[Fropki] 5 War Heroes India Cannot Afford To Forget About

Mallika Sherawat Goes Dirty with Big Tools

Take a look at India's history and you'll realise that we have never attacked a country first. Unfortunately, we have been subjected to war on a number of occasions. India's armed forces have kept the invaders out and in the process, many brave sons of the soil have had to make the ultimate sacrifice to keep the country safe.

But we are a country that tends to forget its heroes. So here's a reminder of the courage and valour of 5 men you need to know about.

1. Captain Anuj Nayyar

17 Jat

Maha Vir Chakra

On 06 July 1999, Charlie Company was tasked to capture an objective, which was a part of the Pimple Complex on the Western Slopes of Point 4875, in the Mushkoh Valley. At the beginning of the attack, the Company Commander got injured and the command of the company devolved on Captain Anuj Nayyar. Captain Nayyar continued to command his leading platoon into the attack under heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire. As the platoon advanced, the leading section reported location of 3 to 4 enemy positions. Captain Nayyar moved forward towards the first enemy position and fired rocket launchers and lobbed grenades into it.

Thereafter, the section, along with Captain Nayyar, physically assaulted and cleared the position. The enemy, which was well entrenched, brought a heavy volume of automatic fire. Captain Anuj Nayyar, unmindful of his personal safety, motivated his men and cleared two more enemy positions. While clearing the fourth position, an enemy rocket-propelled grenade hit the officer killing him on the spot. This action led by Captain Anuj Nayyar resulted in killing nine enemy soldiers and the destruction of three medium machine gun positions of the enemy. The success of this operation after a brief setback was largely due to the outstanding personal bravery and exemplary junior leadership of this daring officer. Captain Anuj Nayyar displayed indomitable resolve, grit and determination, and motivated his command by personal example. He acted beyond the call of duty and made the supreme sacrifice in true traditions of the Indian Army.

2. Lt. Arun Khetarpal

17 Poona Horse

Param Vir Chakra

On 16 December 1971, the squadron Commander of 'B' Squadron, the Poona Horse asked for reinforcements as the Pakistani armour that was superior in strength, counter attacked at Jarpal, in the Shakargarh Sector. On hearing this transmission, Second Lt Khetarpal, who was in 'A' Squadron, voluntarily moved along with his troop, to assist the other squadron. En route, while crossing the Basantar River, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal and his troops came under fire from enemy strong points and RCL gun nests that were still holding out. Time was at a premium and as a critical situation was developing in the 'B' Squadron sector, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, threw caution to the winds and started attacking the impending enemy strong points by literally charging them. In the course of one such daring attack, one tank commander of his troop was killed. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal continued to attack relentlessly until all enemy opposition was overcome and he broke through towards the 'B' Squadron position, just in time to see the enemy tanks pulling back after their initial probing attack on this squadron. He was so carried away by the wild enthusiasm of battle and the impetus of his own headlong dash that he started chasing the withdrawing tanks and even managed to shoot and destroy one.

Soon thereafter, the enemy reformed with a squadron of armour for a second attack and this time they selected the sector held by Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal and two other tanks as the point for their main effort. A fierce tank fight ensued - ten enemy tanks were hit and destroyed of which Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal personally destroyed four. Just then Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was severely wounded. He was asked to abandon his tank but he realized that the enemy, though badly decimated, was continuing to advance in his sector of responsibility, and if he abandoned his tank the enemy would break through. He gallantly fought on and destroyed another enemy tank. At this stage, his tank received a second hit which resulted in the death of this gallant officer.

Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was dead but he had, by his intrepid valour, saved the day. He showed the best qualities of leadership, tenacity of purpose and the will to close in with the enemy. This was an act of courage and self-sacrifice far beyond the call of duty.  The enemy was denied the breakthrough he was so desperately seeking. Not one enemy tank got through.

3. Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid

4 Grenadiers

Param Vir Chakra

On 10 September 1965, Pakistan forces launched an attack with a regiment of Patton tanks on a vital area ahead of village Cheema on the Bhikkiwind road in the Khem Karan Sector. Intense artillery shelling preceded the attack. The enemy tanks penetrated the forward position by 0900 hours. Realising the grave situation, Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, who was commander of an RCL gun detachment moved out to a flanking position with his gun mounted on a jeep, under intense enemy shelling and tank fire. Taking an advantageous position, he knocked out the leading enemy tank and then swiftly changing his position, sent another tank up in flames. By this time, the enemy tanks in the area spotted him and brought his jeep under concentrated machine-gun and high explosive fire. Undeterred, Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid kept on firing on yet another enemy tank with his recoilless gun. While doing so, he was mortally wounded by an enemy high explosive shell.

