About This Poem

 

“Sonnet—Mutation” first appeared in The United States Literary Gazette in 1824. It was later published in Bryant’s book Poems (Russell, Odiorne, and Metcalf, 1834).

 

William Cullen Bryant was born on November 3, 1794. A poet and journalist, he wrote many pieces championing the rights of workers and immigrants. He was the editor in chief of the New York Evening Post from 1829 until his death in 1878.
