National Poetry Month Poster Contest
Dear Teachers,
This year, for the first time ever, the Academy of American Poets invites students in grades 9 through 12 to submit designs for the 2019 National Poetry Month Poster Contest, which will be judged by award-winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye and renowned graphic designer Debbie Millman. We hope that you will encourage your students to submit!
The guidelines and eligibility requirements for the 2019 National Poetry Month Poster Contest are now available on Poets.org. (Please note that all submitted designs must incorporate one of five provided excerpts from poems by U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith.) We will be accepting submissions from September 1 to October 31, 2018. The winning student will be featured on Poets.org and in American Poets magazine and will receive a signed book by Naomi Shihab Nye and a $500 prize. In April 2019, the poster featuring the winning design will be sent to 100,000 libraries, schools, bookstores, and community centers nationwide.
We also are pleased to announce the On Teaching Poem Prize, a contest given in partnership with the Academy of Teachers. This $1,000 prize honors the best unpublished poem about K–12 teaching and/or teachers, and it is open to everyone—you included! Submissions will be accepted from October 1, 2018, through January 1, 2019, and the judge this year will be Academy of American Poets Education Ambassador Richard Blanco.
We're excited for these opportunities to see your and your students' creativity in action. Thank you, as always, for all that you do!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Benka