Havildar Abdul Hamid's brave action inspired his comrades to put up a gallant fight and to beat back the heavy tank assault by the enemy. His complete disregard for his personal safety during the operation and his sustained acts of bravery in the face of constant enemy fire were a shining example not only to his unit, but also to the whole division.

4. Major Shaitan Singh

13 Kumaon

Param Vir Chakra

Major Shaitan Singh was commanding a company of an infantry battalion deployed at Rezang La in the Chusul sector at a height of about 17,000 feet. The locality was isolated from the main defended sector and consisted of five platoon-defended positions. On 18 November 1962, Chinese forces subjected the company position to heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire and attacked it in overwhelming strength in several successive waves. Against heavy odds, our troops beat back successive waves of enemy attack. During the action, Major Shaitan Singh dominated the scene of operations and moved at great personal risk from one platoon post to another, sustaining the morale of his hard-pressed platoon posts. While doing so, he was seriously wounded but continued to encourage and lead his men, who, following his brave example fought gallantly and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. For every man lost to us, the enemy lost four or five. When Major Shaitan Singh fell disabled by wounds to his arms and abdomen, his men tried to evacuate him but came under heavy machine-gun fire. Major Shaitan Singh then ordered his men to leave him to his fate in order to save their lives.

Major Shaitan Singh's supreme courage, leadership and exemplary devotion to duty inspired his company to fight almost to the last man.

5. Major Somnath Sharma

4 Kumaon

Param Vir Chakra

On 3 November 1947, Major Somnath Sharma's company was ordered on a fighting patrol to Badgam in the Kashmir Valley. He reached his objective at first light on 3 November, and took up a position south of Badgam at 1100 hours. The enemy, estimated at about 500, attacked his company position from three sides; the company began to sustain heavy casualties.

Fully realizing the gravity of the situation and the direct threat that would result to both the aerodrome and Srinagar via Hum Hom, Major Somnath Sharma urged his company to fight the enemy tenaciously. With extreme bravery he kept rushing across the open ground to his sections exposing himself to heavy and accurate fire to urge them to hold on.

Keeping his nerve, he skillfully directed the fire of his sections into the ever-advancing enemy. He repeatedly exposed himself to the full fury of enemy fire and laid out cloth strips to guide our aircrafts onto their targets in full view of the enemy.

Realising those casualties had affected the effectiveness of his light automatics, this officer, whose left hand was in plaster, personally commenced filling magazines and issuing them to the light machine gunners. A mortar shell landed right in the middle of the ammunition resulting in an explosion that killed him.

Major Sharma's company held on to list position and the remnants withdrew only when almost completely surrounded. His inspiring example resulted in the enemy being delayed for six hours, thus gaining time for our reinforcements to get into position at Hum Hom to stem the tide of the enemy advance.

His leadership, gallantry and tenacious defense were such that his men were inspired to fight the enemy by seven to one, six hours after this gallant officer had been killed. He has set an example of courage and qualities seldom equaled in the history of the Indian Army. His last message to the Brigade Headquarters a few moments before he was killed was, 'the enemy is only 50 yards from us. We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire. I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to the last man and the last round.'

[Fropki] 12 Insane PicturesThat Make Istanbul Look Like A Scene From Inception

Sexy Huma Qureshi's Assets Xposed in See-Thru Dress

Inception fans, we might not have gotten enough from Cristopher Nolan's movie of epic proportions, but here's a little something that'll surely have you glued to the screen of your device. Turkish artist Aydın Büyüktaş, aiming to challenge the viewer's perspective, has distorted the city of Istanbul into something truly surreal.

The idea was originally inspired by Edwin A. Abbott's satirical novel "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions." A story of a two-dimensional world occupied by geometric figures. Talking about his project, titled 'Flatland', Büyüktaş says, "We live in places that most of the times don't draw our attention, places that transform our memories, places that the artist gives another dimension, these works aim to leave the viewer alone with a surprising visuality, ironic as well as multidimensional, romantic point of view."

About This Poem

“Some plants spread their seeds by attaching to passersby. For the tumbleweed, the passerby is the wind, and rather than sending seeds, the whole plant hitches a ride—and in order to do so, must die. This philosophically-rich situation was the entry point for this poem.”

