We've all heard infamous stories about Bollywood casting couches, and I guess many of us believe them to be somewhat true. However, slowly but gradually, talent is what wins, even in Bollywood. But what about back in the days, when Bollywood was considered a taboo and people who worked in it were looked down upon? I'm talking the 1950s here, people.

 

Check out these pictures believed to be from a movie audition back in 1951! These were taken by James Burke for Life Magazine, and capture how directors auditioned their heroines. The man in these pictures is A R Kardar of Kardar Productions. Kardar who? The man responsible for directing films like Shahjehan (1946), Dillagi (1949), Dulari (1949), Dil Diya Dard Liya (1966) and more.

 

Now before you brand these pictures as sleazy, it depends on your perception. For some, these could be instructive. Perhaps the director really was a perfectionist and had an eye for detail. And for the others, well, you know, people judge! But whatever the case, these pictures are pure gold and give us an insight on how Bollywood was back in the 50s.
