John Ashbery Picks Whitman Award Winner!

The Academy of American Poets is pleased to announce that Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Ashbery has selected Chris Hosea as the recipient of the 2013 Walt Whitman Award, the Academy's prestigious first book prize. 

 

As the winner of the Whitman Award,
Hosea's manuscript, 
Put Your Hands In, will be published by Louisiana State University Press in 2014 and the Academy of American Poets will purchase and distribute thousands of copies of the book to its members. Hosea will also receive $5,000 and a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center. 
 
Mario Batali, Patricia Clarkson, Glen 
Hansard, Stew, Kathleen Turner, and other leading artists, scholars, and public figures will come together on one stage on April 17, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. for an extraordinary evening celebrating the role of contemporary poetry in American culture. 

Poetry & the Creative Mind helps raise critical funds for the Academy's annual programs, including National Poetry Month. 

Tickets for Poetry & the Creative Mind are now available through the Lincoln Center box office
 
National Student Poets
America's inaugural class of National Student Poets, five teenagers who serve as literary ambassadors for poetry, are sharing their passion nationwide this April.
 
All five students are participating in events and workshops throughout the United States. In fact, NYC student poet Claire Lee will be reading poetry on the Lincoln Center stage as part of our Poetry & the Creative Mind lineup this April 17.

We were saddened to learn that former Academy of American Poets Chancellor Daniel Hoffman passed away on March 30, 2013, a few days shy of his 90th birthday. Hoffman wrote numerous books of poetry and served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (now called U.S. Poet Laureate) from 1973 to 1974
