[Fropki] 11 Of The Greenest Cities In India Posted: 05 May 2015 08:48 PM PDT (Please let the pics open. Might take some time on a slower connection. If you can't see the pictures, right click the small Red-Cross and choose Show Picture to view it.) India ranks much lower on the green index as compared to other countries. But we are still trying to catch up. Take a look at 11 cities that are trying their best to keep their greenery safe. 1. ChandigarhThis is not only the most planned city in India, but is also the greenest. It is the capital of two states, Punjab and Haryana. The city is full of parks that have been maintained by the government, and is famous for the Rock Gardens, Rose Garden and Suhana Lake. The city ranks third in forest cover after Lakshwadeep and Goa. 2. NagpurNagpur city has a wide range of natural and manmade lakes. The city is well maintained and the roads are surrounded by numerous trees. Nagpur has many parks along with 3 wildlife sanctuaries and is known as the Orange City. 3. GandhinagarThis is the second most planned city in India after Chandigarh. It has 32 lakh trees across the city, and is situated on the banks of the Sabramati river. The city is famous for the Akshardham Temple, museums and Sarita Udyan. 4. GuwahatiThis city is located at the foot of the Khasi Hills on the banks of the Brahmaputra. It is home to the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary and is known for its wide variety of flora and fauna. We are definitely not surprised to see this one on the list. 5. MysoreMysore is the second largest city in Karnataka and is known for its rich cultural heritage. It is closer to various wildlife sanctuaries including the Nagarhole National Park. The city ranks high on the green index. 6. DehradunWe all know Dehradun as the peaceful city. But that's not it. It is also one of the cleanest cities in India and rates high when it comes to greenery. Besides being located in the Himalayas, this city is also famous for verdure mountains and waterfalls. It is one of the highest rain receiving cities in northern India and is the residence of prestigious institutions like the Indian Military Academy. 7. JameshedpurThis city is the first planned industrial city in India. The city falls under deciduous type of forests. 33% of its total land is covered with greenery. Major attractions of the city are Jubilee Park, Zoological Park and Dimna lake. 8. ShimlaWe know from our history textbooks that Shimla was the summer capital for the British. Its strategic location makes it a popular tourist destination. Interestingly, it is known as the Queen Of Hills and has a rich flora and fauna. 9. BhopalBhopal has a total of 33 lakes all over the city. This city is located at the upper limit of the Vindhiya mountain ranges with two lakes surrounding it. Bhopal is full of lush green trees and is the residence of Van Vihar National Park. 10. BhubaneshwarThis city is called the Temple City of India. And surprisingly enough, it is also one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country. The Chandaka reserve forest is quite close to Bhubaneshwar. Most importantly, there is no dearth of greenery in this city. 11. DelhiSadly, Delhi has dropped down on this list, and we have only improving infrastructure to blame. Delhi has a wide variety of parks scattered all over the city and parts of it are still covered with trees. Interestingly, a lot of buildings in India are being designed with the concept of going green. We hope that it helps to elevate Delhi's position on this list. [Fropki] Think You're A Brave Driver? Test Your Nerves Here Posted: 05 May 2015 05:46 AM PDT You may also like: This Electrical Experiment Is So Cool Like Art Yikes! This bridge looks like multiple accidents waiting to happen, but the locals cross it every day. The bridge, which rises 44 meters (about 145 feet) into the air, was designed with a relatively steep incline so that ships could pass beneath it. And as long as they aren't afraid of heights, drivers can see some pretty amazing panoramas. It's also just over a mile long and pretty narrow, with no guardrails between the lanes. Sounds like a fun commute, no? The bridge actually looks like this. The incline is magnified from the driver's point of view because of the compression of perspective, which makes it appear crazy-steep when it's really just kind of steep. We had you going for a bit, didn't we? Think about it. If the incline were really as steep as it appears in the images above, you'd see much more of the cars' roofs than you do. It's an optical illusion! The highest point of the bridge looks even more impressive with the mountain under it! Though it's not the roller coaster ride that it appears to be from a head-on perspective, the bridge is still on the steeper side, and motorists must exercise extra caution. