"No one has ever become poor by giving"

The world has so much to offer – the aroma of gardens, the milkweed clad breeze, the rage of the wild, the innocence of a child, the wisdom of the elderly, the teachings of the learned and the very like. We take it all in with utmost enthusiasm and pride. But there comes a time, when a need arises to pay it forward. And it is best complimented when you are able to travel around the world while giving back to society. It enriches you and the ones around you. Here's a guide on how to go about it.

1. Contribute your unique skills in helping a small local business/NGO grow in exchange for stay

Local restaurants and welfare organisations around the world may not always have the budget for a high-end state-of-the-art team for its promotions and business development. With the kind of skills you possess, you can always find ways to help them grow. You can even help them in tasks like gardening or housekeeping. You can get in touch with these organisations through platforms like Worldpackers.com & Helpex.net.

2. Volunteer with international organisations

There are a number of international organisations always encouraging volunteers from different countries for their services. You will have to put your heart and soul, and toil relentlessly on the field. But, you will also find time to visit nearby attractions as well. A few that have offices in India - you can contact is Kibbutz, UN,WWOOF, WWF etc.

3. Volunteer for religious organisations

Many times, traveling and pilgrimages have complemented each other. Doing your part in serving the needy and indulging yourselves in prayer could bring you the peace you are in search for - for eg; serving a langar at a gurudwara when you are on a trip to Punjab or teaching at a school of the Missionaries of Charity when you're at Kolkata.

4. Volunteer with wildlife protection activists in their upcoming projects

Wildlife protection activists are always venturing out to create new sanctuaries or build roads, bridges and improve infrastructure for villages. They wouldn't mind a few helping hands in the process. It will give you an experience of primitive living and survival. You can follow them on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook to know about any upcoming projects. A few notable ones are Gerry Martin, Kartick Satyanarayan, Vijay Nishanth etc

5. If you happen to find outstanding talent or artisans in the remote villages you visit, find ways to promote them

Find producers, filmmakers, journalists or writers and create coverage (they are always on the lookout for an interesting story anyway). Or introduce them to ways they can upgrade their skills and bring it out there. Be creative and you'll always find a way to.

6. Tweet, Instagram, post or write a blog about the good-natured community you've met on your travels, encouraging tourism

7. Popularise unique recipes you haven't experienced before, through social media

Never forget to mention the name of the person/community you owe this to.

8. If you stay with a family that hosts you , insist on hosting them for a day

Prepare a meal or help them clean out their garage. If you're a beauty therapist, offer them a massage or if you're a designer, help them re-do their home. There are a million things you can think of if you try to.

9. Donate books, shoes, footwear or clothes you won't be using often anymore

It reduces the baggage – of the mind and of the body

10. Offer a ride to someone in need

It needs much less effort and the impression lasts a long way.
