[AffirmationstoDe-Stress] MORNING COFFEE

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 03:42 AM PDT

"Decisions require your instinct and intuition."
When you're faced with a decision, your instinct and intuition are just as important as experience. Trusting your intuition allows you to recognize and seize opportunities more quickly than those who waste time and momentum examining every angle. Your intuition also keeps decisions from becoming overwhelming.
Think of a situation when you ignored your "gut feeling." It may have been when you hired someone, dealings with clients or even trusting a friend. Whatever it may be, you probably learned a valuable lesson about intuition at one time or another.
Remember, with every opportunity there is a right moment to take action toward a certain purpose. Trust your intuition and be ready to capture the moment. You won't be let down.
©Jane Powell

Problems? No Problem
"You're having problems? No problem." That's what I try to tell myself when I begin to feel overwhelmed. And then I remind myself that the only people I am aware of who don't have troubles are gathered in peaceful, little neighborhoods. There is never a care, never a moment of stress and never an obstacle to ruin a day. All is calm. All is serene. Most towns have at least one such worry-free zone. We call them cemeteries.
But if you're still breathing, you have difficulties. It's the way of life. And believe it or not, most of your problems may actually be better for you than you think. Let me explain.
Maybe you have seen the Great Barrier Reef, stretching some 1,800 miles from New Guinea to Australia. Tour guides regularly take visitors to view the reef. On one tour, the guide was asked an interesting question. "I notice that the lagoon side of the reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is vibrant and colorful," a traveler observed. "Why is this?"
The guide gave an interesting answer: "The coral around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves, storms – surges of power. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces." Then he added this telling note: "That's the way it is with every living organism."
That's how it is with people. Challenged and tested, we come alive. Like coral pounded by the sea, we grow. Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger. Mental and emotional stress can produce tough-mindedness and resiliency. Spiritual testing can produce strength of character and faithfulness.
So, you have problems – no problem. Just tell yourself, "There I grow again!"
 Steve Goodier

Worthless excuses
If you feel the need to make an excuse, see it as a very clear indication that something is wrong. Instead of offering excuses, take the opportunity to make improvements.
Excuses don't solve problems, and excuses don't get the job done. Rather than working to craft a good excuse, your best option is to work on making things right.
Excuses are easy, and worth very little. Purposeful, focused, persistent effort is what will really make a difference.
Don't be concerned with merely saving face. Get to work on getting the job done.
Sure, the challenges you face are real and noteworthy. Yet the truly important thing is working through those challenges and creating the value you've committed yourself to create.
See the situation not as a reason to make an excuse, but as your chance to make a difference. Forget the excuses, and focus on living life's great opportunities.
 Ralph Marston

Poem-A-Day: Only a Dad by Edgar Guest

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 03:31 AM PDT

October 12, 2013
Only a Dad

Only a dad with a tired face,

Coming home from the daily race,

Bringing little of gold or fame,

To show how well he has played the game,

But glad in his heart that his own rejoice

To see him come and to hear his voice.

Only a dad with a brood of four,

One of ten million men or more.

Plodding along in the daily strife,

Bearing the whips and the scorns of life,

With never a whimper of pain or hate,

For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,

Merely one of the surging crowd

Toiling, striving from day to day,

Facing whatever may come his way,

Silent, whenever the harsh condemn,

And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad but he gives his all

To smooth the way for his children small,

Doing, with courage stern and grim,

The deeds that his father did for him.

This is the line that for him I pen:

Only a dad, but the best of men.

Today's poem is in the public domain.

About This Poem
Guest has been called "the poet of the people." Most often his poems were fourteen lines long and presented a deeply sentimental view of everyday life. When his father died, Guest was forced to drop out of high school and work full time at the Detroit Free Press, eventually considering himself "a newspaper man who wrote verses." Of his poetry he said, "I take simple everyday things that happen to me and I figure it happens to a lot of other people and I make simple rhymes out of them."
Poetry by Guest

Poem-A-Day
Launched during National Poetry Month in 2006, Poem-A-Day features new and previously unpublished poems by contemporary poets on weekdays and classic poems on weekends. Browse the Poem-A-Day Archive.