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Want More Interesting Mails in your Inbox? [Fropki] This Handmade Castle's Story Is Totally Unexpected Posted: 04 May 2015 11:37 PM PDT You may also like: Rosie Huntington's Wild Shoot David Bellemere Originally from Latvia, Leedskalnin was abandoned by his then-fiancee on the day before their wedding. He then made his way to America and came down with tuberculosis. When he arrived in Florida, Leedskalnin bought a parcel of land and got to work on what he then called Rock Gate Park, now commonly known as Coral Castle. No one really knows how Leedskalnin built Coral Castle. The castle is actually made from a type of limestone that is often found near fossils and/or coral. The castle and all its structures weigh a whopping 1,000 tons. Despite the weight, Leedskalnin moved the structures from several locations over the years, before finally settling in Miami in 1936. When asked how the castle was built, Leedskalnin would often give various misleading or ridiculous answers and claim that it was, "not difficult if you know how." Like the rest of the castle, the entrance gate is a true miracle of engineering. The entrance gate to the castle weighs many tons, but can be opened with a soft touch. For years, visitors had no idea how such a heavy object could be moved with such little force. Engineers eventually discovered that the gate rested on an automotive bearing, which moved the massively heavy door back and forth without a problem. The castle grounds include a variety of sculptures, also made by Leedskalnin. Leedskalnin was not an expert sculptor by any means, but his sculptures give a fittingly somber tone to his castle. Leedskalnin also wrote a number of books and proposed quite a few odd medical and philosophical theories. He believed his tuberculosis was made better through the power of magnetism, and wrote several theories about using magnets and electricity for healing purposes. Leedskalnin also wrote a book on moral education and the need to keep young girls, "chaste and faithful." However, it could be argued that these bizarre writings were part of his traumatic breakup, just like the castle. Edward Leedskalnin lived in the castle, and died during its construction. Though he died of a kidney infection in 1951, Leedskalnin was still hard at work at perfecting this monument to his "Sweet Sixteen" reportedly the woman who jilted him in Latvia. Before his death, Leedskalnin greeted visitors from the second floor of the castle and asked them to contribute 10 cents as an entrance fee to see his hard work. Coral Castle is now a registered historic site. After Leedskalnin's death, the castle changed hands several times until a company came in and made it a tourist attraction. The castle today is more or less in the condition Leedskalnin left it in before he died. It's recognized today as a small but important part of South Florida's history. Signs from the castle's original construction are still affixed to the walls. I think it's safe to assume that admission's gone up over the years. Spending 28 years on building a castle with your own hands takes focus and dedication. Imagine what Edward Leedskalnin could have done in that time if he moved on and met someone else. Sure, he wouldn't have created such a wonderful work of living art, but at least he also wouldn't have been so heartbroken. He really must have been affected by his breakup! [Fropki] 16 Scenic Villages In India That You Must Visit At Least Once Posted: 03 May 2015 08:36 PM PDT (Please let the pics open. Might take some time on a slower connection. If you can't see the pictures, right click the small Red-Cross and choose Show Picture to view it.) 1. Amarkantak, Madhya PradeshA pilgrimage site for Hindus, Amarkantak is the source of the Narmada and Sone rivers. Picturesque ponds, hills, forests and waterfalls make the village a very sought after destination for tourists. The story of the ashes of Shiva's destruction fell on the village that magically transformed into thousands of shivalingas. One such idol still stands today at Jwaleshwar. Amarkantak got its name from the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, who called it Amrakoot due to the abundance of mango trees. Despite several pilgrims visiting it every year, accommodation is limited to state run guest lodges and ashrams. 2. Tawang, Arunachal PradeshLocated 3048 metres above sea level, Tawang is located in the northwestern edge of Arunachal Pradesh and shares a border with Tibet. It is well known for the Tawang Monastery which was founded by the Mera Lama Lodre Gyasto in accordance with the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso. It belongs to the Gelugpa sect and is the largest Buddhist monastery in India. The gilded roofs stand majestically with the background of the Himalayas, and the 8-m-tall statue seated Buddha is a grand image to be seen. 3. Dhanushkodi, Tamil NaduThe origins of this town lies in Hindu mythology where Lord Rama was crowned the King of Lanka after defeating Ravana. He was asked to destroy the Rama Setu which he had built in order to cut off the island and he did so with his bow and arrow. Hence the literal translation of the name is "Bow's end" (Dhanush for bow and kodi means end). Today on the southern most tip of Pamban island and the closest point of India to Sri Lanka lies an abandoned ghost town. A cyclone in 1964 destroyed it and several people lost their lives. Today, visitors and pilgrims to nearby Rameswaram (18 km away) visit the ruins and remains of the town. 4. Punsari, GujaratThis is sometimes called the model village as it has embraced modernity by adopting technology in every aspect. Every household has access to wi-fi while CCTVs have been installed for the security of all residents. Some of the facilities provided by the panchayat include local mineral water supply, sewer & drainage projects, a healthcare centre, banking facilities and a toll-free complaint reception service. The scenery is not the highlight but the astounding development that we could never imagine for an Indian village is top-notch. 