Think the Arabs live a lavish life? Think again. Our Maharajas weren't too far behind.  

1. The Nawab of Junagadh - Mahabet Khan Rasul Khan

The Nawab of Junagadh loved his dogs. So much so that he had 800 of them and each with its own room, telephone and a servant. Why? Just. But that's still not the craziest thing Mahabet Khan Rasul Khan did. The Nawab's favourite pet dog was Roshanara who had 'fallen in love' with a golden retriever named Bobby. The Nawab was so happy to learn this that he decided to throw a lavish wedding ceremony for the two dogs. All this while people in his town rotted away in poverty.

The wedding, as expected, was larger than life. He even invited Lord Irwin (the viceroy of India back then) for the event, which was politely declined. The bride was dressed up beautifully with shampoo and perfume. She was even made to wear expensive jewellery and brought in a silver palki to the Durbar Hall where the wedding was supposed to happen. The groom wore gold bracelets and a necklace and was received at the railway station by 250 dogs in a brocade, a military band and a guard of honour. Rs 22000 was spent on the wedding - a figure that comes to a very generous Rs 2.25 crore in today's time.

2. Mir Usman Ali Khan

Mir Usman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad was a rich guy. Actually, a filthy rich guy. Time magazine even featured him on the cover page for one of their issues. But here's how much money he had just lying around - the Nizam used to use the "Jacob Diamond", the fifth largest diamond in the world, worth approximately 100 million pounds, the size of an ostrich egg and weighing around 184.97 carats, as a paper weight!

3. Maharani Indira Devi of Cooch Behar 

The Maharani of Cooch Behar used to just love her footwear. A big fan of the famous Italian shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo, she had once ordered 100 pairs of shoes from him. Including some which were diamond studded! 


4. Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II

Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II was clearly a bit off, with his whims and fancies. How else would you describe this? He ordered his craftsman of Jaipur to make two massive silver vessels just so that he could carry Ganga Jal along on his trip to Britain. 14,000 silver coins were melted to make this gorgeous vessel and it even found a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest silver vessel.

5. Maharaja Bhupinder of Patiala

It wasn't really anything materialistic that stood out with Maharaja Bhupinder, just his love for people, or women rather. The Maharaja of Patiala had 365 wives and 88 children! There were so many women that some of the wives wouldn't even get to see the Maharaja for months at a stretch. In fact, to make sure that his wives don't think he's dead, he used to parade around the palace butt naked. Just because he could. 


6. Krishna Raja Wodeyar IV of Mysore

The Maharaja of Mysore was known to be a generous man. And being one of the wealthiest men on the planet (35 billion pound valuation) during that time, it paid to be friends with him, or working for him. Take this for example. When the Maharaja learnt that he had to do something to shield his servants from the scorching heat, he didn't just build a shelter. No, sir. He just ordered a customised Rolls Royce for them! The car was finally auctioned in August 2011 for 400,000 pounds. 


7. King Jai Singh of Alwar

The story goes that the king of Alwar was once insulted by a Rolls Royce salesman as he was mistaken for a pauper on his trip to London. That very day, Jai Singh ordered a fleet of Rolls Royce cars only to be used as garbage trucks to carry the rubbish of his city. It eventually stopped after Rolls issued an official apology to the King. 

8. Udaipur Royal Family

The Udaipur Royal family had a fascination with crystals. Seriously, they loved crystals so much they had it in everything possible, including chairs, tables, thrones, even fans!


9.  Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala in 1926 sent a trunk full of precious stones worth millions to jewellery design company Cartier. The Maharaja wanted a Parisian style necklace made for him. Cartier did come good and made for him what remains to be one of the finest pieces of jewellery ever made. 

10. Lalbagh Palace

We have always had this fixation with Britain. So much so that the Lalbagh palace in Indore had its palace gate crafted and shipped all the way from London to Indore. 



11. Jagatjit Singh, the Maharaja of Kapurthala

Very few know that one of luxury brand Louis Vuitton's very loyal customers was Jagatjit Singh, the Maharaja of Kapurthala. The Maharaja loved his LVs so much that he owned more than 60 LV trunks that he would use for his travels.

