbar were among the rulers who saved India from outside invasions; there were many who weren't up to the task. Porus, despite fighting valiantly and almost defeating Alexander The Great when the latter invaded India in 326 BC, couldn't defend the border from foreign invaders. Post 1000 AD, India's vulnerability to tough opponents became evident, which is why most of the wars that followed always brought about changes in regime. Whether it was Chandragupta's advance against Greek Commander Seleucus Nictor in 305 BC, or Samundra Gupta's conquest of the south up to Sri Lanka, which got him known as 'Napoleon of India', these are rare examples when Indian kings successfully tried to conquer foreign lands. But let's move forward to modern history. There were 5 major wars that brought in and established Islam, the Mughals, and the British in India, essentially scripting the history that we get to read today. 1. Second Battle of TarainThis war took place in Tarain in 1192 between Delhi's King Prithviraj Chauhan and Muhammed Ghori, the Sultan of Ghor. Ghori had been invading and looting India for three decades when he challenged Prithviraj in the First Battle of Tarain in 1191. The great Rajput king defeated him. According to text books, humiliated after his defeat, Ghori returned to Afghanistan, but came back in 1192 with a bigger army and challenged Chauhan once again. This time, due to the lack of unity between the Rajput confederation, Chauhan was short on support from other Rajput kings, resulting in a massive defeat for Chauhan, the last Hindu king on the throne of Delhi. The war established Islam in India, because unlike other Islamic invaders who used to loot India and return to their lands, Ghori stayed put. He established an empire and before returning to Ghor, left Qutub-ul-Din Aibak, the man who laid the foundation of Qutub Minar in Delhi, as his regional governor. Later this event led to the foundation and rise of the Delhi Sultanate. 2. First Battle of PanipatThis war took place between the invader Babur from Fargana, and Delhi's Sultan Ibrahim Lodhi in 1526. Many books, including Babur's biography, claim Babur was invited to attack India by Lodhi's brother, Sikander Lodhi, and Mewar's King Rana Sanga, who thought that war with Babur would weaken the Sultan enough to defeat him. But like Ghori, Babur was mesmerized with the riches of the beautiful India, and didn't leave after defeating the Sultan. Instead, he laid the foundation of the Mughal Empire. Babur, later in 1527, defeated Rana Sanga in the Battle of Khanwa. But the Mughal rule was cemented in the Second Battle of Panipat in 1556, when his grandson Akbar defeated Hemu, the last hope of Hindu rule over Delhi. 3. Battle of PlasseyThis battle established the British as one of the contenders, along with the Marathas, the Jats and many others as successors to the Mughal empire. The war took place on 23 June 1757, between the Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah and the British. Tensions escalated between the two when the British fortified Fort William in Calcutta without the permission of the Nawab. According to NCERT books, the Nawab was fed up with the continuous interference of the British in his rule, and took this opportunity to vent his anger. He destroyed the fortification. But soon the British got help of Madras Province. Robert Clive, the British Commander, was scared of being outnumbered by the Nawab's army. Therefore, he bribed Mir Jaffer, one of the commanders of the Nawab's army, along with many other key commanders. As a result, a majority of the 40,000 soldier army of the Nawab didn't fight, and surrendered meekly at Plassey. The Nawab lost to an army of just three thousand soldiers. This war made Britain's dream of ruling India more accessible, and they realised it by defeating all other contenders to the Mughal throne - the Marathas, the Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan, and many others in future. 4. Third Battle of PanipatThis war, between the Marathas and Afghan invader Agmad Shah Abdali, took place on 14th January 1761. The war is considered to be one of the most decisive battles in Indian history because it didn't decide who would become the successor of the Mughals in India, but who would not. The Marathas, under the leadership of the Peshwa's brother Sadashiva Rao Bhau, lost their war despite having twice the number of soldiers against Abdali. According to A Comprehensive History of Medieval India, the major cause of Maratha defeat was the lack of support from other Indian regional kings like the Rajputs, Sikhs, Jats and even the Nawab of Awadh. Panipat was thousands of miles away from their capital in Pune, and it resulted in soldiers dying of hunger. Maratha supply lines were cut by Abdali and his Indian allies. Out of compulsion, Bhau had to fight at Panipat. Initially, the ferocity of the Maratha attack was such that it took the Afghans by surprise, but soon the law of averages caught up and the Afghans dominated and defeated the Marathas. This defeat opened the gates of India to the British. A few years later, the British waged war against the Maratha empire and completely destroyed it by 1818 in the third Anglo-Maratha war. 5. Battle of BuxarThe battle took place on 22 October, 1764 at Buxar, roughly 130 km west to of Patna, between the British, led by Hector Munro, and the combined forces of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, and Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal. The Indian side had a massive army of almost 40,000 troops, whereas the British had only 10,000 soldiers in their ranks. But the Indian side lost. Some believe this was due to the increasing rift between Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II and the Nawab of Awadh. As a result of the defeat, the treaty of Allahabad was signed, and the Mughal Emperor became the prime victim. Apart from being the pensioner of the British, he remained confined in Allahabad, had to give Diwani Rights of revenue collection of the Bengal Province, comprising today's Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and parts of Uttar Pradesh, to the British. After Buxar, the British never looked back. The victory gave the British great confidence and they became a force to reckon with. Till the 1857 revolt, they defeated all their potential enemies including the Marathas, Tipu Sultan and the Sikhs, resulting in the complete subjugation of the Indian subcontinent under the British rule.
