[AffirmationstoDe-Stress] MORNING COFFEE Posted: 27 Sep 2012 05:50 PM PDT   "Endless possibilities exist for all of us."   New decisions and changes are frightening but they can also be exhilarating!   No matter what pressures you're under, what tough decisions you face, keep in mind that it is possible to turn chaos and turmoil into an exciting beginning.   Look at all the options life has to offer. Ask yourself how those options fit in with your deepest desires. Whether your desires are intellectual, artistic, spiritual, or physical, you can make a decision, now, to make them into realities.   Do this and you will soar over boundaries, and recognize that your endless possibilities have no limits.  Jane Powell     NEEDLESS WORRY   A story worth dusting off is about a man who bragged: "I only worry about two things - whether I am sick or well. If I'm well, I have nothing to worry about. And if I'm sick, I've only got two things to worry about - whether I get better or whether I die. If I get better, I have nothing to worry about. And if I die, I've only got two things to worry about - whether I go to heaven or hell. If I go to heaven, I have nothing to worry about. And if I go to hell, I'll be so busy greeting my friends I won't have time to worry. So why worry?"   Regardless of how you feel about his view of life after life, he makes a good point about worry. There is really no room for needless concern about the future. I like what Ralph Waldo Emerson said about worry:      "Some of your hurts you have cured,    And the sharpest you still have survived,    But what torments of grief you endured    From evil that never arrived."   If you're like me, more than once you've found yourself enduring "torments of grief" from evil that has not yet arrived and probably never will. Almost without our being aware, healthy concern for the future can be transformed into cancerous worry. "What if?" we ask. "What if something happens?" "What if things don't turn out?" "What if.?" Worry can become an all-too-constant companion we might wish would just go away and leave us alone.   And I'm sure about one thing: that my high anxiety about the future doesn't help me with tomorrow's troubles; it only succeeds in ruining today's happiness. The Dalai Lama said something similar. When asked what surprised him most about humanity, he answered, "Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."   I believe that needless worry, more than anything else, has kept me from really living. It has never helped me solve real problems; it has only destroyed what happiness I might have found in the present. What is worry other than habitual fear of the future? It is a habit of feeling fear. And, like any other habit, it can be hard to break. But also, like any other habit, it CAN be replaced with a better one.   So, what might happen if you should decide to let go of that needless worry -- just for today? Can you do it, for one day? What do you have to lose besides anxiety? And look what you may gain - a chance to REALLY LIVE.   Sounds like decent trade to me.   Steve Goodier   Life as it is   Whatever may happen, there is no need for dismay. Always, there is the opportunity to creatively and successfully deal with the things life sends your way.   There's nothing to be gained by wishing that things had turned out differently. And you can't be your best when you're complaining or regretting or worried or dismayed.   Every situation generates a new set of positive possibilities. [AffirmationstoDe-Stress] MORNING COFFEE Posted: 27 Sep 2012 05:49 PM PDT   "Measures of success are integral to realizing your aspirations."   When you set goals, it's important to make them measurable so you can keep score of your small and large successes along the way.   The very act of setting a goal and breaking it down into smaller parts, and then completing those parts one-by-one, will make you feel accomplished.   Remember that you can't hit a target you can't see!   Identify and clarify the smaller parts. With each smaller goal achieved reward yourself because you're now one step closer to your dreams – something to celebrate and be proud of.   ©Jane Powell     LESSONS FROM THE COURT Life lessons can come from unexpected places. I played racquetball for many years, and some of the greatest lessons I learned while playing were not about the game, but about life. I wrote this piece a few years ago, but after a few more years of living, I've made some changes. Here are some of the more important life lessons that that I learned from the court: 1. People play better when they are encouraged. It's true in all of life. People do better when others cheer them on, rather than criticizing, condemning and judging. My influence as a parent, a leader, a supervisor or a friend is most effective when I encourage those around me. 2. When two or more people occupy a small space, they need to get along. It's against the rules of the game to push people around. This principle applies to any small space: homes, schools, places of work, communities and even our planet. 3. The only way to get better is to practice, on the court and off. In every area of life, the only way to improve is to practice. Confidence takes practice. Leadership takes practice. Nurturing a mind or a spirit takes practice. Improving relationships with others takes practice. Simply learning how to be happy takes practice. And remember, there are always people willing to help. 4. Much of success is about paying attention. On the court, those who lose their focus, lose games. In life, people who are too distracted by yesterday's regrets or tomorrow's problems will never experience the fullness and joy of today. 5. There are always people who will do better than you. Always. But your job is not to be the best. If you simply strive to be YOUR best, you will have succeeded. 6. When playing doubles, cooperation is essential. No team, no family, no nation will succeed that is plagued with internal squabbling. 7. Failures are lessons. When I lose a game badly, it is not a personal failure. Rather, I thank my opponent for the free lesson and figure out where I need to work. Failures are not endings; they are valuable opportunities to learn. 8. It isn't over until the last point is scored. Many victories are snatched after one comes back from almost insurmountable odds. So it is with life. 9. Work can be fun, but fun should never become merely work. A racquetball game is still a game and should be enjoyed. In life, there is always joy to be found and shared. 10. In racquetball, the only way to score is to serve. Likewise, service is key to life. Individuals and institutions that make a difference find ways to serve others. And those people who are happiest and most satisfied with their lives are those who have learned the value of giving their time, energy and resources away. Great lives are built on service. Poem-A-Day: At Hobby Lobby by Rosa Alcala Posted: 27 Sep 2012 03:11 AM PDT Having trouble viewing this email? Click here At Hobby Lobby by Rosa Alcalá   She tosses a bolt of fabric into the air. Hill country, prairie, a horse trots there. I say three yards, and her eyes say more: What you need is guidance, a hand that can zip a scissor through cloth. What you need is a picture of what you've lost. To double the width against the window for the gathering, consider where you sit in the morning. Transparency's appealing, except it blinds us before day's begun. How I long to captain that table, to return in a beautiful accent a customer's request. My mother kneeled down against her client and cut threads from buttons with her teeth, inquiring with a finger in the band if it cut into the waist. Or pulled a hem down to a calf to cool a husband's collar. I can see this in my sleep and among notions. My bed was inches from the sewing machine, a dress on the chair forever weeping its luminescent frays. Sleep was the sound of insinuation, a zigzag to keep holes receptive. Or awakened by a backstitch balling under the foot. A needle cracking? Blood on a white suit? When my baby's asleep I write to no one and cannot expect a response. The fit's poor, always. No one wears it out the door. But fashions continue to fly out of magazines like girls out of windows. Sure, they are my sisters. Their machines, my own. Graffiti meets sculpture in colorful figures that explode through the canvas   A French artist is blending graffiti, sculpture and traditional painting to create a series of stunning artworks that literally jump out of the canvas.   Marchal Mithouard, whose tag name is Shaka, uses a variety of everyday objects for his striking pieces which feature aggressive figures portrayed in stunning vibrant colours.   The technique, known as bas-relief, involves making certain elements of the work more prominent than others by either carving away material or adding new layers. It is not new having been used widely in Italy during the Renaissance and even earlier in other parts of the world.     One of the incredible pieces by French artist Marchal Mithouard, who goes by the monicker Shaka, which blend graffiti with sculpture     Mithouard, whose works appear to have an underlying theme of revolt and rebellion, has created art that literally jumps out of the canvas   However by incorporating street art techniques and using a vast array of bright and vivid colours, Mithouard has created something that is decisively 21st century.
