This Girl Now Turns Her Body Into Amazing Art
 
Ash Soto was diagnosed with vitiligo when she was 12. As her vitiligo started spreading, she began to feel ashamed of her skin, especially after a little girl asked her if she had showered in bleach. Now the 21-year-old not only isn't ashamed, but she embraces her skin.
 
In her late teens, Soto decided she wouldn't let her skin hold her back anymore, so she started setting herself daily challenges like walking in public without a long sleeve shirt. Eventually, the challenges led to Soto turning her body into beautiful art. "I never realized how beautiful my vitiligo was until I traced it with a black marker, it really helps to bring out the different colors of my skin," Soto said to Daily Mail. Now, she has made her body look like so many different art pieces, including Van Gogh's Starry Night, and she's not stopping! "Now what others would perceive as an imperfection I have made into something more beautiful and made it more accepted than before."

Dear Exile,

 
Mai Der Vang

Never step back    Never a last
Scent of plumeria

 

When my parents left
You knew it was for good 

 

     It's a herd of horses never
           To reclaim their    steppes

 

You became a moth hanging
Down from the sun

 

Old river    Calling to my mother
Kept spilling out of her lungs

 

Ridgeline vista closed
Into the locket of their gaze

 

                     It's the Siberian crane
           Forbidden    to fly back after winter

 

You marbled my father's face
Floated him as stone over the sea

 

Further    Every minute
Emptying his child years to the land

 

You crawled back in your bomb

 

           It's when the banyan must leave
     Relearn to cathedral its roots

About This Poem

 

"My parents came to this country as Hmong refugees from Laos after the country collapsed and the Vietnam War ended. I wrote this poem for them, who were so viciously uprooted and ripped away from their landscape of belonging, all of which had been prompted by a government's political agenda. I grieve for a country that I know they can never truly return to."

María de la Luz Knows How to Walk

 
Juan Felipe Herrera

she ambles toward El Norte she remembers as she steps
wasps & spiders webbed in between the corn in Fowler
her mamá Concha's story the fire she fanned to clear
the path through the thick burned stalks all this
she almost-touches the blueberries in Skagit Washington
& the line of men wrapped as cocoons and dark as amber
flecked honey at the line the only store in Firebaugh where
you can cash your check shirts twisted & whispered & upright
down in Illinois in Cobden you go through the back door
of Darden's bar to buy drinks for the foreman El Cuadrado
María's coming home after returning to Atizapán de Zaragoza
where she works at la Tortillería next to la Señora Muñóz
it is an abyss smoked & metal flat and deep with nixtamal
"Good pay in South Georgia" she says "I'll work the
cucumbers" feet in water skin see-through peels & peels
off & off then on Saturday bussed to Walmart bussed back
to camp season after season the crossing higher alone
or with groups of three the coyote says "I am leaving you
here at the bottom of this mountain you Indians know how
to climb" she remembers Guadalupe Ríos say from the edge
of Santa María Corte in Nayarít "Nosotros los Peyoteros
sabemos caminar We know how to walk" María de la Luz
with an address in her net-bag her son who was taken many
years ago 1346 D Street San Diego will she recognize Juan
is the street still there who is he now who am I now who
will he remember you this ancient trail of grandmothers &
deportadas "I know how to walk" María de la Luz prays
as she ascends the black mountain as she moves her body
tiny as she listens to the sudden rush of things fall among
thorns & hisses María de la Luz notices a band of light

"With this poem I weave the stories I have heard on the road as U.S. Poet Laureate and the stories I have heard travelling as a poet since 1970, as well as those of my own family. It is important to awaken to the realities of human beings that undergo heroic and tragic journeys from Mexico and the Américas en route to El Norte as migrant workers in the face of deportation. They follow family trails established even before the 'border' was installed in the early 20th Century."

[Fropki] Singapore Becomes The World's First Country To Get Driverless Taxis On Its Streets

Singapore became the first city/country to get driverless cars on to its roads, beating tech giant Uber who has been developing the technology for a couple of years now. But before you get ahead of yourselves, Singapore is currently only in the trial stage but passengers do get to ride in the car and for free. 

Select members of the public can hail free rides through their smartphone to get a ride from one of the fleet of driverless cars operated by nuTonomy, an independent vehicle software startup. The company is using Renault and Mitsubishi electric vehicles that have been equipped with the company's software and cameras. Currently nuTonomy is using six cars for the trial and are driving them in a selected part of town. Since the cars are only being tested, there is a driver sat in the passenger seat to ensure maximum safety. 

So why Singapore, you're probably wondering? 

Singapore is already heavily dependent on taxis and most people hail cabs as its cheaper than owning a car. It's also a very organised and disciplined city as is the traffic, which makes Singapore the perfect starting point for driverless cars. nuTonomy hopes to have a complete self-driving fleet in Singapore by 2018.