5. Sanchi, Madhya PradeshSanchi houses various Buddhist memorials and historic sites which belong to the period ranging from 12th century CE (Common Era) to 3rd century BCE (Before Common Era). The Sanchi Stupa is a popular Buddhist pilgrimage centre in India. The area has won the honor of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Several pilgrims come here to visit the memorials as it played a significant role in the rise of Buddhism in the country. Other than the stupas, there is an archaeological museum in place which houses a number of amazing relics and works of art. These works of art truly reflect the culture and background of this famous pilgrimage site. Stunning carvings and implements made of metal as ancient as 2000 years would instill a sense of that period in you. Sanchi is 46 km from Bhopal. 6. Tanot, RajasthanThis village is close to the border with Pakistan and has a connection to the Kargil War. In 1965, the Pakistani army tried to bomb the Tanot Mata Temple but none of the bombs fell directly on it or damaged any of the property. Today those bomb shells are housed in the army museum of the temple which is run by the jawans. Tanot is a sea of dunes and is the best place to admire the beauty of the Thar desert in winter. For all you Bollywood fans out there, the movie Border was shot here. 7. Chaukori, UttarakhandSandwiched between the Indo-China and Indo-Nepal borders, Chaukori offers views of the Greater Himalayan peaks of Nanda Kot, Panchchuli, Nanda Khat and Nanda Devi. There is no physical spot in Chaukori that is a sight to see, except for the abundance of nature that instills a calming effect as you take a walk through forests of deodars, rhododendrons, spruce, oaks and pine trees, with chirping birds and invigourating fresh air. Chaukori also attracts several nature sports enthusiasts who loving river rafting, trekking and rock climbing.
8. Ajabgarh, RajasthanIt is said that visiting the site of Bhangarh fort is prohibited after sunset and before sunrise due to the presence of tigers (Sariska Tiger Reserve is not very far away) and other supernatural entities. Ajabgarh, a dusty village, and Bhangarh, a ruined city, were both abandoned after they were said to be cursed by a sorcerer. However visiting in the daytime will reveal that the remains tell a story of beautiful architecture despite the harsh climate of the region. 9. Gavi, KeralaKerala is not all about beaches, backwaters and riceboats. Near the Periyar National Park lies Gavi which is one of the best places catered to visitors inclined towards eco-tourism. Endangered species including the Nilgiri Tahr and lion-tailed macaque are often seen at the outskirts of Gavi. Kerala's very own treasure elephants can be spotted abundantly. Bird watchers are in for a treat here, with more than 260 species of birds, including the great pied hornbill, woodpecker, and kingfishers. 10. Harsil, UttarakhandNestled in the Kumaon Himalayas, this sleepy hill station is everything you need to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Wake up with the chirping of birds, smell the wild flowers and watch the rays of the sun paint this little hamlet with its own hues. A 7-km-trek away from Harsil is Sattal which is a cluster of seven lakes amid breathtaking scenery. The religious site of Gangotri is a further 24 km away. 11. Khajjiar, Himachal PradeshCalled the mini Switzerland of India, Khajjiar sits on a small plateau with a small stream-fed lake in the middle that has been covered over with weeds. The hill station is surrounded by green meadows and dense forests. It is about 6,500 feet (2,000 m) above sea level in the foothills of the Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas and snowy peaks can be seen in the distance. It is part of the Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary. 12. Dindigul, Tamil NaduDindigul is believed to be an ancient settlement. It has been ruled at different times by the Early Pandyan Kingdom, the Medieval Cholas, Pallava dynasty, the later Pandyas, the Madurai Sultanate, the Dindigul Sultanates, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Madurai Nayak Dynasty, Chanda Sahib, the Carnatic kingdom and the British. Dindigul has a number of historical monuments, the Rock Fort being the most prominent. 13. Kuldhara, RajasthanJust like Ajabgarh and Bhangarh, the village of Kuldhara was abandoned overnight but the remains of the village are still there. Most prominent is the temple and the various little houses that people lived in. The village is said to be haunted and many supernatural activities have been reported. If you do get a chance to visit before sunset and after sunrise, the beauty of this once-flourishing village is well worth it. 14. Longkhum, NagalandLongkhum has breathtaking views of mountains and valleys surrounding it and is home to a precipice of eagles who are believed by local people to be spirits of the dead. Major tourist attractions include the Mata Yimkong - the top of the hillock where once stood a fortress and the students' Jubilee Tower, the highest point of the village. The footprints preserved on a rock surface, believed to be of Chenna and Etiben the Romeo and Juliet of the Ao Naga tribe, is another interesting spot worth visiting. 15. Dharali, UttarakhandThe village of Dharali is 2 km away from Harsil, across the Bhagirathi river. Views are said to be better of the mountains and valleys as well as of the turbulent river. The hustle and bustle of Yatris headed towards Gangotri is also less in comparison. In winter, the idol of Goddess Ganga is brought to Dharali as a winter retreat. 16. Tumling, border of West Bengal and NepalOn the way to the popular trekking destination, Tumling is a small hamlet inhabited by a few Nepali families and is right on the border of West Bengal and the Himalayan nation. Indian citizens and foreigners do not require a visa. At the center of Tumling, there is a view point where you can get magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga snow peaks.
