Yoga is not just a physical practice, but a deeply spiritual one as well. These stories of people who have used yoga to overcome trauma prove just how strong the healing powers of this ancient practice are. 

John Thurman, 9/11 survivor

John Thurman was working at the Pentagon the day the plane hit. After spending time in Germany during the Cold War, and then Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War, he thought that a desk job in Washington would surely be a safe bet. But it wasn't. 

He was one of the more fortunate survivors – he wasn't cut or burned, but he had inhaled a lot of smoke, so he was on oxygen and a breathing tube for 24 hours. He was discharged from the hospital a week later and he went back to work soon after. That's when he began to notice signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). "I would take the Metro down and we would stop at the Pentagon station," Thurman said. "There'd just be this feeling of dread even pulling through the station. The first time I was back in the building, I could still smell that kerosene smell, which was unnerving."

When he slept he had nightmares and flashbacks. The doctors gave him medication to help him sleep, but it didn't help because Thurman was also dealing with a heavy dose of survivor's guilt. Of the 126 people who were killed at the Pentagon that day, 26 were his co-workers.

Six months later, he had healed physically but not mentally, when his friend suggested that he try yoga. "I had doubts, but I was willing to try anything," Thurman said. "Taking drugs to sleep, taking drugs to ... just everything -- it felt like a wet blanket. And so I was willing to try anything. And pretty fast, within a few weeks, I was feeling some of the benefits."

Thurman began to feel relaxed for the first time in months. But more importantly, the "mind chatter" he experienced with PTSD had quieted. In fact, yoga helped him so much that he took a teacher training course, quit the army eventually and began to teach yoga at the Pentagon! His goal was two-fold – introducing men to yoga because according to him, "it's a good workout. You get your cardiovascular on, you're building strength, but you're building flexibility and length in your muscles. The other (reason) was to specifically bring it to service members and veterans." He wants to help others overcome PTSD through yoga like he did.

Elaine (name changed), rape victim 

Elaine was brutally raped as a young girl and somehow nobody in her family noticed, despite the fact that she came to the dinner table covered in bruises from top to bottom. She resorted to all sorts of extremes in order to get somebody's attention, like binge eating and purging, taking laxatives and drastically cutting down her calorie intake. Over time, she developed a history of unhealthy relationships with men, self-destructive behaviour, an inability to trust her emotions and a distrust of her body. 

She was diagnosed with PTSD at the Eating Recovery Center outside of Denver, Colorado where her therapists first considered using yoga to help her heal. According to them, Elaine was very agitated, in a constant state of hyper-arousal and alert to every movement in the room and every sound, even the rise of an eyebrow. But when it came to talking about her emotions, she would shut down. Instead of relying on 'talk therapy,' which dredges up old memories and brings back the pain, they felt that 'body therapy' would be much more effective. 

To do so, she first had to spend some time getting to know her body, a little bit at a time, through exercises that improve body consciousness and awareness. For Elaine, who had dissociated from her body and become numb, doing gentle supported backbends began to wake up her body and get her blood flowing. Building a strong, capable body went a long way toward helping her develop a strong, centred mind.

Aline Marie, clinically depressed

Aline Marie was in a really dark place and was about to end her life. "When I hated everyone on the planet, they hated me back. When I thought the world was against me, it was," she says. "Life sucked. Hard. There was no escape from the nightmare. The more I focused on how awful it was, the worse it got. I completely gave up in July of '03, ready to end my life on this planet, because in my naiveté I had created a reality of no love, no hope, no light, just surrounded by darkness and alone. I had $10 in my pocket and had given myself 3 options: get a sandwich, put gas in the truck or try a yoga class."

She had eaten at the restaurant she worked at, her truck ran pretty well on barely any fuel and she wanted to give life one more chance before she gave up, so she picked the yoga class. And it changed her life.

She felt pretty awkward at first, had no idea what the poses were called and couldn't do half of them. But when she lay down, she experienced a freedom and a release that brought tears to her eyes. "I was hooked. Every spare dime I had went to taking yoga classes. I practised 3, 4, 5 times a day trying to find that feeling of freedom over and over again. I never wanted to leave that feeling," she adds. 

"My body started changing. I was not as angry. I was not as stressed out. I now knew what to do when I got upset: find a quiet place and breathe. I became so connected to my heart that I found this delicious gorgeousness in loving other people, strangers even. I started to find appreciation in the delicate quirks of other people, as well as my own. No one was out to "get me" anymore. In fact, everyone was a potential person who could help me somehow and whom I could help somehow."

