Singapore became the first city/country to get driverless cars on to its roads, beating tech giant Uber who has been developing the technology for a couple of years now. But before you get ahead of yourselves, Singapore is currently only in the trial stage but passengers do get to ride in the car and for free. 

Select members of the public can hail free rides through their smartphone to get a ride from one of the fleet of driverless cars operated by nuTonomy, an independent vehicle software startup. The company is using Renault and Mitsubishi electric vehicles that have been equipped with the company's software and cameras. Currently nuTonomy is using six cars for the trial and are driving them in a selected part of town. Since the cars are only being tested, there is a driver sat in the passenger seat to ensure maximum safety. 

So why Singapore, you're probably wondering? 

Singapore is already heavily dependent on taxis and most people hail cabs as its cheaper than owning a car. It's also a very organised and disciplined city as is the traffic, which makes Singapore the perfect starting point for driverless cars. nuTonomy hopes to have a complete self-driving fleet in Singapore by 2018.

The first movie that comes to our mind is Vikas Bahl's Queen. The Kangana Ranaut starrer made us want to get out of toxic relationships and start life afresh with great confidence and self-love. 

2. Pyaar Ka Punchnama

The one Bollywood film that gets singledom right is Pyaar Ka Punchnama. Three dudes figuring out women and giving up at end makes for a relatable story for guys who don't understand women. Not to forget that legendary monologue by Kartik Aaryan who tries to explain what's wrong with women.

3. 500 Days Of Summer

Imagine what would've happened if Summer had said 'yes' to Tom in 500 Days of Summer. Not only would it have ended in a disastrous marriage, it would have also made both their lives irreparably unhappy.

4. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

We hated Kareena for 'friendzoning' Imran Khan in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. However, the movie tried to give a strong message about how every friendship didn't have to turn into a relationship. Imran Khan screaming in the end is the best scene and conveyed how it feels when you let go of your inhibitions.

5. Eat, Pray, Love

Julia Roberts tries to forget her painful past by going on a spiritual journey. Her solo journey takes her to destinations that teach her a thing or two about life.

6. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

We can't help but weep for SRK in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. A sad tale of unrequited love, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa warns you about what can happen if your feelings aren't reciprocated.

7. Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji

Madhur Bhandarkar's Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji tried to drive home the message that there are many other fish in the pond in case you get dumped. And that wasting time and energy over someone who doesn't deserve you is totally not worth it.

8. Legally Blonde

Elle Woods is an inspiration to people who have their heart broken. Her sheer determination makes her crack the law entrance exam and she even solves a case with her peculiar wit.   

9. Bridget Jones's Diary

If you love chronicling your life then this movie is for you. Bridget Jones, who is on the verge of being called a spinster, gets cheated on. She then decides to take charge of life and finds the love of hers. This movie gives one mad hope about a Mr Darcy always waiting around the corner.

10. Wild

Cheryl Strayed's book that turned into a movie shows a woman's journey through the difficult Pacific Crest Trail. With Reese Witherspoon as the protagonist, Wild shows the journey of self-discovery after a bad relationship.

11. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

This film is a hilarious account of what happens when you end up meeting your ex and her new boyfriend on the same Hawaiian vacation that you took to try and forget about her. With Jason Siegel in the lead, the film does an excellent job of conveying the feeling of getting dumped.

Pippa the dog always runs towards Martin Studer, a postman from Brisbane, Australia, whenever she sees him – she loves getting mail! In fact, the pooch enjoys it so much, the postman even writes tiny letters specially for her not to upset the good girl. "Sometimes, Pippa comes out for the daily delivery but there's no mail for her to collect," Studer writes on Facebook. "So I have to improvise."

using the shopping cart as a cane that steadies us.

 

I’ll wait at register two in my green sweater
with threadbare elbows, smiling
because you’ve forgotten the bag of day-old pastries.

 

The cashier will tell me a joke about barbers as I wait.
He repeats the first line three times
but the only word I understand is barber.

 

Over the years we’ve caught inklings
of our shrinking frames and hunched spines.

 

You’re a little confused
looking for me at the wrong register with a bag
of almost-stale croissants clenched in your hand.

 

The first time I held your hand it felt enormous in my own.
Sasquatch, I teased you, a million years ago.

 

Over here, I yell, but not in a mad way.

 

We’re laughing.
You have a bright yellow pin on your coat that says, Shalom!

 

Senior Discount, you say.
But the cashier already knows us.
We’re everyone’s favorite customers.

In what could be described as its biggest privacy policy change, world's most popular instant messaging service, WhatsApp will now share user data including your contact list with its parent company, Facebook.

This is aimed at more user specific 'targeted-ads and providing better friendship suggestions based user data. 

"By coordinating more with Facebook, we'll be able to do things like track basic metrics about how often people use our services and better fight spam on WhatsApp. And by connecting your phone number with Facebook's systems, Facebook can offer better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them." WhatsApp said in a blog post.