Edgar Guest, an English-born American poet, was born in 1881. In 1895, he was hired as a copy boy for the Detroit Free Press, where he would work for almost sixty-five years. In his lifetime, he published more than twenty volumes of poetry and was thought to have written over 11,000 poems. Guest died on August 5, 1959.

[Fropki] Why Charity is Important

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 12:28 AM PDT

In today's materialistic society, charity is often seen as low priority. However the reality is that the community we live in has a huge influence on us personally it fosters safety, responsibility and sustainability so it is important that we take our community seriously for the greater good of humanity and for our own personal benefit.

Most importantly though, you'll gain an appreciation for what REALLY matters and it's not fame or fortune!

After-all, there are many high-profiled people who are great believers in charity and the planet. Bill Gates donates millions of dollars to charities, Bob Geldoff and U2's Bono are great crusaders against world poverty, and many other celebrities offer money and their time to a variety of causes.

Yes, these people have the money to give and their image has done pretty well out of their endeavours but at the heart of their generosity is the genuine desire to make a difference. And they do.

But, you don't need lots of money or fame to contribute to the community we all can.

It is my honest belief that we should all help those less fortunate than ourselves and trust me, if you have the resources to be able to read this article on-line, then there are lots of people out there who are less fortunate!

Whether this help is financial through appropriate donations or through donating your time as a volunteer doesn't really matter, but we should all feel some social responsibility to do something.

Everyone can do something. YOU can do something. If you don't have the time, DONATE. If you can't afford to donate money, VOLUNTEER and offer your time or services.

Making Donations

As a general guide, aim to donate 10% of your income to charity. You may have heard the phrase, "Charity starts at home" so make sure your budget can afford it!

Pick a cause that you believe in the most. All charities are worthwhile, but which ones are YOU passionate about? Go help them, help them on weekly or monthly basis.

Insights for living with joy and purpose

Dear Ferry Meed

The ultimate test of a man's conscience
may be his willingness to sacrifice something today
for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.
- Gaylord Nelson

Life is no brief candle to me.
It is a sort of splendid torch
which I have got a hold of for the moment,
and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible
before handing it on to future generations.
- George Bernard Shaw

The full measure of a man is
not to be found in the man himself,
but in the colors and textures that
come alive in others because of him.
- Albert Schweitzer

The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world,
who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by.
- Felix Adler

What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us;
what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.
- Albert Pike

Civilization is not a spontaneous generation
with any race or nation known to history,
but the torch to be handed down from race to race from age to age.
- Kelly Millar

I expect to pass through this world but once.
Any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show to my fellow-creature,
let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.
- William Penn

Mark Weber has spent more than 30 years photographing the streets of New York. Although most of his photos deal with the darker side of life in the Big Apple, like poverty, violence, homelessness and the urban struggle, they also capture some of the more tender moments that make it all worth it.

Poem-A-Day: To My Best Friend's Big Sister by Ross Gay

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 03:31 AM PDT

October 11, 2013
To My Best Friend's Big Sister
by Ross Gay

One never knows
does one
how one comes to be
standing
most ways to naked
in front of one's pal's
big sister who has, simply
by telling me to,
gotten me to shed
all but the scantest
flap of fabric
and twirl before her
like a rotisserie
chicken as she
observes
and offers thoughtful critique
of my just
pubescent physique
which is not
a thing
to behold
what with my damp trunks
clinging to
my damp crotch
and proportion and grace
are words the definition
of which I don't yet know
nor did I ask the
the mini-skirted scientist
sitting open-legged
and now shoeless
on my mom's couch
though it may have been
this morning
while chucking papers
I heard through the Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock
pulsing my walkman
a mourning
dove struggling
snared in the downspout's
mouth and without
lowering the volume
or missing a verse
I crinkled the rusted aluminum
trap enough that with
a little wriggle
it was free
and did not
at once
wobble to some
powerline but sat on my hand
and looked at me
for at least
one verse of "It Takes Two"
sort of bobbing
its head
and cooing once or twice
before flopping off
but that seems very long ago
now
as I pirouette
my hairless and shivering
warble of acne and pudge
burning a hole
in the rug as big sis tosses off
Greek and Latin words
like pectorals and
gluteus maximus
standing to show me
what she means
with her hands on my love
handles and now
I can see myself
trying to add some gaudy flourish
to this memory
to make of it
a fantasy
which is why I linger
hoping to mis-recall
the child
me
make of me
someone I wasn't
make of this
experience the beginning
of a new life
gilded doors
kicked open blaring
trombones a full
beard Isaac Hayes singing in the background
and me thundering forth
on the wild steed
of emergent manhood
but I think this child was not
that child
obscuring, as he was, his breasts
by tucking his hands
into his armpits
and having never even made love
to himself
yet was not
really a candidate for much
besides the chill
of a minor shame
that he would forget for 15 years
one of what would prove
to be many
such shames
stitched together like a quilt
with all its just legible
patterning which could be a thing
heavy and warm
to be buried in
or instead might be held up
to the light
where we see the threads
barely holding
so human and frail
so beautiful and sad and small
from this remove.

