Here's the thing about TV shows. Even though the makers always have a set target audience in mind, one cannot help but broadcast it to everyone out there. Which means that if a controversial topic is touched upon, international outrage is very much on the cards. We tried making a list of some controversial shows, and while some (very few) are still on the air, there are many others that have crashed, burned and been forgotten. Cheggit.

1. Skins (2007-13)

Skins was actually a pretty decent show. Revolving around the lives of several teenagers around England, it spoke about a number of things teenagers generally deal with nowadays, including bipolar disorders, eating disorders, parental issues, drugs and of course, sex. While some hailed the show for being brutally real, others panned it for exactly the same reason. 

2. Heil Honey, I'm Home (1990)

It was called the world's most tasteless situation comedy, and unfortunately for the makers, Heil Honey I'm Home panned out to be exactly that. The series had Adolf Hitler living a normal life with a Jewish couple living right next door. The show was about this fictitious Hitler being uncomfortable about his neighbours and his inability to get along. Not surprisingly, the show was cancelled after just one episode for reasons obvious to all but the makers. 

3. Australia's Naughtiest Videos (1992)

Most of us know about this old, really cute show called America's Funniest Videos, right? It was a bunch of home videos with Americans doing funny things. Well, Australia's Naughtiest Videos was something similar, but only ten times filthier. Although it is said that the show wasn't scripted, it involved animals and humans indulging in sexual intercourse on national television. You read that right. It wasn't really full-on pornography, but it wouldn't fall under any other category either. Perhaps why this show was shut down. Hilariously, it didn't even finish airing its first episode and was cancelled partway. Yes, it is also known as the fastest cancelled TV show ever.

4. South Park (1997- Present)

It is rather difficult to describe South Park accurately. Put it simply, South Park is a very badly sketched, 2D cartoon show about 4 little kids going to the South Park Elementary School. Here's the thing, there's nothing child-like about these 4 foul-mouthed kids. It's racist, it's sexist, it's homophobic, in fact, it talks about every controversial topic on the planet in the most insensitive way. South Park will end up being one of your favourite shows ever if your humour is inclined that way. However, it can also very easily be the most repelling thing you've seen. Oh boy, do I love this show. 

5. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (2012- 2014)

Before India started coming up with incredibly long, and excruciatingly bad titles for their television shows, America reserved the right of producing bad shows with an even worse name. Take Here Comes Honey Boo Boo for example. Following the lives of a stereotypical rural American family of five and especially Honey Boo Boo and her mother June Shannon, the show was heavily criticised for glorifying lousy parenting techniques. The final nail in the show's coffin came after reports surfaced that mama June Shannon was dating a man who was convicted of child molestation. Eeks!


6. All My Babies' Mamas (2013)

Say the name out loud in your head. Would you like to watch such a show? Thought so. But there was a lot more wrong than just the name. The show followed Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo and his 11 children from 10 different women. Promoting polygamy in the worst way possible, the show's premiere was eventually cancelled back in 2013 for its stereotypical portrayal of black families and glamorising unsafe premarital sex. A petition was started online which eventually led to the rightful demise of the show. 

7. Dexter (2006-2013)

Dexter was a great show with an underwhelming series finale. Something that still manages to bug me. The show revolved around Dexter Morgan, a blood-splatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police by the day and a serial killer hunting other serial killers by the night. The idea of having a serial killer taking on all the bad guys out there was a catchy concept, but obviously quite controversial too. Especially when dumb people started doing what they show on TV in real life. Apart from glorifying murder, it landed in hot sauce because it apparently inspired a number of murders in real life. A certain Mark Twitchell was found guilty of murdering John Altinger in true Dexter Morgan style. The show did affect the series negatively, but it did not get cancelled. Thankfully. 

8. Eaten Alive (2014)

Discovery went all out promoting the show, and to be frank, even I was quite excited to tune in. Who wouldn't?! They were airing a promo which showed a man getting swallowed by an anaconda, alive! Well, the plan was to go in head first and survive, just to see what happens. Although the promo was heavily condemned by animal rights groups around the world for putting the animal through such torture, Discovery claimed that the entire thing was in turn to promote conservation. Don't know how that works, but let us say that was the motive. The biggest fail happened on D-day when the man, smeared in pigs' blood to attract the snake (umm, animal rights?), couldn't manage to get eaten alive. Claiming the whole ordeal was way too painful, the whole thing crashed and burned. 

