Łčíčšeʔ

Heather Cahoon
"Łčíčšeʔ" by Heather Cahoon

About this Poem

"This poem describes the body's response to trauma, which is one of many related themes explored in more detail in my forthcoming collection of poems Horsefly Dress, named for the only daughter of Coyote, an important figure in my tribe's oral traditions. The poems—including 'Łčíčšeʔ', which means older sister—deal with issues stemming from Coyote's transformation of the world and his decision to leave present certain 'evils' including cruelty, greed, hunger, death, etc. In more specific terms, these topics are explored through first-person experiences and the experiences of my family and larger tribal community."
Heather Cahoon

Heather Cahoon's first collection of poems, Horsefly Dress, is forthcoming from the University of Arizona Press in the fall of 2020. She is an Assistant Professor of Native American Studies at the University of Montana and lives in Missoula.

If You're Going to Look Like a Wolf They Have to Love You More Than They Fear You.

Abigail Chabitnoy
"If You’re Going To Look Like A Wolf They Have To Love You More Than They Fear You." by Abigail Chabitnoy

About this Poem

"I wrote this poem early into a month-long residency at Caldera in Oregon. I'd been reading a mix of news, feminist texts, Alutiiq lore, and Barry Lopez's Of Wolves & Men, and was trying to find a way to bring these varied ways of knowing into conversation with each other and with the current social, political, and environmental crises dominating my newsfeeds. I wanted to capture the direness of the situation we're in and the need for new solutions rooted in traditional knowledge and marginalized voices, but it was also important for me that the poem maintain an air of defiance, of hope—of resilience. I want my poems to envision a path forward, not sink in overwhelming defeatism."
Abigail Chabitnoy

Abigail Chabitnoy is the author of How to Dress a Fish (Wesleyan University Press, 2019). She is a research associate for a consulting company focused on supporting tribal self-determination efforts and currently lives in Denver, Colorado.

Countdown as Slow Kisses

Michael Wasson
"Countdown as Slow Kisses" by Michael Wasson

About this Poem

"We are given these bodies—full of beauty, ache, and history—and are told to survive. We lean into joy and marvel, into our living, and yet we know that what we desire ultimately devours us. Might we surrender as we climax toward our gorgeous, unbearable ruin? This poem says yes."
Michael Wasson

Michael Wasson is the author of Swallowed Light (Copper Canyon Press, 2021). He is from the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho.