About This Poem
"I am often amazed how minor though significant events slip out of my head and resurface--for various reasons. In this case, I imagine, the event slipped away because I was in some way wanting to protect ideas I have about myself--that is, I was ashamed of it, and maybe remained so until I was able to shake it out and kind of bless it with a poem."

[Fropki] Inventors Who were Killed by Their Own Creations

Funny Interpretative Dance: 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'

1. Sieur Freminet: Rebreathing Device (1772)

In 1772, Frenchman Sieur Freminet tried to invent a rebreathing device for scuba diving that recycled the exhaled air from inside of the barrel. This was the first self-contained air device. Unfortunately, Freminet's invention was a poor one, and the inventor died from lack of oxygen after being in his own device for twenty minutes.

2. Max Valier: Liquid-Fuelled Rocket Car (1930)

On May 17, 1930, Max Valier, an Austrian rocketry pioneer, was killed when an alcohol-fuelled rocket exploded on his test bench in Berlin.

In 1928 and 1929, Valier worked with Fritz von Opel on a number of rocket-powered cars and aircraft. By the late 1920s, Valier was focusing his efforts on liquid-fuelled rockets. Their first successful test with liquid fuel occurred in the Heylandt plant on January 25, 1930. On April 19, 1930, Valier performed the first test drive of a rocket car with liquid propulsion, the Valier-Heylandt Rak 7. One month later, the alcohol-fuelled rocket exploded during a test.

3. Henry Fleuss: Oxygen Rebreather (1876)

In 1876, Englishman Henry Fleuss invented a closed circuit oxygen rebreather. This suit used compressed oxygen instead of compressed air. His invention was originally intended to be used in the repair of the iron door of a flooded ship's chamber. Fleuss then decided to use his invention for a thirty-foot dive underwater. Unfortunately, he died from the pure oxygen; oxygen is toxic to humans under pressure.

4. Franz Reichelt: Parachute Suit (1912)

On February 4, 1912, Franz Reichelt, an Austrian-born French tailor, inventor, and parachuting pioneer, jumped from the Eiffel Tower while testing a wearable parachute of his own design. Despite attempts by his friends and spectators to dissuade him, he jumped from the first platform of the tower while wearing his invention. Unfortunately, the parachute failed to deploy and he crashed into the icy ground at the foot of the tower.

5. Karel Soucek: Shock-Absorbent Barrel (1985)

Karel Soucek was a Canadian professional stuntman who is famous for inventing "the capsule" and riding it down Niagara Falls. On that occasion he survived, although he suffered some injuries.

On January 19, 1985, Soucek convinced a company to finance a barrel drop from the top of the Houston Astrodome in Texas. A special waterfall was created from the top of the 180 ft. structure, with a plunge pit at the bottom. However, instead of landing in the center of the tank of water, the barrel hit the rim, causing the capsule to splinter and severely injure him. Soucek died the next day.

6. William Bullock: Rotary Printing Press (1867)

On April 3, 1867, William Bullock, an American inventor - whose 1863 invention of the web rotary printing press helped revolutionize the printing industry due to its great speed and efficiency - was making adjustments to one of his new presses. Bullock tried to kick a driving belt onto a pulley. However, his leg was crushed when it became caught in the machine. After a few days, he developed gangrene.

On April 12, 1867, Bullock died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during an operation to amputate the leg.

