Irina Shayk "Dynamite" Spring 2013 Campaign

Dreams have always intrigued us since time immemorial. It is also said there were specific dream interpreters in the courts of kings in early civilizations. However, in the 1800s the father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud and subsequently, his successor Carl Jung, revolutionized the world of dreams. Since then a lot has been studied in this field but dreams astound us with varied meanings and interpretations every time we witness them.

Some of the most interesting facts about dreams in the trailing paragraphs are sure to take one by surprise.

1. While dreaming we become temporarily paralyzed

Not many of us are aware that we become temporarily paralyzed in the dream state. This can be attributed to the fact that sometimes we may be so moved with certain dramatic dreams as to fall and hurt ourselves, thus, as a natural response the body goes into a temporary inactive state physically.

2. We can control our dreams

In what is known as a "Lucid dreaming" phase one can control their dreams. Thus, one can also manipulate their dreams and even the outcomes! Another interesting fact is that one dreams things one has witnessed some time before in their life.

3. Dreams can cause incorporation

How often have we dreamt we were hungry or thirsty or performing an act repeatedly in our sleep until we wake up and undertake the activity? Sometimes one could dream of drinking glasses of water only to wake up and be very thirsty!

4. Dreams speak in indirect language

Dreams never utilize symbols they actually stand for. A lot of research has already gone into the subject and books have been written on dream symbols and their interpretations. Dreams carry deep meanings that only the subconscious mind can understand.

5. Dreams are very difficult to remember

Often when we wake up we fail to remember even a single sequence of the dream we had during the night. A strange fact remains therefore, that dreams are almost always forgotten, except if a person is woken up at the REM stage.

6. We tend to dream of forbidden things

Another startling fact about dreams is the frequent instance of dreaming things one is forbidden to do. A person who is forbidden to eat chocolates may dream of gorging greedily on them. Even medical conditions and psychological disorders may have a direct effect on dreams!

7. Some people only dream in black and white

Some people dream only in black and white while about 70% of people dream in colors. Certain dreams are very common to some people such as, failing an exam, getting up late for the exam, dreams related to one's school, seeing a person dead who is alive in real life, being chased by someone etc. Studies are being conducted in the relevance of colors and repeated sequences in dreams.

8. Disturbed sleep may lead to psychosis

Sleeping and dreaming which occur in the REM stage are very important for healthy living. In a research conducted involving students who were woken up at the start of their REM stage, it was noted the students became irritable, hallucinated a lot, were affected by psychosis and were finally disinterested in everything they did. Thus a good night's sleep combined with regular dreaming is our body's way of staying fit too!

9. Visually impaired people dream too

Very interestingly, people who are born blind only witness dreams involving smell, sound or touch, while people who go blind after birth are seen to witness regular dreams just like their counterparts with vision.

10. And so do animals

Studies have revealed animals and more specifically mammals dream exactly the way humans do! So even your household pet may be dreaming all night without your knowing about it.
11. Children have more nightmares than adults

It is widely studied that children have more nightmares than adults.

12. Some great inventions were first conceived during sleep

Although we tend to forget about 90% of our dreams once we wake up, many great scientists have made discoveries in their dreams and written them down the moment they woke up. Newton, Graham Bell and even some poets have received their inspirations from dreams.

"Hate is an invisible chain."
When you don't let go of hate, you let the thing or person you hate maintain control over you. You allow the hatred to keep the channels of negative energy open, sucking out positive emotions and holding you back from true happiness.
Cut off the hate and move on! When you cleanse your mind and soul of grudges and negative thoughts, you make new room for positive emotions and joy. Take a moment today to consciously let go of all hatred. Savor the new energy that you'll feel bursting through to take its place!

THE FINER POINTS OF POSITIVE MOTIVATION

One wife waited patiently, then impatiently, for her husband to repair the lawn mower as he had promised. One day, not wanting to confront him in anger, she tried another tack. That was the day he came home and found her seated on the ground snipping grass with sewing scissors, one blade at a time. He watched in absolute amazement. Then he went into the house and returned with a toothbrush. "Honey," he said, "when you finish cutting the grass would you mind sweeping the sidewalks?"

They both laughed. And, more importantly, he turned his attention to the mower.

We've all been there. We want to encourage a child to do her homework, or a spouse to complete a project, or a colleague to follow through. How can we encourage without criticizing, nagging, berating or pushing?

Maybe because I'm the one that occasionally has to be nudged, I've learned a few important things about the finer points of positive motivation.

First, whenever possible, try to keep it light-hearted. The careful use of humor can work in any relationship to make the point in a way it will be heard. Sometimes we are so frustrated we know that however we say it, it will be bound to come out wrong. These are especially the times when humor may be needed.