1. Good Luck Cafe, Pune

Nothing says a bun maska with chai better than a breakfast at Good Luck Cafe. Ask any Puneite and he would swear by the bun maska at this Parsee joint. A favourite haunt for most late night party goers (who return home only in the wee hours of morning), Bun Maska and chai is the perfect way to kick off your day! 

2. Tertullia , Pune 

If you're a big fan of the classic English breakfast then this is the place to be at! The elaborate breakfast menu comprises masala omelets, egg and bacon, fresh juices, and pancakes to go with great music in the background. If you are lucky, there may be a live band as well. 

3. Candies, Pali Hill, Bandra 

This place has one of the best rooftops in the city and has some amazing interiors as well. It opens its doors to the public as early as 8.30 am. The scrambled eggs and tomato-and-cheese sandwich with Mausambi juice are great options for breakfast. The chicken pie, chocolate cake slice, and lemongrass cooler are other popular choices, being distinct in their taste. 

4. Theobroma, South Mumbai 

It might seem like an unusual choice for a breakfast joint, being renowned for brownies, but when they're not baking their sweet delights, they serve some classic breakfast options. Their full English breakfast includes two sunny-side-ups, baked beans, bacon, sausages, mushroom tossed with corn and onion, hash browns and toast, making it an absolute must try.

5. Flury's, Calcutta 

Flury's is a legend in itself. Standing tall for more than five decades in Park Street, this place is always synonymous with legendary food. A great place for partaking in sandwiches, eggs Benedict and French toast, only a few places can come close to the elaborate English breakfast spread here. 

6. Chaina Ram, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi 

This sweet shop, huddled in the alleys of Delhi's Chandni Chowk area, is a great place for a perfect Sunday breakfast. Poori Chhole with Karachi Halwa, made in pure desi ghee, sums up the menu for a great Sunday breakfast. This sweet shop has been running since 1901 and is one of the oldest sweet shops in Old Delhi. It also claims to be the pioneer of Karachi Halwa. The moong dal halwa and meethi matthi during karwa chauth are a must-try. 

7. Saravana Bhavan, Connaught Place

A must-try for every South-Indian food lover in Delhi, this place serves one of the most delicious rava idlis and Mysore masala dosas. The fact that you have to wait in line before you are guaranteed a place speaks volumes about its popularity. 

8. Karim's, Delhi 

Karim's need no introduction for any foodie. Started in 1913, it is undoubtedly the city's most popular destination for treating your taste buds to good food.

While this place may be a popular lunch and dinner joint, their mouth-watering Niharis with Khamili roti make it a great option for breakfast too.

9. Haldiram, Noida 

This is a favourite haunt for most office goers in Noida and a great place for dining with family. They have an elaborate spread ranging from sandwiches to chola bhaturas and dhoklas and samosas. 

10. Diesel Café, Mangalore

If you are craving a western-style breakfast - think pancakes, waffles and cheesy omelettes - there is no place as good as Diesel café in Mangalore. Sumith Manoharan, an oil engineer who shuttles between Mangalore and Dubai, says, "I love their waffles and pancakes. I think these are the best I have had so far". The next time you are here, make sure to get there early, for it could get really crowded on a Sunday. 

11. The Ocean Pearl, Mangalore

They boast of a great South Indian breakfast and some of the crispiest vadas in Mangalore any time of the day. Other must-try dishes are Rava Idli, Mushroom Dosa, Bournvita Shake and a one-of-its-kind filter coffee. 

12. Vidyarthi Bhavan, Bangalore

This iconic restaurant sits in the heart of the city and draws hordes daily. Their masala dosas, rava wadas and idlis are a must-try. Dosas and vadas have the most wonderful crunch ever and I guarantee you won't visit this place just once. Opt for their filter coffee to wash down your meal. 

13. Smoke House Deli, Indiranagar (Banglore)

If you want to eat the best European food in Bangalore, this is the place to go. Bagels or cereals with milk and cream, along with omelettes with different herbs and stuffed ingredients like jalapenos, creamed mushrooms, grilled fish etc. are nothing short of delicious. French toasts, hash browns and pancakes make it a huge draw for English breakfast lovers. The airy ambience and hand-drawn interiors are also a huge plus.