7. Aurel Vlaicu: Airplane Vlaicu II (1913)

On September 13, 1913, Aurel Vlaicu, a Romanian engineer, inventor, airplane constructor, and early pilot, died near Campina while attempting to be the first person to fly across the Carpathian Mountains in his own airplane, which he named Vlaicu II.

In 1912, Vlaicu won several prizes totaling 7,500 Austro-Hungarian krone for precise landing, projectile throwing, аnd tight flying around а pole аt the Aspern Air Show near Vienna. He competed against 42 оther famous aviators оf the day, including Roland Garros.

8. Thomas Midgley: System of Strings and Pulleys to Help Others Lift Him from Bed (1944)

When the famous American mechanical engineer and chemist Thomas Midgley, Jr. contracted poliomyelitis at the age of 51, he became severely disabled. This situation led him to devise an elaborate system of strings and pulleys to help others lift him from bed.

On November 2, 1944, at the age of 55, Midgley died of strangulation due to the system when he was entangled in the ropes of his own device.

9. Horace Lawson Hunley: Combat Submarine (1863)

On October 15, 1863, Horace Lawson Hunley, 40, a Confederate marine engineer, died when his own hand-powered submarine, the H.L. Hunley, was accidentally trapped on the bottom of Charleston Harbor, S.C.

10. Otto Lilienthal: Hang Gliders (1896)

On August 10, 1896, Otto Lilienthal, a German pioneer of aviation, was testing his hang gliders in the Rhinow Hills in Germany. The first flights were successful, reaching a distance of 250 meters in his normal glider. However, during the fourth flight Lilienthal's glider stalled. He tried to re-establish lift by swinging his body back to correct the attitude of the glider. That maneuver failed and he fell from a height of about 15 meters while still in the glider.

Lilienthal suffered a fracture of his third cervical vertebra and soon became unconscious. He died about 36 hours after the crash.

11. Jean-Francis Pilatre de Rozier: Roziere Balloon (1785)

On June 15, 1785, Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier, a French chemistry and physics teacher and one of the first pioneers of aviation, died when his Roziere balloon suddenly deflated (without the envelope catching fire) and crashed near Wimereux in the Pas-de-Calais during an attempt to fly across the English Channel. He and his companion, Pierre Romain, became the first known fatalities in an air crash.

12. Michael Dacre: Flying Taxi Device (2009)

On August 16, 2009, Michael Dacre, 53, a British aviation pioneer and managing director of the British-based company Avcen Ltd., was conducting the first test flight of his own "flying taxi." However, when he took to the air 150 miles north of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, the aircraft plunged to earth and the explosion claimed Mr. Dacre's life.

13. Wan Hu: Rocket Chair (16th century)

According to legend, Wan Hu was a minor Chinese official - supposedly of the middle Ming dynasty (16th century) - who decided to take advantage of China's advanced rocket and fireworks technology to launch himself into outer space. He supposedly had a chair built with forty-seven rockets attached. On the day of lift-off, Wan, wonderfully attired, climbed into his rocket chair while forty seven servants lit the fuses and then hastily ran for cover. There was a colossal explosion. When the smoke cleared, Wan and the chair were gone, never to be seen again.

A precursor of the story of Wan Hu appeared in an article by John Elfreth Watkins published in the October 2, 1909 issue of Scientific American, but it used the name Wang Tu instead of Wan Hu.
"Tradition asserts that the first to sacrifice himself to the problem of flying was Wang Tu, a Chinese mandarin of about 2,000 years B.C. who, having had constructed a pair of large, parallel and horizontal kites, seated himself in a chair fixed between them while forty-seven attendants each with a candle ignited forty-seven rockets placed beneath the apparatus. However the rocket under the chair exploded, burning the mandarin and so angered the Emperor that he ordered a severe paddling for Wang."

(It should be noted that a date of 2000 BC pre-dates the emergence of writing in China by three or four centuries and pre-dates the invention of gunpowder-based rockets in China by about 3,000 years.)

14. Isma'il ibn Hammad al-Jawhari: Wooden Wings (between 1002 and 1008)

Abu Nasr Isma'il ibn Hammad al-Jawhari, a Muslim Kazakh Turkic scholar from Farab and the author of a notable Arabic dictionary, died while attempting flight from the roof of a mosque in Nishapur using two wooden wings and a rope between 1002 and 1008.
