Somewhere in the Thar desert, resides India's most unique community, the Bishnois.
They are the followers of Guru Jambeshwar since the 15th century, abiding to his 29 principles. About 8 of those principals revolve around preserving and protecting the flora and fauna. As a part of keeping up to these important principles, the breastfeeding Bishnoi mothers can often be spotted feeding young fawns.
The Bishnois reside in the parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, and treat the animals like their own family. Causing damage to the environment is a sin to them. They are vegetarians and really value nature. Despite being Hindus, they perform burial rituals when someone dies, as they avoid burning trees and instead choose to decompose bodies to enhance the soil.
Interestingly, animals move freely in the fields of Bishnoi. And poaching is a big no in their community.
In 2013, Rajesh Bedi published a book titled Rajasthan: Under the Desert Sky and he mentioned Kiran Bishnoi breastfeeding a three-month-old fawn. She had fought off wild dogs that killed the fawn's mother, and rescued it. She brought the fawn home, named her Aarti, and breastfed her along with her own daughter, till she grew up. After that, the fawn was sent back into the wild.
