Dear Friend, I’m writing today to thank you for being a part of our community of people who support and advocate for poetry and poets. I’m also reaching out with a request that has become even more critical in recent months. In my travels across the United States, I’ve witnessed how eager teachers are to incorporate poetry into their classes and provide students with an opportunity to learn a subject through a creative-language lens. Yet, poetry is taught less and less in schools, and now federal funding for arts and education programs is in jeopardy. This National Poetry Month, please donate to help provide resources for teachers to continue making poetry an integral part of their classroom activities. The Academy of American Poets is the leading poetry organization providing resources—all of which are free—to K-12 educators. From lesson plans to Teach This Poem activities to projects like Dear Poet, last year more than 50,000 educators relied on materials from Poets.org. This month we are working to raise $35,000 to support the Academy of American Poets’ education program, which relies on donations from people like you who believe that poetry is a vital resource. Supporting the arts and education in this moment is critical. Please join me in making a contribution to ensure the Academy’s work can continue and grow in the year ahead. Our poets are citizen journalists, activists, heroes, the narrators of our democracy-in-progress. Students should have an opportunity to hear their stories—especially now. Thank you for your support! Sincerely, Richard Blanco P.S. We’re grateful for your support at any level. In special thanks for your gift of $30 or more, we are happy to send either our new Gwendolyn Brooks centennial magnet, or the latest issue of our journal, American Poets. Donate today to claim your gift! |