Braless Shruti Hassan's Dress Too Deep to Cover Anything

The things you can find in India cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Our country really is a paradise for every shopaholic. From jewelry to handicrafts, from textiles to furniture, you'll find endless variety in even the smallest of things. So here we are, listing the best things you can buy in India, and the perfect destination you'll find them. Take a look.

1. Mysore, Karnataka

Mysore is located in the state of Karnataka, 146 km away from Bangalore. It offers great tourist attractions including three palaces - Amba Vilas, Jaganmohana Vilas and Rajendra Vilas. But apart from that, there's plenty to buy in Mysore.

The best option would be sandalwood handicrafts, which are a dime a dozen. You can pick up some really nice hand crafted decoration pieces for your home. The good thing about these products is that the aroma of sandalwood is retained in these products.

2. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Varanasi or Benaras, located in Uttar Pradesh, is one of India's busiest cities. Besides, it is also considered the spiritual capital of India.

But that's not all about Benaras. It is the best place to buy gorgeous Banarasi silk saris, in the most unique colour combinations, and sometimes even with zari work. If you are looking for something expensive, you can buy one with a gold and silver brocade without which your bridal trousseau is incomplete. It is also the perfect place to buy 'kamandalam', the utensil saints use for drinking water, and other brassware from here.

3. Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh

Saharanpur is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and is full of fertile agricultural land where grains and fruits grow aplenty. However, if you are looking for traditional furniture for your house, this is the place to go.

At Saharanpur, you can find the best carved wooden furniture. If you are looking for old school wooden partitions, you should definitely visit this place.

4. Tripura

Tripura, located in north-eastern India, is the third smallest state in the country.

If you are someone who likes minimalism, then you are bound to like bamboo furniture. It's light weight, easy to maintain and classy looking. Tripura is the place to go to for bamboo beds, sofa sets, tables and partitions.

5. Kolkata, West Bengal

Kolkata, capital of West Bengal, is considered the cultural centre of the country. Apart from vintage buildings, and old school bakeries, Kolkata is a shopping hub too.

We recommend you buy red bordered saris from here, which are traditionally Bengali. Every wardrobe is incomplete without at least one of these.

6. Jaipur, Rajasthan

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is the place to go to soak in some history. The city is surrounded by forts and mahals that force you back in time.

As far as shopping is concerned, Jaipur has a little too much to offer.  Apart from buying quilts, rajais, silver jewellery and gem stones, you can buy thewa jewellery from here. Thewa is made on molten glass, and gold is embossed on it. One piece of thewa jewellery takes about a month to get ready as it requires fine craftsmanship. It originated during the Mughal era, and very few villages continue to make this jewellery.

7. Surat, Gujarat

Surat, located in the state of Gujarat, is on the rise in terms of development. Additionally, it is also called the diamond city of the world.

Thus, it's obvious that this is your stop to buy diamonds. From uncut raw diamonds to solitaire rings, you'll get everything here.

8. Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Jodhpur, set in the beautiful landscape of the Thar desert is the city of forts, palaces and temples. Evenings here are spectacular, and it's a photographer's delight to capture the sunset here.

But more than that, this is another place where you can buy plenty of things. But we suggest you visit this place for the best mojaris. You can get a great variety in these. From very basic pairs to the ones in solid pastel colors, you'll find all sorts of mojaris here. For men too!

9. Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh

Firozabad is about 240 km from Delhi. It is believed that during the rule of Akbar, revenue was brought in through this city. Apart from having a historical significance, this city is called the city of bangles. The glass bangles, to be precise, are to die for.

Firozabad has a big glassware industry. There are over 400 factories of glass in this place, where articles like coloured glass pieces for chandeliers and so on are made. Make sure you wrap up your trip with a few boxes of bangles.

10. Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, the capital city of UP is also known as the city of nawabs. This is also the city where you will find the world's yummiest kebabs. Lucknow is also an important centre of government, education, tourism, music and poetry.

But there's a lot to shop for. Make sure you buy some chikankari work from here. Moreover, Lucknow is also a place you'll find traditional fragrances, so don't stop yourself from buying a few tiny bottles of those scents.

11. Hyderabad, Telangana

Hyderabad is one of India's biggest cities with a prestigious past. The city was a major centre for the Chalukya dynasty. In 1769, it became the capital of the Nizams. Back in the day, it was called the city of pearls and diamonds, and some of it stands true even today.

