Taking advantage of someone else's misfortunes sounds evil, right? But as with all things, context is everything. Consequently, travelling to countries marred by financial troubles might be the best thing you can do to help them out. Tourism after all brings in foreign currency and helps sustain business. So travel, for the love of humanity, travel!
And now that we're all suitably guilt-free, take a look at travel destinations that are cheaper to travel to than they have ever been.
1. Greece
No country imbibes the terms 'collapsing economy' and 'perfect for a vacation' better than the beautiful and troubled country of Greece.
With hotel prices at their lowest, the birth place of democracy is calling out to you like never before. Pristine beaches, historical sites, mouth-watering cuisines, and stunning architecture are just some of the things to explore in Greece, for a steal!
2. Portugal
Traditionally one of the cheapest countries to visit in the Euro zone, Portugal's debt crisis has made it more alluring than ever before.
With its gorgeous beaches, picturesque towns, historic sites, fabulous cuisine and a pint of beer priced at roughly 100-rupees, you just cannot go wrong visiting Portugal!
3. Russia
Sanctions and declining oil prices = a weak Ruble = a perfect opportunity to explore the vast Russian landscape.
From the St. Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin in Moscow, to the ancient city of Suzdal, to taking a trip in the Trans-Siberian, there has never been a better time to explore the grandness of Russia. Moreover, Russia's famous Black Caviar is selling for half the price. So you've got your work cut out for you!
4. Ukraine
Annexation by Russia, looming debt, political chaos, and the Ukrainian Hryvnia fell to a historic low. Which basically means that a rupee can now get you more than it ever could.
Take a tour to a nuclear disaster site, soak in the sun on a white sand beach, party in the city of Odessa, or take selfies at absolutely breathtaking castles - oh wait, you take selfies everywhere - but you get the drift. Go to Ukraine! And specifically, go to a bar in Ukraine - you can get a vodka for $2!
5. Brazil
The longest recession in a century, the biggest bribery scandal in history, the impeachment of their president, and the Brazilian Real that's slumped to one of its lowest points in a decade - there's no time like now to visit Brazil.
And why should you go to Brazil for a vacation? With 1,500 beaches to choose from, 500 island paradises, the Amazon, the carnivals, the soccer games, the coffee, the culture, the food - you can get a meal for as little as Rs. 400 - and the upcoming Olympics, Brazil is the one place you should visit this year!
6. Argentina
With their economy as volatile as ever, and the Peso depreciating to the lowest it has been in a decade, Argentina is perfect for a vacation. Also, it's right next to Brazil!
Experience Buenos Aires, the capital and one of the world's most exhilarating cities. Make a fool of yourself by trying to tango, or simply watch very attractive people making it look easy. Go hiking in the Andes. Take a trip to Península Valdés, one of South America's finest wildlife reserves.
7. South Africa
South African Rand has halved in value in the past five years, and the country is fast becoming the adventure capital of the world. So there you go, go for an adventure.
Go on a safari, Kayak with crocodiles, do the world's tallest rope swing, bungee jump off a bridge, cage dive with sharks, ride an ostrich. (Wait, what, an ostrich? Yup, you can ride those sneaky long-legged fellows). Weird, I know.
8. Zimbabwe
The Zimbabwean economy, mostly infamous for its collapse a decade or so ago when the government was printing hundred billion dollar notes (yes, that bad), is in a deep hole yet again. Wracked by drought, deflation and falling world commodity prices, the country is desperate for tourists.
Go on an African safari, check out the mighty Victoria falls, go fishing in the Zambezi river, and you'd have ticked off the African experience off your bucket list!
