What Sylvia Plath Loved

Today is the 50th anniversary of Sylvia Plath's death. To honor her life and work we've compiled a list of ten things Plath loved and wrote about in her letters, journals, and poems. Among these things are the Ouija board and Marilyn Monroe. Find out about her other loves and obsessions in this new piece on Poets.org.

Take a look at Plath's correspondace
with the Academy, beginning with when she was a young poet:

Video Exclusive: "Who was the first poet you fell in love with?"

We asked a few poets at the Academy's 2012 Poets Forum about love, in line breaks and on the page. Marilyn Hacker, Edward Hirsch, Evie Shockley, Jean Valentine, and others, share personal stories about the first poets they fell in love with and where they encountered them.

New Lesson Plan: Love
as a Two-Way Street

In this new lesson plan, students focus on poems about love--including works by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, and George Oppen.

What is love? How has it influenced the history of verse? Explore this complicated and universal emotion with the help of poets, the self-proclaimed experts of the domain of Eros.

This lesson plan is aligned with Common Core standards and has been prepared by a curriculum specialist.

A Special Request for Teachers

Over the last six months, as part of our work to support educators, we have offered poetry lesson plans in these monthly newsletters. Please take a moment to let us know what other kinds of resources might help you bring poetry to your students. Your responses to this short survey will help guide our efforts. Thank You!
