"Given to Rust" by Vievee Francis Posted: 17 Nov 2017 03:30 AM PST View this email on a browser Forward to a friend November 17, 2017   Given to Rust   Vievee Francis Every time I open my mouth my teeth reveal more than I mean to. I can't stop tonguing them, my teeth. Almost giddy to know they're still there (my mother lost hers) but I am embarrassed nonetheless that even they aren't pretty. Still, I did once like my voice, the way it moved through the gap in my teeth like birdsong in the morning, like the slow swirl of a creek at dusk. Just yesterday a woman closed her eyes as I read aloud, and said she wanted to sleep in the sound of it, my voice. I can still sing some. Early cancer didn't stop the compulsion to sing but there's gravel now. An undercurrent that also reveals me. Time and disaster. A heavy landslide down the mountain. When you stopped speaking to me what you really wanted was for me to stop speaking to you. To stifle the sound of my voice. I know. Didn't want the quicksilver of it in your ear. What does it mean to silence another? It means I ruminate on the hit of rain against the tin roof of childhood, how I could listen all day until the water rusted its way in. About This Poem   "There are few things worse than being silenced, than having one's voice stifled. In my twenties I lost my singing voice to cancer. Now, the spoken word, conversation, vocalization itself is vital and deeply personal to me, and as much a part of my understanding of self and being as inscription. There are those who cannot stand to hear the truth and are willing to allow harm to not have to listen. I have known such people, and even held them close. But in this poem I hope to convey the consequences of silencing can be dire. You may also like: The Successful Tennis Player Build Your Self-Confidence with These Fun Activities   Self-confidence helps us believe that we can handle whatever task or challenge comes our way. We could all use a little more of that. However, it's easy to get bogged down with reading and acquiring information. Many people are too busy planning, and lack the confidence, to take action. Planning is important, but if you fail to implement your plan, you won't see results.   Try these activities and boost your confidence today:   1. Try getting specific. Are you confident in your ability to brush your teeth, tie your shoes, and drive a car? Probably so! You likely have more self-confidence than you realize. List some situations where you'd like to feel more self-confident. Some examples might include dating situations, public speaking, meeting new people, being more assertive at work, or dealing with conflict.   2. Create a self-confidence blueprint. Take a few minutes and jot down about a half-page of notes regarding the specific situation where you desire greater self-confidence. How would you act? How would you look to others? How would you feel? Think about your body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, and breathing.   Ensure that you define and understand what self-confidence looks like to you. It's difficult to accomplish "it" if you're unsure what "it" is.   3. Everything is easier in hindsight. Imagine that you've already been through the situation in question. Visualize yourself being incredibly self-confident. Put in as much detail as possible. See yourself acting in accordance with the criteria you listed in the previous step.   Do this visualization at least once a day until it's 100% believable to you. Then you can try out your newfound self-confidence during the situation in question. Avoid expecting perfection and focus on personal growth.   4. Get physical. Attempt to sit, walk, talk, and act like a confident person. Intentionally try to take on the physical characteristics of someone that's brimming with self-confidence. Smile and stand up straight. Use good eye contact.   Before you realize it, this will become a habit. Your current physicality is merely a poor habit. Form a new, positive habit of using confident body language.   5. Stretch yourself. Come up with a list of activities that will stretch your confidence muscles. It can be little tasks that you find slightly uncomfortable. As they become more comfortable, you can concentrate on more difficult tasks.   Suppose you have a fear of approaching beautiful women. You could start out by going to the mall and saying "Hello!" to 25 beautiful women that pass by. The next day, you could ask 25 beautiful women for directions. The following day you can compliment 25 beautiful women, and so on.   Building self-confidence requires action   Take some time each day to work on your self-confidence. There are few things that will have a greater positive impact on your life than increasing the level of confidence you have in yourself.   Create an action plan and stick to it. Self-confidence can be very easy to build if you make the effort. A little work can result in huge rewards. Not the man who called my life a debacle, a word whose sound I love. In a debacle things are unleashed. Roots of words are like knots I think when I read the dictionary. I read other books, sure. Recently I learned how trees communicate, the way they send sugar through their roots to the trees that are ailing. They don't use words, but they can be said to love. They might lean in one direction to leave a little extra light for another           tree. And I admire the way they grow right through fences, nothing stops them, it's called inosculation: to unite by openings, to connect or join so as to become or make continuous, from osculare, to provide with a mouth, from osculum, little mouth. Sometimes when I'm alone I go outside with my big little mouth and speak to the trees as if I were a birch among birches.            Copyright © 2017 Catherine Barnett. "We Named You Mercy " by Amanda Johnson Posted: 14 Nov 2017 03:30 AM PST View this email on a browser Forward to a friend November 14, 2017   We Named You Mercy   Amanda Johnston               after Gwendolyn Brooks   I count the years after you, know your would-be ages and remember the sadness that consumed me with the bitter sound of you, my almost-children. Could not conceive in conceiving you our muted heat and all that got through heaven's gate to become that half-wing that was your soul. Was you. I saw your face once and, yes, I did kiss your cheeks and cry for your sweet not- quite nose, not-quite lips. Would I get another chance to see you if I held the knife? Cold, the sterile taker's tools, my hands, bloody and damp. In the darkness, I felt your toes bloom small petals against my ribs. Your closed eyes, pulps of possibility. Did you see me? The one with empty arms stretching to embrace a a silhouette of you? A ghost with little more than hope for history. Or did I make that up to keep you with me a little longer? Did you stay until the no I set upon your body untangled itself from sprigs of hair and released you from the softness that tethered you to the love in our cold mercy? Quieted blues, your singers whose band tucked away their baritone horns and my chosen grief. How those little workers of sadness gathered me up, my heart, that splintered with your hard stop.