In Hyderabad, you get pearls of every price and range, of various shades, and of various kinds. You could buy just earrings, or entire pearl sets, but this is the place to get yourself some good old pearl jewellery.

[Fropki] 7 Jugaads That Turned Out To Be Great Indian Innovations

Priyanka's Bombshell Sister Mannara Hot Upskirt

No one can be as resourceful as a jugaad loving Indian. These quick fixes are what keeps most of us going. While most of us turn to these quick fixes when we run out of other options, these people have actually managed to invent a permanent solution for their problems. After all, no one can beat us in our own game of quick fixes, eh?

1. Jugaad

Is this is motorbike or a rickshaw? It's neither! This ingenious vehicle is actually called jugaad! Cheap and effective!

2. Jugaad For A Smoother Ride

This super effective jugaad is a hit on the streets of Gujarat. Someone finally figured out a cheap way to keep bikers safe especially during Uttarayan, the popular kite festival. This wire frame deflects kite manjas and ensures that bikers have a smooth ride.

3. House Of Plastic

You remember the 'best out of waste' competition in school? These people have taken that concept to a whole new level. This architectural wonder is made completely of plastic waste. Yes, all your cola bottles have been put to good use here.

4. Machine That Washes Away Your Thirst

You'd think that this is a joke but you'd be wrong. Punjabis love their big glasses of lassi and this is what they've come up with to satiate their thirst for lassi. Yes, that's a blinged out washing machine that makes lassi.

5. The Makeshift Fan

Remember eating a steaming hot bhutta on a cold, rainy day? This man remembers it too but for a different reason. Tired of fanning the pieces of coal that cook the bhutta, this man made a makeshift fan and light with scrap material. Genius!

6. Creative Jugaad

Now this is a jugaad we can be super proud of! A student from IIT Kanpur has made a wheelchair that can go up and down a staircase without the aid of planks.

7. E-Fridge

We love cool inventions and we love cool puns! Mitticool is a fridge made up entirely of clay that doesn't require any electricity.

About This Poem

“In the street, on the television, in the (social) media, I sometimes catch myself gawking at the bad behavior of others. This outward gaze bothers me: I find that it prevents introspection and obscures my view of my own behavior, relationships, biases, etc. Also, this gaze creates distance between me and my subject(s), making me blind to our shared humanity.”
—Iain Haley Pollock

Iain Haley Pollock is the author of Spit Back a Boy (University of Georgia Press, 2011).  He teaches at Rye Country Day School in Rye, New York, and is a member of the poetry faculty at the Solstice MFA Program of Pine Manor College.

[Fropki] 11 Pictures That Depict The Formative Years Of Our Republic Day Parade

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 08:02 PM PST

(Please let the pics open. Might take some time on a slower connection.

Baby Hottie Tapsee Goes Backless in Sexy Gown

We're all used to the idea that Republic Day means a parade on Delhi's Rajpath. But did you know that the Republic Day parade that we all come to take for granted didn't exist in its present form for the first five years of India becoming a republic? You probably didn't.

Don't worry, we are happy to help. In 11 pictures, here's how our Republic Day celebration came into being.

1. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the President of India right before the celebrations of the first Republic Day began.

The swearing in ceremony took place at Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan. After which the then Governor-general C Rajagopalachari (centre) declared India as a Republic.

2. 31 men lined up fire in the air - the 31 gun salute.

3.  While the President now arrives in a cavalcade of cars, in the olden days a horse drawn carriage was all it took.

4. Hoisting the flag is an age old tradition.

5. There has always been a chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations. Indonesian President Sukarno had the honour of being the first ever.

Security wasn't that big an issue for us back then!

6.  The first Republic Day parade took place at Irwin Stadium which is now the national stadium. About 15, 000 people witnessed it.

7. It was only in 1955 that Rajpath, earlier known as Kingsway, became the permanent venue for the Republic Day Parade.

That very year, Governor General Malik Ghulam Muhammad from Pakistan was invited as the chief guest of the ceremony.

8. Our parade always had the tableaux trend, but these jhankis were way more simple back then!

9. Jhankis made there way through the streets of Connaught Place so that the common people could enjoy the sight.

10. Back in the day, massive crowds were very easy to manage.

11. But these broken chairs from Republic Day 1955 tell us that a mess always followed.