The policy change is in sharp contrast with the earlier stands on privacy of user data, despite WhatsApp being an ad-free service.

Even while many have expressed concerns over the privacy of the user data, experts say the text and multimedia content sent through WhatsApp will still remain secure and Facebook won't be able to access them.

This is because of the end-to-end encryption used by WhatsApp which makes any data sent through it accessible only to the sender and receiver.

Here's how to opt out

There is a way to prevent WhatsApp from sharing your number with Facebook however. But you only have a 30 day window to do this. After you have updated WhatsApp on your phone, go to settings and click on Account. Here you'll find a new 'Share my account info' box. Uncheck the box and you're set.

Macher Jhol might be the staple food for Kolkatans but when in Kolkata (Calcutta), it would not be wrong to say food lovers love to gorge on Chinese food. Well, the liking for cuisine could be both for authentic or modified versions. The history of Chinese cuisine in Kolkata dates back to the 18th century with a large number of Chinese locals settling on Indian soil. Chinatown (Tangra) is home to several Cantonese families and one need not worry about their food experience. Let's take a look at some of the best rated Chinese restaurants and dining places. 

1. Eau Chew

Set up in the 1920s, Eau Chew is currently the oldest surviving family-owned Chinese restaurant in India. Apart from giving culinary wonders like Chimney Soup and Josephine Noodles, the place is supremely famous for assorted Chinese cuisine. Run by the fourth-gen of the Huang family, Eau Chew will leave you amazed with its simplicity and adequate variety.

Some of the most ordered delicacies are Pork Spare Ribs, Roast Chilli Pork, Sauteed Greens, Meat Ball Soup, Steamed Fish with Soy Sauce, Chicken in Wine Sauce, Flaming Fish and Fish with Chilli Black Bean. What makes this place different from the competition is their stress on retaining original in flavours. Avoiding ajinomoto and oil while following the path of undercooking makes Eau Chew a memorable eating experience. 

2. Tung Fong

Run by a Chinese family, Tung Fong is one of the few restaurants in Tangra which serves a buffet in the afternoon. Dining at Tung Fong becomes an experience with the right combination of taste and ambience.

Apart from serving mouth-watering good food, the place will also leave in awe with its elegant atmosphere and quick service. With waiters continuing to serve the delicacies with a smile, eating at Tung Fong becomes memorable. 3. Kim Fa

Do not judge a book by its cover as Kim Fa might not attract you with its average look from the outside. Move over the questionable ambience and focus on the yummy tasty morsels of Seafood Soup, Chilli Chicken Dry, Lemon Chicken, Chilli Prawns, and Golden Fried Prawns. 4. Hatari Restaurant

Hatari Restaurant offers an array of lip-smacking sumptuous Cantonese food that would linger on your taste buds. This multi-cuisine restaurant boasting of several outlets opened its first restaurant in 1966 and was named after Howard Hawks' film 'Hatari'.

From originally being absolutely a Chinese restaurant, they have introduced other cuisine as well. Dry Chili Pork, Crispy Golden Prawn, Singaporean Noodles, Mongolian Prawn, Chicken Momo with Soup, Fish with Oyster Sauce, Brown Glazed Duck are the most recommended food items at Hatari.

5. China Whites

Situated in Gariahat Road, China Whites is popular among the younger lot. The reason for this demand is their love for hookah. A contemporary and cozy setting makes the ambience worth a visit. Coming to the food, it gives neck to neck competition to other Chinese eateries of the area. Prawn Tavanjan, Sliced Fish with Hot Garlic Sauce, Tai Chi Chicken, Pak Choi Exotic Vegetable, Crab In Hot Garlic, Fish Chilli Wine and Mix Sea Food Hot Garlic are some of the hit items among youngsters and office goers. 

6. Chinoiserie  

Chinoiserie at Taj Bengal is what Chinese food lovers swear by. The quality and service is impeccable and the selection of appetising spread of dishes from Sichuan and Canton. Being one of the posh places to relish Chinese cuisines, average cost for two people is Rs. 3600 at Chinoiserie.

Right from the grand interiors of the place to the tasty food palate, the place will register a place in your mind. Signature dishes like the Peking Duck, Crackling Spinach, Pork Dim Sum, Stir-fried Veggies with Mushroom, Golden Corn, Broccoli in Black Pepper Sauce, Stir-fried Spicy Lamb and Mongolian Chicken are definitely must-trys. 

7. Beijing Restaurant

Not the Chinese capital but this restaurant can definitely be called the food capital of China Town. Beijing, one of the oldest and most popular Chinese restaurants in Kolkata, is insanely popular for its authentic cuisine.