Second, without exception, be polite and respectful. Sometimes it's more about how we say it than what we say. Too much of the world is run on the theory that you don't need road manners if you drive a five-ton truck. No one wants to be forced, pushed, run over, cajoled or manipulated. They want to be respected.

Finally, as often as you can, show appreciation. Novelist Arnold Bennett had a publisher who boasted about the consistently exceptional work of his assistant. One day while visiting the publisher's office, Bennett struck up a conversation with the valued employee. He told her what her boss said about her work. "What's your secret?" he asked.

"It's not my secret," said the assistant, "it's his." She went on to tell him that her boss always acknowledges and appreciates everything she does, regardless how insignificant. That is why she finds it so easy to take pride in her work. The appreciation of her employer nudges her toward constant improvement.

These are a few of the finer points of positive motivation. And even if motivating is not your purpose, respect and appreciation, topped off with a little humor is bound to improve any relationship.

Steve Goodier

Now and later
You don't have to sacrifice present joy and richness for future value, and you don't have to compromise your future to enjoy right now. You can choose to live richly and joyfully in the present while also being positively responsible for your future.
Sure there are momentary pleasures that will have a negative impact on your future. Yet you can fully enjoy this moment without resorting to those empty, fleeting pleasures.
Yes, there are responsibilities you must tend to right now in order to create a more positive future. But there's no need to feel burdened or oppressed by them.
In fact, one of the best ways to enjoy the present moment is by being productive and creative and focused on a meaningful positive purpose. Instead of filling your moments with shallow pleasures that will soon be gone, you can fill your life with deep, profound joy that will continue to grow stronger.
Being disciplined and responsible toward your own future is not really a sacrifice at all. When you continue to remind yourself of the value of what you're doing, it is a constant source of satisfaction and abiding richness.
Make the choices that will enrich your future while also drinking in every bit of the richness of right now. Live with authentic positive presence and purpose, and you can have it all.
 Ralph Marston

Help spread the power of poetry

Posted: 23 Apr 2013 06:18 AM PDT

Dear Friend,

During National Poetry Month, inevitably someone will ask whether the art of poetry still matters. We're grateful to have friends like you who know, resoundingly, that it does.

Poems illuminate truths about ourselves on personal and global scales. Poems provide the words we seek to understand significant events. Poems comfort and console.

Our nation's young people need what poetry can provide--an opportunity to reflect on how the words we use matter, and an invitation to empathize with others.

As a teen poet wrote in a letter submitted as part of our Dear Poet Project this month:

"I truly believe the power of our craft lies in its ability to reach all people by making the very emotions that make us human relatable, oftentimes in surprising and provocative ways."

With support from friends like you, for nearly 50 years, the Academy of American Poets has worked to nurture the next generation of poets and their readers, ensuring that poetry and its unique contributions to our culture continue to be celebrated. In 1966, we launched the first Poets-in-the-Schools program. Thirty years later we launched the Online Poetry Classroom at Poets.org, which continues to assist teachers today.

This April, we are raising funds to enable us offer additional educational activities and online resources geared toward young people. Thank you for helping make that possible.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Benka

Poem-A-Day: Spent by Mark Doty

Posted: 23 Apr 2013 03:35 AM PDT

Spent
by Mark Doty

Late August morning I go out to cut
spent and faded hydrangeas--washed
greens, russets, troubled little auras

of sky as if these were the very silks
of Versailles, mottled by rain and ruin
then half-restored, after all this time...

When I come back with my handful
I realize I've accidentally locked the door,
and can't get back into the house.

The dining room window's easiest;
crawl through beauty bush and spirea,
push aside some errant maples, take down

the wood-framed screen, hoist myself up.
But how, exactly, to clamber across the sill
and the radiator down to the tile?

I try bending one leg in, but I don't fold
readily; I push myself up so that my waist
rests against the sill, and lean forward,

place my hands on the floor and begin to slide
down into the room, which makes me think
this was what it was like to be born:

awkward, too big for the passageway...
Negotiate, submit?
                          When I give myself
to gravity there I am, inside, no harm,

the dazzling splotchy flowerheads
scattered around me on the floor.
Will leaving the world be the same

--uncertainty as to how to proceed,
some discomfort, and suddenly you're
--where? I am so involved with this idea

I forget to unlock the door,
so when I go to fetch the mail, I'm locked out
again. Am I at home in this house,

would I prefer to be out here,
where I could be almost anyone?
This time it's simpler: the window-frame,

the radiator, my descent. Born twice
in one day!
                In their silvered jug,
these bruise-blessed flowers:

how hard I had to work to bring them
into this room. When I say spent,
I don't mean they have no further coin.

If there are lives to come, I think
they might be a littler easier than this one.

About this Poem:

"One day last summer I locked myself out of the house twice; wriggling through a window and down onto the floor, I had the odd sensation that it might have felt something like that to be born. The poem began as pure narration, and it took me many drafts to start teasing out its deeper implications. This time it felt right just to suggest them, and leave them hanging in the air a bit, reverberating...I think this is the pattern of a life, in a way, to be born and spent and born again."

