Whether you absolutely love the idea of marriage or loathe it, an emerging trend shows that many youngsters don't have a very favourable attitude towards the once dominant social institution. Many youngsters in India prefer to marry much later as compared to the former generation, if at all. We explore why.

1. The C-word

They say being the eternal romantic in the prevalent hookup culture is a special kind of hell. And wanting to get hitched is the epitome of being an eternal romantic. In modern relationships, where hook-ups and one-night stands are paramount, commitment in relationships is a tough thing to find. Marriages are an even longer shot. Marriage is hard work. Living with someone means taking into account another person's feelings, moods, needs and desires instead of focusing just on your own. This extra work has emotional and financial costs, which many are just not willing to put in.

2. Educating and empowering oneself is a priority- marriage can wait

Gone are the days when girls belonged in the kitchen and boys in their fathers' business, making education redundant. Pursuing higher education and building careers in esteemed institutions in the country as well as abroad is of prime importance to the youth now. The years invested in higher education automatically push the age of marriage further than ever before.

3. Living in is the way to go

Urban societies, as well as the law, are progressively becoming more accepting of live-in relationships and the youth is all for it. Like a marriage, but easier to get out of if things don't work out, live-in relationships are the way to go for many young couples.

4. Career ambitions come first

Young men and women are driven and ambitious. Their pursuit of career goals and the desire to climb the corporate ladder leaves little room for marriage, children and dirty nappies. Family expectations take a backseat in order to facilitate them to progress in the corporate world.

5. Who wants all that responsibility when you can choose freedom?

One's twenties and thirties are years of a carefree existence with spontaneous plans, parties and general fun. Marriage, on the other hand, brings serious responsibility of the emotional as well as financial well-being of another individual and consequently, of raising an entire family. Such an existence just doesn't cut it for many and the simplest solution is to not get married at all.

6. Marriage and independence do not go hand in hand and that's an issue.

Especially for women, getting hitched equals getting rid of a familiar and comfortable way of life and taking a plunge into the unknown. It often comes with a significant loss of freedom. Several women these days prefer to ditch the idea of getting married completely rather than have a set of in-laws breathing down their neck about what to do and what not to do.

7. Me Time

Many young people choose to invest time in themselves and their relationship with self as against that with another person. They chase travel, experiences and dreams rather than settling down. As a result, they lose interest in the concept of marriage and end up surpassing the idea in its entirety.