14. Anand Bhandar, Nagpur

For the love of samosas and jalebis, there is no place like this one. The place opens as early as 8 am and is packed with people biting into samosas and jalebis. So make sure to go early in the morning so that you can sip on their piping hot chai while you bite into hot crispy samosas. They also have South Indian breakfast options like idlis and dosas.  

15. Dakshin, Chennai

What could be better than savouring South Indian food while in the capital of South India? This place serves some of the tastiest idlis and sambar, so make sure to stop by the next time you are in Chennai. 

16. Infantaria, Baga, Goa

No place dishes out better omelettes, thick shakes and croissants like this one. Located in Baga, this place is hard to miss. Try their Ferrero Rocher shake while you busy yourself with their cheesy fluffy omelettes and you're bound to purr with contentment. Their cheese and chicken croissants are also top notch so don't miss out on those. 

17. Artjuna, Panjim, Goa

This cafe near the Anjuna flea market serves up healthy sandwiches, chilled milkshakes, freshly squeezed juices and scrumptious baked goodies in its garden setting. If you're looking for more than just breakfast, try a yoga or Pilates session!

18. Raghu Dahibara Aloodum, Cuttack

People of Cuttack love Dahibaras and this place serves just that. This dahibara has its own signature style of preparation with a hint of spiciness and a mild flavor of pudina. The dahibaras are soft, succulent and have a great depth of flavor. 

19. Teapot, Mayfair, Bhuvaneshwar: 

This place serves not just one or two breakfast items but an entire breakfast buffet. The lavish spread ranges from South Indian fare of idlis and dosas to sandwiches, burgers and pancakes etc. Add to that, salads and fresh juices and you have a sumptuous breakfast spread. 

20. Café Shimla Times, Shimla

Nestled away from the hustle and bustle on the way to the Mall, Café Shimla Times offers mesmerising views of the city. Wood fired pizzas would be your best bet for breakfast while you are here.

21. Sharma Tea Stall , Lalbagh, Lucknow

This is one of the oldest places in Lucknow serving tea in a kulhad. Not only is their tea a must-try but even the samosas and bun maskas are a treat to bite into. 

22. Beyond Coffee, Hyderabad

This place is a great way to breakfast the English way. Hash browns, danish pastries, muffins, doughnuts, waffles and crispy bacon and eggs are some things to look out for while you get breakfast here.

was being written by someone somewhere else
at the same time (this is the question) some
country some town on stilts—in a broken
concentration bus or a polished make-believe desk
a cheap jungled-up clinic an empty one no supplies
for the sickly aged children deep

 

in the
rain soaked burnt tree forest slapped together hut
smoked with holiness with festered branches
and malaria strings just maybe a promotor school
that short snout bus that takes us to a new arrangement
you said that

 

would you be writing that there
would you be living that there
why would you care to write that there in that
in that  message without a message that
hunger known as life stuff where every damp speckle
and mud twig is the shout mouth hunger and that fulfillment
i do not know—
knowledge let us call it that right now
what else

 

could it be could it be that this gut water
inside burning its alphabet incomplete
calling for something you and i have
bread is it bread is it ink is it simply placement
the empty yellowing floor office

 

across from my 15th floor
as I tiptoe into the edge of it all tomorrow
i read at the university i stand up and read
someone else is standing up and reading
someone else is tiptoeing in a circle a palaver
a crossing station in Talisman en route to
Guatemala halted halfway by soldados a variety
a synonym where life splits and fissions
mind sequence pattern—reproduction silence

 

you move your arm and put
letters down on paper you move your lips
as you (but you are not here—are you—anymore)

 

spell it as you drink it as you breathe it from that
second galaxy (ah yes)
halfway down as I

 

breathe it up half ways up as she ambles
with an ancient rifle (the kind sold to Indians)
through the shadow greenness mildew heat selva
in that

 

human landscape spiraling no one knows

About This Poem

 

“After taking note of Benjamin Boone’s Jazz Quartet here in Fresno, California, where I live, I noticed how fully they gave their life to their music onstage. Nothing bothered them, not a speck of dust. Intensity was the key, total surrender to their art. I followed up with this poem, in a similar pointedness—pouring out, unabashedly, into this particular piece. This poem is a kind of follow-up to the things my great and late friend Victor Martinez would often say—a most deep thinker. A shred of one of his many thoughts is on the back side of his one poetry book, Caring for a House, published in the ’80s in the Bay Area. This back-page thought describes a quantum-like field he called the ‘Super Imagination.’ It always intrigued me—what could it be? How does it function? Perhaps he got this from one of his favorite philosophers, Heidegger. Or is it a Taoist concept? In this poem, I tackle the subject and also the impossible attempt to communicate with his notion—in a ‘third field,’ from mine, to the super-realm in existence, to his, after his death.”