Today, she too is a yoga teacher, with several corporate clients whom she works with to alleviate stress.

Sonam Kapoor Breasts Become Centre of Attraction

Different cultures have different traditions. While some are distinctively charming, others are downright bizarre.

1. 'Night Hunting' in Bhutan

Known as Bomena in eastern parts of the Himalayan kingdom, young men looking for love and marriage set out at night for a different kind of hunt. They break into the rooms of eligible spinsters and spend the night there. If caught, they have to marry the girl, or work in her father's fields as a punishment. 

This tradition is much debated today as women are subjected to rape and an invasion of privacy.

2. Bullet Ant gloves of the Satere-Mawe tribe

When boys of this Amazonian tribe come of age, they must prove their manhood in a tradition that's torturous and terrifying. The young men trap bullet ants which are then drugged by a medicine man, who places the deadly creatures in woven mitts. 

It is said the sting of a bullet ant can be compared to a bullet hitting the flesh. The young men then have to wear the mitts on their hands and dance for ten minutes to take their mind of the pain. Satere-Mawe men have to go through this ritual at least 20 times in their lifetime.

3. Thaipusam

Celebrated by Hindus in Southern India and South East Asia, the festival of Thaipusam observes the victory of Lord Murugan over an evil spirit. Devotees pierce themselves with sharp objects through different parts of their bodies while going into a complete trance. Some even go as far as pulling vehicles with hooks pierced into their backs.

4. Bathroom ban after marriage

Newly married couples of the Tidong community in Indonesia are prohibited from using the washroom for three days after their marriage. Breaking the rules of the observation will bring bad luck in their married life like stillbirth and death.

Relatives of the couple supervise them over the three days after which they are bathed and may answer their calls of nature.

5. Penis Festival, Japan

Better known as the Kanamara Matsuri, devotees carry a large sculpture in the shape of a penis and parade through the streets of Kawasaki in Japan. It is said that a demoness with vaginal teeth seduced men to their deaths until temple priests used a metal d**k to destroy her deadly secret weapon. 

Several sex workers take part in this festival to pray for good health and protection against STDs.

6. Consuming the dead

The Yanomami tribe who reside in the Amazon rainforest bordering Venezuela and Brazil are repelled by the idea of burying the dead. They believe the no physical trace of the body should be left in order to allow the spirit to rest in peace. The ash and bone powder obtained after cremation is mixed into a plantain soup which is consumed by the deceased's family. 

By doing this, the Yanomami believe the soul of their lost and loved one will reside within them.

7. Famadihana, Madagascar

Death is a time of sorrow and silence even if it means visiting the grave of a loved one who passed away years ago. Not in the Hauts Plateaux of Madagascar though, because July and September witnesses the custom of Famadihana. The 'turning of the dead' involves exhuming the remains of deceased relatives and re-wrapping their bones in fresh cloth. 

Relatives also take time to ask their dead ancestors for blessings and things they might need in the world of the living. While this is not spooky, it is described by many travellers as more of a party with plenty of rum to go around. Some revellers dance to tunes from the accordion along with remains of the dead.

8. Toddler tossing in India

In some parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka, toddlers are tossed from the roof of temples 15-30 feet above the ground and are caught by a blanket held out by devotees. This practice is age old and is said to bring good luck to the child. It is a traumatic ordeal for the toddler and child rights activists managed to ban it in 2011. 

However, devotees continued to practise it in 2012.

9. Tooth Filing, Bali

While most of us file our nails, Balinese men and women have their teeth filed in preparation for marriage. Smoothed teeth are symbolic of control on sinful emotions like lust, greed, anger and jealousy. These mark of a passage into adulthood, and is an extremely gruelling and painful experience.

10.  Gerewol Festival

A pageantry of beauty and talent is something that has been used to evaluate a woman's worth since time immemorial. However, in the Wodaabe tribe, it's the men who have to be all prim and proper. The courtship festival known as Gerewol is where men dress up in all their finery and appear in front of the women to show them what they've got.

They take part in a dance competition called Yaake where the winners are chosen based on their overall good looks and dancing skills.

Meet Clark and Addison. Born on June 26, 2015, these two adorable red pandas can be seen at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. Native to the Himalayan mountain ranges of China, Nepal, India, Burma and Bhutan; Red Pandas are adept climbers and their diet consists of bamboo shoots and leaves.

