There was a bush with scarlet berries,
   And there were hemlocks heaped with snow,
With a sound like surf on long sea-beaches
   They took the wind and let it go.

The hills were shining in their samite,
   Fold after fold they flowed away;
"Let come what may," your eyes were saying,

1. Hanging by Flesh at Sun Dance Festival

 
Look Ma, I got into Sun Dance!
 
We sometimes think of Native Americans as gentile, peace-loving souls. However, the Sun Dance ritual practiced by some Plains Indian tribes could get pretty gory. The 8 day ritual centered around death and rebirth. Sun Dancers would fast for days, and men would be skewered through their skin, representing the tree of life. The true pain and gore comes with the fact that they would slowly lean back until the skewers would rip through. The ritual was banned in the US in 1904, but is legal today.
 
2. Bullet Ant Glove Initiation

 
Think you've got what it takes to be a man? Try going through what the young men from the Satere-Mawe tribe of Brazil do. Young men must place their hands inside gloves that have bullet ants sewn into the fingers. The pain one feels from this ant is akin to being shot (hence the name) and the boys must not show signs of agony for 20 minutes, while other members of the tribe sing and dance around them. If that weren't bad enough – they must repeat this ritual 20 more times.
 
3. Hindu Thaipusam Festival Piercings

 
The Hindus celebrate their devotion to the birth of Lord Murugan and his killing of Soorapadman, a vengeful spirit, with a spear. They do this with painful piercings around the body, including the tongue. Over time, the rituals have become more dramatic, colorful, and bloody, with large spears and hooks through the chest and face – some devotees even pull large wagons with ropes attached to their bloody backs.
 
4. Matasu Tongue Stabbings

 
Stick out your tongue and say AHHHHH!!!!!
 
This gory ritual from Papua, New Guinea revolves around ridding the male Matsu of their "female influences" so they can become men. They do this by sliding wooden canes down their throats and reeds into their noses to induce vomiting. Then their tongues are repeatedly stabbed.
 
5. Filipino Crucifixion

 
You don't think that Roman Catholics have their share of gory festivals? Check out these Filipinos, who re-enact the painful crucifixion of Jesus Christ every Good Friday by getting nailed… to the cross that is. Men and women have both endured this bloody ritual, which is also accompanied by dozens of barefoot men who whip themselves, causing the streets to literally run with blood.
 
6. Buddhist Self-Mummification Ritual

 
This is perhaps the slowest, most painful, and goriest of them all – turning yourself into a mummy. The process was known as Sokushinbutsu. Over a three year period, monks would slowly starve themselves, eating nothing but nuts and seeds to eliminate body fat. Then, they ate wood and drank a poisonous tea for another three years, until they were barely alive. They were then buried in a tomb, with a little bell attached, which they would periodically ring until, of course, they finally died. This was thought to have been only a legend, until the mummies were discovered in 2010.

1. Suspension Wedding

 
These are photos from PiercedSmurf's suspension wedding on April 20, 2007 in New Orleans. They're sharing their love for each other and for body modification.
 
2. T.J. Maxx Wedding

 
Lisa Satayut's dream was to get married in the size 8 shoe aisle at T.J. Maxx for as long as she could remember. Calling it her "happy place," the "Maxxinista" and her fiance, Drew Ellis, were married while the Mt. Pleasant, Michigan store was still open for business.
 
3. Zero Gravity Wedding

 
The bride wore white and earrings resembling tiny planets, the groom wore a tuxedo and cuff links shaped like spacecraft, and the wedding party attended in blue jumpsuits. New York City couple Erin Finnegan and Noah Fulmor floated into matrimony thousands of meters above the Gulf of Mexico in what organizers said was the world's first zero gravity wedding.
 
The couple exchanged wedding vows and rings – with some difficulty – and fumbled their kiss while flying weightless inside the padded fuselage of a specially modified Boeing 727-200 aircraft, G-Force One, operated by ZERO-G, a company offering weightless flight experiences.
 
4. Largest Underwater Wedding

 
Two hundred and sixty one divers took the plunge to achieve the largest underwater wedding on record. Francesca Colombi and Giampiero Giannoccaro's marriage ceremony took place underwater at Morcone Beach, Capoliveri, Elba Island, Italy, on June 12, 2010.
 
5. Rappelling Wedding

 
These newlyweds are joining the mile high club ... in front of all their family and friends. Jiang Dezhang (R), 27, kisses his bride Tie Guangju, 26, while rappelling from a building during their wedding ceremony in Kunming, China.
 
These two lovebirds both work as exterior cleaners of tall buildings, so they decided to incorporate rappelling into their ceremony. Sure, because they don't get enough of that on regular days.
 
6. Roller Skating Wedding

 
Who says that wedding gowns have to be white and traditional? Check out these fantastic photos of Liz and Dave's roller skating-themed wedding by photographer Michelle Hayes.
 
7. Glacier Wedding

 
A bride and groom say "I do" on a frozen glacier just outside of Juneau, Alaska. Temperatures on the glacier are usually only about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than on land. We hope it leads to a warm marriage. (Courtesy of Diane Pearson)
 
8. Hot Air Balloon Wedding

 
Mike Kijak has been flying hot air balloons through California's Sonoma Valley for 15 years. Though the wedding party is limited to eight, the sky is the limit for hot air balloon weddings at Up and Away in Sonoma Valley. Owner Mike Kijak, center, pilots the balloon and performs the ceremony. "You would hear about it," he said of hot air balloon weddings. "It's marriage proposals we'd see a lot of. Then one day someone asked, 'Can you marry us?' and I thought, 'Sure, why not?'" So, Kijak looked into it and can now legally marry couples in the state of California. Of course, he's also flying the balloon, so ceremonies stay relatively simple.
 
9. Rainy Wedding

 
There are those who believe that a rainy wedding means good luck for the happy couple. If this is true, then Hernelie Ruazol and Ram Campo are in for a blessed marriage indeed—it didn't just rain on their wedding, it poured and even flooded.
 
The couple's sopping-wet wedding became Internet-famous as a post-nup photo of them kissing in ankle-deep flood water in their wedding garb made romantics swoon. The couple tied the knot inside the flooded San Antonio de Padua Parish Church in Singalong, Manila, at the height of the monsoon rains.
 
In the days leading up to the ceremony, the bride, a teacher at Epifanio de los Santos Elementary School, had begged the weather for a break on her special day. Obviously, the skies did not heed her appeals, but ultimately, Hernalie and Ram didn't seem to mind. On the day of the wedding, the couple's spirits seemed as relentless as the rain.
 
Their vow of "for better or worse" was tested much earlier than expected. Kissing in a rainy deluge, Hernelie and Ram appeared able to endure any future storms in their marriage.

Remembered Light
by Clark Ashton Smith
 

The years are a falling of snow,
Slow, but without cessation,
On hills and mountains and flowers and worlds that were;
But snow and the crawling night in which it fell
May be washed away in one swifter hour of flame.
Thus it was that some slant of sunset
In the chasms of piled cloud--
Transient mountains that made a new horizon,
Uplifting the west to fantastic pinnacles-
Smote warm in a buried realm of the spirit,
Till the snows of forgetfulness were gone.

Clear in the vistas of memory,
The peaks of a world long unremembered,
Soared further than clouds, but fell not,
Based on hills that shook not nor melted
With that burden enormous, hardly to be believed.
Rent with stupendous chasms,
Full of an umber twilight,
I beheld that larger world.

Bright was the twilight, sharp like ethereal wine
Above, but low in the clefts it thickened,
Dull as with duskier tincture.