At the time the time felt well spent but now
I see it was wasted. Not a waste—it just had
no point—no shape—no hourglass’ tapering
waist. At a certain point, bliss gets replaced
by disinterest. If you will allow me for once
to be honest. I left the sea’s lacy wake, waking
each day well-rested, untested, unmet. Nothing
was going to change, and that was the point.
The seabirds sang: Protect your gifts! burying
their doomed eggs in the sand—sand to heat,
to melt, shape into that chalice of time: bulb
upon bulb, curvaceous, urgent as an aging
odalisque. It was a version of love not meant
to set—the best—not trashed, but wholly left
to the mists of that idly mown lawn, the little
boat trolling a coast, bereft of tide or tempest.

According to Bollywood, your heartbreak is NOT really a heartbreak if rain gods don't bless you. Rings a bell?

Here are 9 times when Bollywood managed to create some most fuckall logics surrounding rains. Have a look!


1. Heartbreaks=Rains. Why? Because god knows everything, right?

In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, when Anjali gets friend zoned and gets her heart broken, all we saw was the song 'Tujhe yaad na meri aaye' and rain  (Apart from a sobbing Anjali (Kajol), obviously)

2. Heroine in a saree+ Hero+ an isolated place= Rain

Who can forget this iconic scene from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? While everyone playing dumb charades run to find a shelter, we see Rahul and Anjali under a concrete shelter, remembering good old days and romancing! When it comes to Hindi films, rains are supposed to improve the level of onscreen romance. Okay? IN YOUR FACE, audience.

3. *Our hero is on the verge of love confession* and IT HAS TO RAIN because it is mandatory. Get it? 

Boy loves girl. Girl loves boy. But before they express their, there must be RAIN. Yes because Bollywood's love confessions are incomplete with rains. (And to make the rains more poetic, filmmakers have the best idea, add an Arijit Singh song!) #HellYes.

4. Forget music, rains can make the perfect prelude for songs! 

Both hero and the heroine is all set to get intimate. Moods are set. Song is ready but WAIT! Only rains make the most perfect prelude before songs, okay? No rain, no love. #BollywoodLogic. 

5. Because rains= perfect entry scene for actresses. 

Remember how Maddy (Madhavan) falls in love with Reena(Dia Mirza) on a rainy night? While the driver is fixing her car, Reena walks out in rain and starts dancing with random street kids and yes, even in the dark, Maddy manages to get so mesmerized with Reena that he declares that he has found his soulmate. According to Bollywood, a rainy night is all it takes to fall in love!

6. Rain+ isolated place = Heroine & Hero taking a shelter and making love!

Before a steamy love scene and a melodious love song comes RAIN because where else can filmmakers show some close-up shots of water droplets on actor and actresses face? OKAY, Bollywood. We get it! 

7. Because best dreamy love and future sequences happen only in rains. 

Remember how Rani Mukerji dreams of a perfect 'ever after' during the title track of Hum Tum in the film? According to Bollywood's logic, the best way to show a dreamy sequence is rains! 

8. Because rains are exploited to increase the beauty and cuteness quotient of heroines!

To make an actress look cuter and gorgeous, Bollywood has its logics in place. A mushy track, rain and show the heroine chewing sugarcane( Read Veer-Zara). This is probably the most pretentious RAIN STUNT ever.  

CAN WE PLEASE SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT? Pretty please. 

9. Because tragedy and bad news always come with rains! Hell yes.

As soon as 'Sooraj Hua Madham' ends, Kajol runs to declare her love for Shah Rukh to her family but little did she notice the rain. For Bollywood filmmakers, rains= premonition of bad omens. You should have known ANJALI. You should have!