From those two trees, these loud, yellow, bandit-masked birds would wake me up each day with their repeated shrieks of ‘ven te veo,’ ‘come, I see you’—the call that gives the great kiskadee its Uruguayan name. In Argentina, they hear the birds’ call as ‘bicho feo,’ ‘ugly bug,’ and so the great kiskadee carries that name there.”

It's been nearly two centuries after she died, and it's high time Bollywood dedicated a film to Jhalkari Bai. A woman of great valour and substance, she remains hidden in the pages of history books, as an unsung hero of India's freedom struggle. Let's dust those pages and tell you exactly why her life is a perfect storyboard for Bollywood. She was no less than characters like Jodhaa-Akbar, Bajirao-Mastani, Salim-Anarkali and Asoka. She was equally courageous, inspiring and an integral part of our history timelines. Read on to know why we yearn for a film on her.

1. Due to her uncanny resemblance, Jhalkari Bai acted as the 'body-double' of Rani Laxmibai against the British.

Little did we know Rani Laxmibai had a body-double who filled in for the queen and fought against the East India Company. Her strikingly similar appearance to Laxmibai helped the Jhansi army evolve a military strategy of deceiving the British. She disguised herself as Laxmibai and fought the invading British army in the first War of Independence, allowing the Queen to escape safely out of the fort. 

2. Jhalkari Bai's humble background is a lesser known chapter of colonial India.

Born into a poor family, Jhalkari started her career as an ordinary soldier in Laxmibai's army but rose to a position of advising the queen and participating in vital decisions. Jhalakari, with the other women, once went to the Jhansi fort to pay homage to the queen. That's when she was noticed by Laxmibai. The queen ordered brave Jhalkari's induction into the army, who was then trained in shooting and igniting the cannons as part of preparations to challenge the British intrusion.

3. Her selflessness towards her people was her biggest drawing point.  


Jhalkari once had an encounter with a tiger. She not only fought the beast bravely, but also killed it with a simple axe! On another occasion, she challenged a gang of dacoits who raided her village and forced them to retreat.

4. The courageous woman also had an important role during the battle of Jhansi. She stood like a pillar, protecting her motherland.

Laxmibai and Jhalkari Bai led the "Durga Dal" (women's army) recruits who foiled attacks by the British. She was at the forefront during the Revolt of 1857. If it weren't for betrayal by one of Laxmibai's generals, the Jhansi fort would have remained invincible for some more time.

5. Even after 186 years, the legend of Jhalkari Bai continues to pass on through generations as folklore in Bundelkhand.

Jhalkari was an ordinary village girl in Bundelkhand who would take care of household chores. Her life continues to be sung of in various Bundeli folklore. There is a popular saying about Jhalkari Bai in the region:

Macha Jhansi mein ghamasan, chahun aur machee kilkari thee,
Angrezon se loha lenein, ran mein kudee Jhalkari thee

(Translation: Amidst the sound and fury of the battle at Jhansi, Jhalkari plunged herself into the battlefield to confront the British.)

6. "Hang me" were her last words when the British troops captured her. 

After the British took over, officials asked what was to be done with her. Jhalkari firmly said, ''Hang me.'' She was barely 28 when she died. Years later, the Government of India would issue a postal stamp dedicated to the lady.

7. The statue of Jhalkari Bai in Gwalior stands as a symbol of her undying spirit. Her name has off late resurfaced on the socio-political landscape of North India as well.

Jhalkari Bai's bravery along with her identity as a Dalit has created a sense of pride and cultural unity in the Dalits of Uttar Pradesh. Her story has off-late surprised many historians, as it has offered a critique on social dominance imposed by Brahmanism and its followers at that time. Many believe our selective history has triggered significant motivation among Dalits to retrieve and bring to light the heroism and sacrifices of Jhalkari Bai for society. The movement demanding a separate state of Bundelkhand has also used her legend to create the Bundeli identity.

One man's delicacy could be another man's disaster on a platter, and that's what brings me to foods that could scare a genuinely hungry soul. Cooked in the most primitive of ways, the entire point of these dishes seem sadistic. And that's an understatement. 

1. Balut

Country of origin: Philippines

Sold as street food along the sidewalks of Manila, it is basically a fertilised and developing duck embryo that is boiled and then cracked open. Seasoned with garlic, chilli sauce and soy sauce, the albumen is often discarded for being too rubbery. The age of the egg before it can be cooked is a matter of local preference. In the Philippines, the ideal balut is 17 days old, at which point it is said to be balot sa puti ("wrapped in white"). The chick inside is not old enough to show its beak, feathers or claws, and the bones are undeveloped.