Daily Inspiration - Daily Quote ... Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Insights for living with joy and purpose

Dear Ferry Meed

Any idea, plan, or purpose
{whether noble or evil - jlh}
may be placed in the mind through repetition of thought.
- Napoleon Hill

It's the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief.
And once that belief becomes a deep conviction,
things begin to happen.
- Muhammad Ali

Repeat anything often enough
and it will start to become you.
- Tom Hopkins

As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth,
so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind.
To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again.
To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over
the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.
- Henry David Thoreau

Life repeats itself mindlessly -
unless you become mindful, it will go on repeating like a wheel.
- Osho

[AffirmationstoDe-Stress] MORNING COFFEE RESEND

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 06:55 PM PDT

"Take time to be grateful."
Taking the time every day to recognize what you're grateful for helps keep things in perspective. Gratitude carries you through the tough times, and gives you the strength to surpass the stress of challenges.
Reflect on your family, your friends or the place where you live, and the satisfaction they bring you. Think about your good health and your mental or physical talents. Consider the pleasure you received from a phone call with a friend or a laugh you shared with your children.
Look back on small and large moments – the affection of a pet, your success in the garden or a deep and fulfilling partnership. These are all things that nourish gratitude. And, gratitude makes life worth living!
©Jane Powell

TAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF!
Everyone's life is their own making and, as such, they have developed their own belief system, have their own expectations, and carry around their own baggage. With all of this, there is no way that any one person can accurately compare themselves to another person and expect to obtain a reasonable result.
Stop comparing yourself to others as everyone is different. Stop diminishing yourself with negative judgments by always finding that you are less than anyone else in any particular way. We're not more or less --- we're all just different.
When you make a mistake or dont progress the way youd like, its easy to give up or to tell yourself that you cant do it. During times of personal change and growth, its important to take it easy on yourself and treat yourself with care and respect. Its important to give yourself an extra little push sometimes, but not through personal mental beatings.
Remind yourself of what your strengths are. Review your values and motivations for creating the goal in the first place. Look back at all your successes and tell yourself that it may take some time, but you can do it. However, the only way youll achieve any goal is to do it!
Lighten up! If you take yourself too seriously as you carry out your goals, youll have no fun pursuing them and everyone around you will be overly cautious of you and your actions. Manage your expectations and keep them realistic! Instead of trying to conquer the world in one shot, break it up and just conquer your own little piece of it first. Then, once you have control, expand your reach a bit. By keeping your goals small and incremental, mixed with a light-hearted perspective, you will be able to get through the challenges to reach your ultimate Vision.
Edward B. Toupin

Achievement is in you

Achievement is in you. Let it flow out into your world.
Your dream is beautiful. Let it compel you to bring it to life.
You are highly skilled at making things happen. So choose to take the best things you can imagine, and to make them real.
This day will come and go, whether you do anything with it or not. So decide right now to do every good thing you can imagine with it while it is here.
Don't be ashamed that your dream is too big or too small or too quirky or too difficult to explain. Just get busy with that authentic dream, and find great delight and fulfillment in making it happen.
There is beautiful, valuable, unique achievement in you, longing to be expressed. Make this the moment you give in to that longing, and make your whole world a more wonderful place.
Ralph Marston

[Fropki] Strangest Buses

People Are Awesome Beyond our Imagination

Created by car artist Tom Kennedy, the Topsy-Turvy Bus (Topsy) is a bus made of two school buses welded together, one upside down on top of the other. This cool bus is currently touring the country to "dramatically depict America's upside down budget priorities."

The World's Longest Bus is made in China, costs USD 250,000, and it only works in cities without corners, The other way would be to drive from one block to another without turning. This 83 foot long bus has a capacity of 300 people and is divided into 3 compartments, due to this its speed limit is up to 51mph max, probably to avoid any unwanted incident, but then with that kind of speed this bus would cause traffic jam that might clog up the city.
NOTE: our reader Barbara explains: "this bi-articulated bus was first seen in Brazil, and here it is just a little shorter, about 82ft long with capacity for 270 passengers." --thank you!

What do you get when you cross a bus with a train? The Bus Train, a dual-mode vehicle that has the versatility of a bus, the speed of light rail and fuel economy vastly better than either.

The Cat Bus

The Boat Bus, a british bus capable of surfing the Thames.
NOTE: Our reader Aaron explains: "The 'Boat Bus' (...) isn't a bus at all. It's a Duck Boat -- an Amphibious Vehicle created during WWII to transport soldiers from the sea onto land. Major cities (including Boston, MA) have 'Duck Tours' that take you around the city in the Duck Boats, and then bring you into the water" --thank you!
