Dear Friend, This April, hundreds of students across the United States have written inspired letters to the distinguished poets who serve on the Academy's Board of Chancellors. This special project, "Dear Poet," was made possible by the generous support of our donors. If you haven't contributed to our educational programs, we hope that you will. While letters are still pouring in, we wanted to share a few of the students' thoughts about the power of poetry:
"Poetry has become an exceptional part of my life... I have realized that poets are epicures of the English language." -- Chelsei, a high school senior from Florida
"(Poets) put into words what I had never been able to adequately articulate. That is the power of writing." -- Lylla, a high school junior from New Mexico
"Living in a small town doesn't lead to much exposure and my fellow poets and I often find ourselves seeking out poems in unusual places. But the work that the Chancellors and the many other poets out there are doing is giving students like me an opportunity to experience this world through a different lens, and I thank you for that." -- Alex, a high school freshman from northern Michigan
Chelsei, Lylla, and Alex remind us that the art of poetry can impact young people in profound ways. It helps them name what they've felt was unnameable. It provides different and expansive visions of the world. Poetry sparks their creativity, and cultivates a deep and meaningful appreciation for language.
We thank you for your appreciation of poetry, and for assisting us in sharing this important art form with generations to come.
Sincerely,
Michael Jacobs Vice Chairman, Board of Directors