9. Black Jesus (2014- Present)

In the off chance that you don't get the offensive bit here, Black Jesus shows Jesus Christ back on planet Earth and selling weed for a living in Compton. If that wasn't enough to rub religious groups the wrong way, Christ also drops a lot of N-bombs around the show. Again, if you like South Park, you'd love this show too. It's hilarious after all. But not everyone's cuppa.

The best thing you can do with your money is travel. No two ways about it. Because at the end of the day, you don't buy something materialistic that you'll forget about in a few days. You invest in an experience, a memory that you will never forget in your life. However, with things only getting more expensive by the year, it is important that we become wise about how we travel. Which is why we did a piece on how to make the perfect travel budget recently. But how do we make sure that we aren't getting ripped off? Let's find out. 

1. Cheap flights

Even though there are a number of comparison apps and websites out there that look for the cheapest flight deals (a good habit, btw), one classic questions still doesn't fail to baffle us time and again - when is the right time to book for flights? Should we book months in advance, or wait right till the nth hour to book one? 

Here's the thing - while many swear by the last minute booking tactic, airline companies are now becoming smarter about this. Especially when it comes to international flights during the holiday season. It really depends on where you're planning to go actually. When you're travelling abroad, especially if it's Europe you fancy, it's best to book well in advance. For example, flights to a famous destination like Spain are cheapest 5 weeks before you actually plan on going. While for a country like Greece, which is going through a rough period currently, booking three weeks in advance should suffice. But you might have to look for tickets a good 12-13 weeks in advance if you're planning a trip to the U.S.  If you still like to book last minute, make sure you're planning travel during the off season. Having said that, the best time to travel will vary from destination to destination. For example -

Australia and New Zealand - Book before December. Book 10-11 months in advance.

The Caribbean - Book between May and September.

Asia - Book between May, June and October.

2. Sign up for alerts

Sign up with websites that send out email alerts and newsletters of cheap flight deals based on your departure city. You'll end up getting surprised with some of the deals. 

3. Social media

Social media might actually end up helping you out here. Follow/Like airline pages for updates on the best deals. Twitter is a very efficient tool in this regard actually. So apart from following travel portals like Sky Scanner and Make My Trip, also follow airline handles. You never know what you end up getting. 

4. The right time to buy

Flight comparing websites will back me up on this. The cheapest days to book are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Friday and Sundays are the busiest, hence the most expensive. Also, early morning flights are the cheapest. Sometimes, booking in the afternoon also helps as discounted flights hit the sites then. Some flight companies also have designated sale time. Like Air New Zealand puts seats up for sale up to 11 months in advance, and has a sale in January and September. Best time to book a Virgin Atlantic is January. Singapore Airlines, between December and February. British Airways, January and September 

5. Avoid flying if possible 

Sure flying is fast, and it gives you more time to spend at the destination, but it's also bloody expensive. So if you are looking to save some time and don't have a crunch for time, try using alternative methods of travel like a train, bus or even driving down for that matter. You might even find a killer cruise ship deal if you keep your eyes and ears open. 

6. Look for a stopover

A direct flight, although, will get you to your destination faster, will also be considerably more expensive than flights that have one or two stopovers. Make the most of this, look for a flight that has a stopover of more than 12 hours. It'll give you the chance to travel a new city as well. Oh yeah, make sure you have a visa for that place. Waiting for hours in an airport can be excruciating otherwise. 

7. Stay

The trick for cheaper hotels is also similar. The most pocket-friendly option would be staying in a hostel. Especially in Europe. Another cheap alternative is AirBnb. But if your heart is set on staying in a hotel, do a comparison of hotel rates and book in advance. Sometimes, booking right before your trip can also help you land a great deal. Some of these would be non-refundable, so you might need to keep that in mind. According to most travel blogs, the best days for finding a room at discounted rates are Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays.

