Get Ready for Summer

In this last Educator Newsletter of the school year, we head into summer by a list of new poetry collections for summer reading and two new lesson plans to consider for the fall. We’ll return with a new newsletter as the school year begins!

Incredible Bridges: Featuring Minnie Bruce Pratt

This new lesson plan includes audio of Minnie Bruce Pratt reading her poem “The Great Migration,” and demonstrates how migrations within—and to and from—the United States, and their consequences, are a part of our common heritage. It’s part of the monthly series Incredible Bridges: Poets Creating Community, a project we developed in partnership with EDSITEment, the educational website of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Summer Reading

Looking to catch up on your poetry reading this summer? Take a look at Books Noted, a roundup of reviews by acclaimed literary critic Stephen Burt, featuring twelve new poetry books, including a recently discovered collection of Pablo Neruda’s poems, Then Come Back: The Lost Neruda. Read more.

Dear Poet Project

Thank you to all of the classrooms who participated in this year’s Dear Poet Project during National Poetry Month—we received over 1,300 letters! Take a look at some of the outstanding letters we received, along with correspondences between students and poets who serve on the Academy of American Poets Board of Chancellors.

Lesson Plan: On Marilyn Nelson's Poem “1905”

Earlier this year, we published a lesson plan on Marilyn Nelson’s book My Seneca Village. Here is a new lesson plan on Nelson’s poem “1905,” from her book Carver: A Life in Poems, which explores the life of George Washington Carver. This lesson was created by our Educator in Residence, Madeleine Fuchs Holzer, in collaboration with teachers from New Visions for Public Schools and the New York City Department of Education.
