We adults often take many things for granted. No matter how clich̩ the half empty-half full glass theory is, it does explain a very important lesson in life Рone should always be content with what we have. Unfortunately, most of us, including me, do not follow this in life. We crib, whine and crave for things that we don't possess. While there is nothing wrong with having desires, we somehow fail to notice the other side of the coin.

Inequality was, is and will always exist in the world that we live in and no one can do anything about it. However, spreading awareness about the same is something one should encourage. Enter James Collison, a Kenyan-born, England-raised, Venice-based photographer, who has travelled the world to capture snapshots of children and their bedrooms. Sounds bizarre, right? But hang on, your views will change once you go through his pictures.

This eye-opening series is called 'Where Children Sleep' and it features bedrooms of poverty-stricken kids. These social classes will both disturb and shock you at the same times. And that's not the only catch here - they are not just nameless and identity-less pictures of kids and their bedrooms - they have names and some very shocking stories to tell.

Read on.

1. Alex, 9, Rio De Janerio, Brazil

This is Alex. He is unable to go to school, so, he spends his days begging on the streets to make ends meet and at night, he sleeps on whatever he can find -  an empty bench, an old sofa, or the pavement.

2. Dong, 9, Yunnan, China

Hailing from Yunnan, China, 9-year-old Jong shares the room with his parents, sister and grandfather. His family owns just enough land to grow their own rice and sugarcane.

3. Alyssa, 8 , Harlan Country, USA

Eight-year-old Alyssa lives in a small house in Kentucky. There is no central heating in her house and it is only heated by a wooden stove. Alyssa's father works at Walmart and her mother works at McDonald's.

4. Prerna, 14, Kathmandu, Nepal

This is Prerna. She is 14 and works as a domestic help in Kathmandu, Nepal. She works 13-hours most days days and earns Rs 400 a month. She sleeps in a tiny, cell-like space at the top of her employer's house. She goes to school three times a week and dreams of becoming a doctor one day.

5. Risa, 15, Kyoto, Japan

Risa lives with 13 other women in a tea house in Kyoto. 15-year-old Risa is a "maiko" - an apprentice geisha. Her jobs consist of performing songs, dances, and playing the shamisen or the koto (traditional Japanese instruments) for visitors during feasts. She sleeps with five other women in a room that doubles as a dining room and a tea room.

6. Anonymous, 9, Ivory Coast

Despite being an orphan and refugee from the war in Liberia, this 9-year-old boy goes to school in Ivory Coast for ex-child soldiers and lives in a concrete shack with some of his classmates.

7. Indira, 7, Kathmandu, Nepal

Indira lives with her parents, brother and sister in Kathmandu. She works at a local granite quarry where she has been working since she was 3. Fortunately, she also attends school. She shares a mattress with her siblings. Their house has one room, one bed and one mattress.

8. Anonymous, 4, Rome, Italy

This Romanian boy sleeps with his family on a mattress in a field on the outskirts of Rome. Life isn't easy for him or his family. They managed to pay for their bus tickets from Romania to Italy, after begging for money. With no identity papers, his parents clean windscreens at traffic lights since they cannot obtain legal work. None of his family members have ever been to school.

9. Erlen, 14, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

This is perhaps the saddest one of the lot, 14-year-old Erlen lives in Favela in Rio, Brazil. She is pregnant for the third time. She does not have a personal bedroom, she sleeps on the floor. However, her mother swapped places with her and allowed her to sleep on the bed during the later stages of pregnancy.  She lost both her babies shortly after their births. If her new baby survives, she will be a single parent and will have to drop out of school.

10. Bilal, 6, Wadi Abu Hindi, The West Bank

Little Bilal's family are Bedouin Arabs who live in a one-room shack they built themselves beside an Israeli settlement at Wadi Abu Hindi in the West Bank. Bilal does not go to school but he helps take care of his family's 15 goats.

11. Nantio, 15, Lisamis, Kenya

A member of the Rendille tribe, Nantio lives with her two brothers and two sisters in a tent-like dome made from cattle hide and plastic, with little room to stand, in Kenya. She went to the village school for a few years but later dropped out. She is hoping that a "moran" (warrior) will select her for marriage.

12. Roathy, 8, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Calling this kid impoverished would be an understatement. The home of eight-year-old Roathy is near a rubbish dump swarming with flies on the outskirts of Cambodia, where he sleeps on a mattress made from old tires. Every morning at 6, Roathy and hundreds of other children like him are given a shower and breakfast at a local charity center before he starts work. Work for him is all about scavenging for plastic bottles and cans, which are then sold to a local recycling company. Breakfast is sometimes the only meal of the day.

13. Rinku Singh, Dinesh Patel, Uttar Pradesh, India

Rinku and Dinesh aren't a part of James Collison series but the two boys do have an inspiring story to tell. Hailing from extremely poverty-stricken families, this duo caught the eye of struggling sports agent J.B. Bernstein. While Singh is the son of a truck driver and shared a single room with eight other siblings, Patel was brought up by his grandmother in Khanpur because his parents were too poor to afford to raise him. They got an opportunity to star in Bernstein's reality TV show. This show was about training young kids in baseball. Singh emerged as a winner while Patel was announced as a not-to-miss talent. After this show the duo entered the professional baseball scene in the US and the rest as they is history.