But it ended. I was told not to act

She swiveled on her heels like she twirled just
The other day on a bar stool, the joy
Gone out of it now. Then she walked away.
I called out to her once. She slightly turned.
But she didn’t stop. I called out again.
And that was when, well, that’s just when
You know: You will always be what you were
On that small street at that small time, right when
She left and Pluto sudsed your throat and said,
Puedo escribir los versos más tristes esta noche
Tú la quisiste, y a veces ella también te quiso.

“Much to my surprise, I have found myself as of late writing a cascade of Shakespearean sonnets. They tell a story. Suddenly and from what source I cannot tell you, I have fallen in love with the problem inherent within a sonnet’s concluding couplet; namely, how easily it can take the form of merely anticipated machinery. In the particular case of ‘Washington Mews,’ the concluding couplet is an altered fragment from Neruda’s ‘Poema XX.’ Pluto—the ex-planet, the ruler of the underworld—gets the final words here: note that instead of boasting he takes the liberty to recite. These thoughts came to me after I had written the poem, not during and certainly not before.”

[Fropki] 10 Indian Dishes That Are Beyond Overrated

Like some places and movies, food items too can be overrated. Just because a person likes a particular dish and professes their love for it does not make it mandatory for others to like it as well. 

Here's a list of such dishes that have a lot of undeserved hype around it. Some might be your favourite, but honestly that's where it stops.

1. Rajma Chawal 

Many would agree to disagree on this one. I clearly don't understand the hype around Rajma Chaval. To be honest, it gives me acidity. Why people love to brag about eating rajma chaval is beyond me.

2. Shahi Paneer

Till date, I haven't understood what's so 'shahi' about Shahi Paneer. It's not like we turn into royals after finishing the bowl! It's just paneer dipped in thick gravy. Nothing, absolutely nothing royal about this. 

3. Baingan ka bharta

Before eating baigan ka bharta, I watched how it was cooked. Then I wondered why on earth anyone would do that to a poor baingan! Then I saw people getting emotional while eating it, because it was just so good. For god's sake, it's just mashed brinjal, people!

4. Kaju Katli 

Festivals in India are incomplete without this sweet rhombus covered in silver varkh. Agreed, it has a different taste than the regular mithais, but it clearly isn't worth 700 bucks a kilo!

5. Chinese Bhel

This Indian-Chinese combo is a total disgrace! I mean why would you prefer a Chinese bhel over the simple puffed rice in Indian bhel? Why give Chinese tadka, if our basic desi tadka is enough to make a dish tasty?

6. Pickle

When was the last time you had pickle? Probably with your aloo parathas or with a heavy plate of biryani. But do you remember having just a mound of pickle? No, right? That means we can do away with achaar.

7. Vada Pav

Personally, I love Vada Pav. However, there are many who don't understand the idea of eating smashed fried potato with bread. While Mumbaikars would cry foul with this choice, many North Indians would agree.

8. Dal Makhani

Dal alone is enough to be comfort food. I see no point in adding rajma, urad, butter and cream and making it Dal 2.0.

9. Butter Chicken

Let's agree on one thing - chicken in any form is appetising. Be it chicken tikka masala, chicken 65, chicken Hyderabadi or a simple chicken soup. Butter chicken on the other hand is tasty, but so is chicken 65. There is nothing exceptionally great about butter chicken.

10. Petha

Petha is just ash gourd dipped in sugary syrup. The translucent exterior makes it look like an ordinary sugary candy and frankly it's okay.

Mutability

 
William Wordsworth

From low to high doth dissolution climb,
And sink from high to low, along a scale
Of awful notes, whose concord shall not fail;
A musical but melancholy chime,
Which they can hear who meddle not with crime,
Nor avarice, nor over-anxious care.
Truth fails not; but her outward forms that bear
The longest date do melt like frosty rime,
That in the morning whitened hill and plain
And is no more; drop like the tower sublime
Of yesterday, which royally did wear
His crown of weeds, but could not even sustain
Some casual shout that broke the silent air,
Or the unimaginable touch of Time.

“Mutability” was published in Ecclesiastical Sketches (Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1822).
 

William Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770, in Cockermouth, Cumbria, England. His collections include An Evening Walk (Joseph Johnson, 1793) and Descriptive Sketches (Joseph Johnson, 1793). He died on April 23, 1850.