From delicious spring button mushrooms, chicken dumplings, spring prawns to Lung Fung Chicken Soup, Cantonese chicken, Szechwan duck, chicken in black bean sauce, Chicken American Chopsuey and Chicken Cantonese rice, Beijing reflects the right balance of spices and flavours. 

8. Golden Joy

Another gem of Tangra, Golden Joy justifies its name in fashion. The bar cum restaurant is ideally placed between admirable slick ambiences in affordable budget. Located at Matherswar Tala Road, the restaurant has an enviable open space which can accommodate 200-250 diners at a time.

The Indian-Chinese food items like Dim Sum, Chopsey, Chowmein, Manchurian, Fried Rice and Noodles along with liquor at a reasonable price makes Golden Joy a fairly popular place. Moving to their extensive menu, it is another mesmerising menu to choose from - Chilli Garlic Paneer, Dragon Chicken, Ginger Chicken, Salt & Pepper Chicken, Korean Fish Sticks and Kung Pao.

9. Fung Fa

Located near the entrance of Chinatown, Fung Fa is an attractive spot for Cantonese food lovers. Apart from enjoying the advantage of easy access to the main road, Fung Fa is hailed for its good food and cheap liquor.

Safe to call it a dimly lit average décor restaurant where one can enjoy tasty food without burning a hole in pocket. Some of the recommended dishes are Fish in Oyster sauce, Shredded Chicken, Honey-Pepper Fish, Mixed Rice Noodles etc.

10. Kafulok

For generous portions on a reasonable budget, Kafulok is where you should head. One of the popular eateries among the middle class income group in Chinatown, Kafulok is buzzing with family crowd during weekends. Its motto of not compromising on quality despite being affordable makes the restaurant most talked about.

The décor is basic but they compensate it with fast service and gastronomical wonders. Some of the most recommended dishes are Chilli Chicken, Lemon Chicken, Chilli Garlic Pepper Chicken, Garlic Prawn, Mixed Hakka Noodles, Fish in Hot Garlic Sauce, Pepper Chicken and Hakka Sui Mai.

The London based Michelin starred restaurant specialising in dimsums opened in 2015 is a hit among the diners. Yauatcha translates to 'Yau having tea' which despite being deemed as fairly expensive is swarmed with food lovers.

Apart from its core strength of serving authentic dim sums, they are also known for bringing a range of Chinese dishes on the table. Shiitake Mushroom Dumpling, vegetarian poached Peking dumpling, Crispy Duck Roast, Spicy Aubergine Sato Bean, Prawn Cheung Fun and Stir-Fried Penang Kwetio Noodles are some of the must try dishes if you plan to visit the place anytime soon. Yauatcha also has one of the finest bars in the Kolkata offering a selection of signature cocktails.

12. Chowman

The tagline of this fancy restaurant reads 'Think Chinese…Think Chowman', which is enough for you to add it to the must visit list. Started in 2010, Chowman has become one of Kolkata's favourite destinations for fine dining under the leadership of Debaditya Chaudhury.

Their claim to fame is their lavish spread of chicken, prawn, fish, duck, lamb, pork, crab etc. Apart from the much talked about authentic Chinese cuisine, Chowman is equally famous for their ambience that boasts of décor from the markets of China and Hong Kong and sauces and crockery being imported from Thailand & China.

Ode to Richmond Hill

 
Rajiv Mohabir

then the drunk teen scatters
a cascade of copper on cement,
the old Uncle yells, eyes silver
eyes in disbelief, Pick up yuh
paisa, na man! no worry
on this slate day youths dem
speak no Hindi to know paisa
means money, a taxi speeds 
by blaring chutney remix
Kaise Bani and you remember
your Aji dropping her rum
at Aunty’s party to jump up
and your mother’s awkward Hindi—
you bit your fingers with each roti
she rolled, each mantra she taught you
floods your throat in front
of this puja shop on 127th and Liberty
front strung with plastic marigolds,
a replica strung of polypropylene
like you are now and not like
long time when Par-Aja came
from India, you are a forgery
that will one day burn
not on a pyre but in an incinerator,
not on a riverbank, but
in a crematorium, your prayers
in Hindi accented in English alveolars
neither devas nor prophets
recognize as supplication
but on Liberty Avenue
in the waft of a spliff drag,
and sandalwood a coolie Uncle
in a kurta mouths Marley
as you walk by
you start to sing praise
to Queens where you are
Chandra’s son or so
and so’s buddy ke pickni,
where you wipe oil from doubles
on your jeans and cuss up
the car that backs into stacked crates
of strawberries, to where you
return after three years
and Richmond Hill opens
its coolie arms pulls you close
and in your ear whispers
dis time na long time.

“Richmond Hill is a vibrant community of Indo-Caribbean people who make up a large immigrant group in New York City. I have lived and worked in the area multiple times in my life and consider it one of my homes. This poem is in praise of its syncretisms, its people, and its poets like Sundar Popo who wrote the chutney music classic Kaise Bani.”
