About This Poem

 

"blessing the boats" appeared in Quilting: Poems 1987–1990 (BOA Editions, 1991).

 

Lucille Clifton was born in Depew, New York, in 1936. She was the author of several poetry collections, including Blessing the Boats: New and Selected Poems 1988–2000 (BOA Editions, 2000), which won the National Book Award, and Good Woman: Poems and a Memoir 1969–1980 (BOA Editions, 1987), which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. She served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets from 1999 to 2005. She died in 2010.