Anant Ambani, 21, Mumbai, India

Son of the richest man in India, Mukesh Ambani, Anant's life is all about magic carpets and golden spoons. He lives in a 27-story residential skyscraper called Antilla in Mumbai.

One should worry about the work that you're actually doing, not about the money. For only when you work hard will you be successful -

If you have been told this multiple times or are trying to lead your life with this motto, please realise it's nothing more than a bucket of unadulterated crap, especially in a country like ours, where most of the time, putting in extra hours at work doesn't count for shit. It's not about being a hard worker here - it's about being a smart worker. Because no matter where you are, no matter what you do, there will always be someone willing to do the work you do for a cheaper price. So how does one manage to save money when you're hardly making any? Thank god you asked. 

1. Make a check-list of expenditures

First things first, you need to know what and how much you're spending on what every month. Consider everything from rent to regular habits like smoking and drinking. If not anything more, the list will definitely make you more conscious about where your money is going. Try rationing it out thereon. 

2. Get rid of your debts 

To begin saving anything, you need to make sure you don't have outstanding debts. If you sit down to actually calculate how much money you end up paying as interest over and above the debt, you'd realise what a menace credit cards are. Also, once you're free of debts, you can easily set aside the same amount as a saving. 

3. Set goals

The best way of doing anything in your best capacity is to make it interesting for yourself. Why would you want to do it if it's boring, right? Having said that, the easiest way to make money saving interesting is by setting goals. It could be anything from a thing you've always wanted to buy but never had the money for, or the perfect vacation you've never been able to take. Just having a goal will passively make you think about it and make you save towards it. 

4. Quit smoking

I don't really need to spell out this one, do I? Saving money, if not anything else, is a good reason to quit considering a packet nowadays costs anywhere upwards of 200 bucks. "Ouch-ouch," says the pocket. Alternatively, you could end up doing what I did - start rolling your own cigarettes. You'll end up saving more and more importantly, smoking less.

5. Invest in a PPF

A PPF or a Public Provident Fund is a long-term investment plan backed by the government of India. It's pretty cool because not only are the interest rates great comparatively, but you're also fully exempted from paying tax on it. One can invest anywhere between Rs 500 to Rs 1,50,000 per year and interest is compounded annually. This is a long-term saving.

6. Open a Demat account or invest in mutual funds.

A Demat or a dematerialized account is a trading account which allows you to buy and sell shares on a daily basis. It can reap you some great dividends if done properly or make you lose a lot of money. Either way, it is very addictive so beware. If no Demat, you could also look to invest in one of the many mutual fund schemes out there but make sure you are advised by a professional or a friend who knows the market through and through before you spend any money. This is a short term saving. If you haven't heard it already, mutual fund investment is subject to market risk. Please read the offer document carefully before investing. Say it as fast as possibly. Repeat. 

7. Consciously make an effort to be a cheapskate

They might be annoying AF but you don't how much I've come to respect them now that I know they end up saving at least twice as much as I do. Not asking you to be a freeloader but try and cut down every now and then. If you like a drink after work every day, try getting by the week without one and then treat yourself to some over the weekend. If you're used to ordering food from outside, start packing your lunch  from home, you're guaranteed to save five hundred to a thousand bucks per meal. 


8. Make the money transfer automatic

We'll never end up saving anything if we manually transferred money all the time. A lot of times we end up convincing ourselves that we need the money and don't end up depositing it in our savings. The best way to tackle this is by making the money transfer automatic right in the beginning of the month. So you'll never actually end up seeing the money you save, but you're saving nonetheless. 

9. Be obsessive

Be obsessive about your savings. Keep checking progress every month, and watch your money grow. That way, you'll not only be able to recognise and fix problems (if any) but it'll also motivate you to do more. You have a target set now, remember?

10. Stop buying impulsively

I thankfully do not have this problem, but I have a lot of friends who do. Yes, they end up buying some cool things (not always) but don't end up saving anything. Also, now that you're all serious about saving money, you need to be a professional about it - stop spending money on a depreciating asset. Sounds cool to say out loud, doesn't it? 

A good way around this is to try out the 48-hours theory. When you see something you really want to buy, put it in your wishlist by all means, but refrain from buying it for at least 48 hours. If after two days, you still think you need this particular thing, buy it. Trust me, you'll end up saving a considerable amount if you're an avid online shopper.

11. You can't FOMO-ing or YOLO-ing all the time

This is the part where a close friend/ a partner can really help out especially if you don't have any control over your emotions. FOMO(Fear of missing out) and YOLO(You only live once) are your worst enemies here because they provide a platform for everyone to go completely mental. But remember, the feeling of awesomeness won't last too long. You will most definitely be regretting the decision by next day if not immediately when you check our bank balance.

