Kimberley Garner's Busts Wanting to Jump Out

Let's face it – we can't bring ourselves to eat food that doesn't have plenty of mirch and masala.. But did you know, that apart from flavour, these spices are loaded with tons of health benefits? Find out what they are!

1. Turmeric (Haldi)

This bright orange spice has been used in Ayurvedic remedies for years. Curcumin, its main ingredient, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and can help treat arthritis and infections. Turmeric also treats heartburn, stomach aches, diarrhoea, gas, bloating, and loss of appetite.

2. Coriander (Dhania)

These fragrant seeds contain two oils that are powerful antioxidants with anti-rheumatic and anti-arthritic properties. Coriander helps reduce swelling, lowers cholesterol, treats diarrhoea, lowers blood pressure, improves bone health and boosts digestion.

3. Asafoetida (Hing)

Asafoetida is obtained from the latex gum of the Ferula plant, which is then dried and powdered. Loaded with powerful medicinal properties, it is only used in small quantities, but it regulates your digestion, gets rid of gas and can make menstrual cramps less painful.

4. Chilli (Mirchi)

Chillies are loaded with Vitamins A, B, C and E, and are also rich in potassium, magnesium and iron. Adding chilli to your food can lower your cholesterol and insulin levels, and improve your heart health. They can even help keep cancer and insomnia at bay!

5. Cumin (Jeera)

The subtle scent of cumin that you smell in most Indian homes is due to cuminaldehyde, an organic oil that is the active compound in this flavourful spice. Cumin reduces hypoglycaemia, and helps relieve stress, thereby promoting better sleep. Cuminaldehyde can treat respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis, as well as piles. Rich in iron, cumin is good for lactating mothers and can prevent anaemia as well.

6. Mustard (Rye)

Both mustard seeds and mustard oil have a rich flavour that is derived from phytonutrients. They protect against ageing and cancer, lower cholesterol, relieve arthritic pain and can even help you lose weight. Mustard also improves immunity and boosts hair growth!

7. Black pepper (Kalimirch)

Black pepper is a spice that originated in India and is now used in several cuisines around the world. It improves digestion, prevents constipation, enables weight loss, cures colds and coughs and fights infections.

8. Cardamom (Elaichi)

Used primarily in tea, but in other dishes as well, cardamom detoxifies your body, boosts digestion, lowers blood pressure, reduces inflammation and infections and may even fight cancer and depression.

9. Cloves (Lavang)

These flower-like pods are also commonly used in Ayurvedic medicines. Your grandmother has probably told you to chew a clove if you have a toothache, to relieve the pain and soothe the infection. Cloves also treat respiratory infections, boost digestion and reduce arthritis-related inflammation.

10. Cinnamon (Dalchini)

This fragrant spice is actually the bark of the Cinnamomum tree! Loaded with antioxidants, it reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and may even keep cognitive decline at bay. For those of you who are trying to lose weight, cinnamon can help torch that fat, especially around your middle!

11. Bay leaves (Tej pata)

While these leaves are not eaten, they can be added to food to lend it both flavour and nutrition. They have been used to treat liver, stomach and kidney problems for centuries, but they can also help control diabetes and treat body pain and headaches.