2. Feng Gan Ji

Country of Origin: China

Literally translated as 'wind dried chicken', this cooking method employs prison torture and creepy surgeries. Unconscious chickens have their intestines removed and replaced with a rich dose of herbs and spices. The stomach is sewed back up and the animals and hung upside down to die a slow and agonizing death. 

 

3. Foie Gras

Country of origin: France

This element of haute cuisine is a delicacy worldwide. But the fatty liver of duck and goose is prepared in the most cruelest of ways. The ducklings and goslings live a life of comfort until they become healthy adults. That's when hell begins.

Force fed buttery mixtures of corn feed by hose-like contraptions, they are restricted to small spaces where they can easily move or get any kind of exercise. This causes their livers to expand by 6 times their normal size. 

4. Unborn grilled lamb 

Country of origin: South America

A pregnant goat is char-grilled on an open fire until golden brown. The cook then cuts open the mother goat's abdomen and pulls out the unborn lamb who's meat is soft and tender.

5. Ikizukuri

Country of origin: Japan

Literally translated as 'cooked alive', the preparation of this dish is much like how a bear hunts for salmon, but with a flair of Japanese sophistication. The chef catches hold of a squirming live fish, slices it into fillets while still leaving the head, gills and heart alive. 

The diner can relish the fish gasping for air at the throes of death while pieces of its body lie neatly decorated like a jigsaw on the plate.

6. Ortolan

Country of origin: France

While eating pigeon, partridge and sparrow are common in some countries, rural Frenchmen have a fondness for a certain olive green and yellow bird called Ortolan. Blinded and fattened on a diet of figs, grapes and grains while still alive, the innocent songbird (maybe) is drowned in brandy or Armagnac. After a good soak, it is dry roasted.

Diners eat it feet first as this makes the head pop off. The highlight though, are the lungs of the bird, which when bitten releases sweet brandy into your soul. As part of all the fun, it is still eaten like it was in medieval times with napkins over the heads (and mouths) of the diners, as part of a belief of hiding one's gluttony from God.

7. Dojo Tofu

Country of origin: Japan

While blue cheese is injected with bacteria to create live cultures, the Japanese have a novel method of getting seafood into their tofu. Adding a slice of tofu along with some live baby eels or dojo loaches in a pan, boiling water is poured over. To escape the heat and the prospect of being boiled alive, the loaches make a beeline for the cool tofu. Water seeps into the tofu, it gets cooked and so do the loaches.

8. Chaprah

Country of origin: India

In three words: Red Ant Chutney. Eaten by the tribals of Chattisgarh, this is used as a condiment for traditional meals and is made of red ants and their eggs. After being dried out, the remains of the insects are mixed with spices and sweeteners. 

9. Cobra Heart and Blood Wine

Country of origin: Vietnam

Let Met near Hanoi is known as the 'village of snakes'. Before a meal, diners are expected to sacrifice a snake and have its fresh entrails as part of the meal. The most preferred choice here: Cobra.

An agitated cobra is lured out of its cage and quickly sliced at its belly. While the snake handler offers fresh blood into the diners' rice wine, the beating heart of the serpent is scooped out and offered as an appetizer.

in full mollusk shrug, shelves built for dated wreck
registers, cranial outbursts finely detailed, opening
at the outline of a spotlit ribcage, lists of thefts enter
micro-entry zones, respectability a possessive monster
needleteeth palms, langorous working in a front of
poured-in window light, off-white airshaft blue pushing
forward into the flatness of a room masquerading as
two wear out a corner, somnambulist soap performance
trickles along, black & white docu-film footage of
my fam’s thing-strewn space makes way into numbered
views, anyone may anonymously enter the screen
version of your interior & very few will, column
of skulls stands up a bulb socket, speed hump ahead
15 mph, minnows twig-hopping, playing pick up styx
in the hydroponic vape church fuming newness outs
of touch, & truth kicks back at a fool’s conception of
neutrality, thump thump, these kids need to stop falling
out of bed, ghost marooned on sock induces mock
shriek from the sub-aquatic generation I raise on stay
or no cookie, name of network: true, like & hurt go
hand in hand, the zebraic cosmologic selfie rides with
a drone stick, acktility expenses, tick trick carriers
careening into shape of snakes, sonar belts aura
saying activate instead of turn on, to radicalize a golden
tongue, dig the corpse & call it rotary possiblimity, we
just can’t help wiping the weird out of intelligence