We understand that with all the various pressures, deadlines, traffic jams, pending bills and weird sleep schedules we all deal with splitting headaches every now and then. If you're one of those who quickly pop a pill to get rid of it, this is for you. Here are a few quick home remedies that can help you deal with the pain and without any long term effects.

1. Ginger

Ginger is known to reduce inflammation of the blood vessels in the head, hence helps in reducing the pain. All you need to do is grate some ginger, boil it in water for some time and consume this once or twice a day.

2. Lavender oil

Lavander itself has a very soothing fragrance and can be a great remedy for alleviating headaches. Add few drops of lavender oil in boiling water and inhale it. Another thing you can do is add a few drops of almond oil with it and massage your forehead to ease out the pain.

3. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a magic spice that can successfully treat headaches. Here's how to use it: Grind some cinnamon sticks into a powder and add some water to make a thick paste. Apply it on your forehead and temples and take a nap for 30 minutes. Then wash it off with lukewarm water and you can thank us later!

4. Do simple stretches

Few simple stretches can actually help reduce the intensity of the headache. Just move your chin upwards and downwards, left and right and bend your neck sideways towards the shoulder and the headache will be reduced to a great extent.

5. Holy basil

Simply put 3 or 4 freshly plucked holy basil leaves in a cup of boiling water and let it simmer. Add a little honey, black pepper and sip the tea slowly. You can also chew some fresh basil leaves, or inhale the steam after boiling basil in a pot of water.

6. Apple with some salt

The saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is quite true because they help to restore the acid-alkaline balance in the body. If you wake up with a headache, simply eat a piece of apple sprinkled with salt and sip some warm water after. Or if not apple then simply add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water, with honey and some lemon juice. Drink it 2 or 3 times a day and you are sorted.

The city’s streets are densely shelved with rows
of salt and packaged hair. Intent on air,
the funk of crave and function comes to blows

 

with any smell that isn’t oil—the blare
of storefront chicken settles on the skin
and mango spritzing drips from razored hair.

 

The corner chefs cube pork, decide again
on cayenne, fry in grease that’s glopped with dust.
The sizzle of the feast adds to the din

 

of children, strutting slant, their wanderlust
and cussing, plus the loud and tactless hiss 
of dogged hustlers bellowing past gusts

 

of peppered breeze, that fatty, fragrant bliss
in skillets. All our rampant hunger tricks
us into thinking we can dare dismiss

 

the thing men do to boulevards, the wicks
their bodies be. A city, strapped for art,
delights in torching them—at first for kicks,

 

to waltz to whirling sparks, but soon those hearts
thud thinner, whittled by the chomp of heat.
Outlined in chalk, men blacken, curl apart.

 

Their blindly rising fume is bittersweet,
although reversals in the air could fool
us into thinking they weren’t meant as meat.

 

Our sons don’t burn their cities as a rule,
born, as they are, up to their necks in fuel.

Nargis Goes BRAless as She Feels Hot

This ancient art of breathing can cure nearly all diseases. The following breathing exercises are a gateway to healthy life and help you to realise your inner self.

1. Bhramari Pranayama for throat

In this pranayama the breathing sounds like a humming bee. To do this, sit in a relaxed posture and close your ears with your thumbs, place your index fingers on the temple and close your eyes with the other three fingers. Slowly inhale through your nose and hold it for a few seconds. Keeping your mouth closed, slowly exhale by making a humming sound. Repeat it 5 times.

2. Anulom-Vilom Pranayama for eye sight and heart diseases

This pranayama is all about deep breathing and has no sound as such. For this exercise sit in a comfortable position, close your right nostril with your thumb and slowly exhale from the left nostril. After exhaling slowly and steadily inhale through the same nostril. Do the same process with your left nostril with your ring finger and exhale through the right nostril. Repeat this process for 2-5 minutes.

3. Kapalbhati Pranayama for reducing belly flat

This pranayama is all about forceful and active inhalation and exhalation, where you have to inhale normally and exhale forcefully. During exhalation the stomach muscles should be moved fiercely (pulling it closer to your back). Do this breathing exercise for 2-5 minutes.

4. Ujjayi Pranayama for snoring issues and thyroid

Start this breathing exercise with normal inhalation and exhale completely. Bow your head down blocking the free flow of air and inhale as long as you can. Hold back for 2-5 seconds. While exhaling, close your right nostril with your right thumb and breathe out through your left nostril. You can repeat this exercise for ten to twelve times.

5. Bhastrika Pranayama to strengthen your lungs

This breathing exercise starts with deep breath-in where we expand our stomach. The air is completely breathed out with strength, sucking your stomach towards the backbone. During inhalation, your stomach should be extended to the maximum. Do this exercise for 1-2 minutes and do take rest.

When you came across a V8 4.7L Maserati 32-valve engine most people would not think: I wonder if I can build a motorcycle around that? Clearly, most people are not Ludovic Lazareth, a custom builder and modifier of bikes and cars who is well known for his exotic designs and builds.
