Announcing Four New Chancellors, Poems for the New Year
"Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, / Healthy, free, the world before me," writes Whitman in "Song of the Open Road." As we begin 2017, we offer a selection of poems to help set you on your way.
Resolve to find your new arts job this year with our weekly Jobs for Poets roundup. This week's listing includes positions at The New School in New York, Hugo House in Seattle, and Brescia University in Kentucky, among others. Check Stanza each Wednesday for more.
P.O.P: Willie Perdomo
"Writing poetry has always been a way to combat the times I've been silenced," says Willie Perdomo in this new P.O.P video, in which he reads a poem and discusses the courage and risk involved in writing poetry, and not taking poetry as a luxury.
Reflect on transformations and changes in the new year by watching this week's new Poetry Breaks video, featuring Stanley Kunitz reading his poem "The Layers": "the next chapter / in my book of transformations / is already written. / I am not done with my changes."
We Did It!
With your generous help, this holiday season we met our fundraising goal of $50,000 to support our free programs and publications for poets, readers, and educators. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on the support and participation of individuals like you to sustain our efforts.
The Academy of American Poets is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
Thanks for being a part of the Academy of American Poets community. To learn about other programs, including National Poetry Month, Poem in Your Pocket Day, the annual Poets Forum, and more, visit Poets.org.
