| Dear Friend, Two years ago I submitted a poetry manuscript to the Academy of American Poets to be considered for the Walt Whitman Award. I never dreamed I might win. But then, while I was waiting to board a plane, I received a call letting me know that Jane Hirshfield had selected my manuscript. Winning the Walt Whitman Award and having my book, Black Aperture, published has undeniably changed my life. Today, I’m writing to ask you to support the Academy so other authors have the same opportunity I did to get their work recognized. Not only did the Academy distribute my book to thousands of their members, they promoted it in their biannual journal, American Poet, and on Poets.org. This year Black Aperture was named a finalist for the National Book Award. The city I live in, Robbinsdale, MN, even named a day after me! With support from people like you, the Academy of American Poets has been helping young poets build an audience for their work for eight decades. I hope you will take a moment today to make a donation to the Academy so they might continue this work well into the future. Your contribution will make next year's Walt Whitman Award possible, as well as free educational resources on Poets.org. And, it might just inspire a love of poetry in the young person who will win the Walt Whitman Award in 2023 or 2033. Thank you, Matt Rasmussen Winner, 2012 Walt Whitman Award National Book Award Finalist P.S. If your gift is $50 or more, the Academy will send you an Emily Dickinson notebook printed with her famous lines "There is no Frigate like a Book /To take us Lands away" as a token of their thanks for your generosity. |
