As a student in a school run by the church, Easter was a joyous occasion, and the imagery of life and new beginnings made it all the more fun.
1. It was the first of all the holidays in the new school term.
Sometimes Friday of the first week of school would end up being Good Friday, thereby making it a three-day weekend. Now who didn't want that?
2. Chocolate overload.
As kids, Easter had always been about Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies rather than its religious ceremonies. I remember begging my mother to buy me an Easter egg when we visited a cake shop in central Calcutta. After that, she would buy me an egg and a chocolate bunny every year. It was only when I turned 12 that she suddenly stopped and I realised I wasn't a kid anymore. So now I just buy them for myself :)
3. Arts and crafts class in school.
The week leading to Good Friday was always filled with art and crafts classes at school that were all Easter-themed. Whether it was painting Easter eggs, making little chicks out of cotton balls, colouring pictures of Easter bunnies, or making clay figurines of rabbits. To make sure students took it seriously, teachers graded the work and it was put on display through the academic year or until the classroom got too cluttered.
4. Sunrise Mass on Easter Sunday.
Several devotees attend sunrise mass which is symbolic of a new beginning. If you haven't done this before, you should definitely go for one. Just don't have too much to drink the night before.
These were sometimes followed by processions.
5. Easter episodes of cartoons that were aired on the Easter weekend.
Unlike Halloween and Christmas, the only two cartoons that had Easter-themed episodes were Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes. Remember these Easter specials?
6. Easter-themed food.
It doesn't just end with chocolates and candy. Some of you might remember this:
A little chick made from creamed mashed potato hatching from a boiled egg.
....And this...
Hot cross buns are a traditional Easter bread from England. Although it is not widely known across India, they were baked and introduced by the Anglo-Indian community. It is believed that splitting a hot cross raisin bun with a friend signifies long and everlasting friendship.
7. Family movies to get you into the Easter spirit.
Hop is a cute flick where the animated world meets the real world when the new Easter Bunny decides to move to Hollywood to pursue his dream of becoming a drummer.
This Disney classic, Bambi, will take you straight back to the 1990s and the classic dialogue that applies to a lot of people you would most likely meet today: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!"
The Prince of Egypt will take you back to Biblical times and give you a better idea of how religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam were formed.
