Irina Shayk - Vogue Germany Magazine (April 2018)

Trying to avoid getting sick every now and then? Here are a few tips that might help you to stay healthy.

1. Stay active

Exercising is the best thing you can do to stay healthy. It helps to control stress, improve sleep, boost mood and reduces the risk of falling sick too often.

2. Get good sleep

Lack of sleep can affect our immune system; and can make us prone to catching cold and flu. Our immune system is designed to protect us from illness, but when it's not functioning properly it can lead to more sick days.

3. Have balanced and healthy diet

We can't completely fight the viruses and bacteria which float around us! But we can certainly give our immune systems a better chance at preventing illness before they strike us. Eating well isn't just about weight loss; it's about making your immune system healthy as well. Good nutrition and good health are intertwined.

4. Avoid using plastic water bottle

No doubt the plastic water bottles are quite convenient to carry but according to the researches storing or drinking water in plastic can be carcinogenic and can have adverse effect on the immune system as well. The best and the safest way is to store water is in glass bottles.

5. Take more sunlight and fresh air

Constantly being indoors puts you in close contact with people and their germs. This is why it is important to be in sunlight and take fresh air to get rid of germs. A happy stroll not only will give you a break from all those germs but can actually boost your immunity.

6. Don't touch your face often

Viral or bacterial infections are easily spread through touch. Make sure that you keep your fingers or hands away from eyes, nose and mouth as much possible and also make sure to clean your hands often.

[Fropki] 11 Places You Have To Eat At In Amritsar

Kamal Hassan's Daughter Fond of Showing BUSTS

Amritsar lies in the heart of Punjab and is home to the iconic Golden Temple. It beckons travellers from all over the world in search of healing and happiness, a voice in the wind to tell them that everything will be alright.

Not only is it the home of the Sikh religion, but Amritsar is also a culinary capital of India that seems to be shadowed by other cities. This is what we recommend, if paet puja (stomach worship) is on top of your priority list.

1. Guru Ka Langar

If the Golden Temple is number one on your list, we strongly suggest you partake in the Guru Ka Langar. Langar is a community feast prepared in a kitchen within the temple premises on a large scale (for at least 40,000 people). Everybody is welcome and is seated in rows while they are served by volunteers. The devotion of service to community is absolutely tear jerking. Jostling with other devotees and visitors for a taste of Kada Prasad is worth it, considering that it has a taste like no other. Maybe it's because discrimination and inequality are things that are not tolerated within the walls of the temple.

2. Bharawan Da Dhaba

If being in Punjab makes you crave those stereotypical Punjabi delights, you've come to the right place. Makki ki roti with sarson da saag, stuffed kulchas (potatoes or paneer) with chhole are just some things that they do better than any place in Delhi or London.

Do keep in mind, Bharawan is "pure veg" due to their close proximity to the Golden Temple. But don't let that hamper your decision just because you're a hardcore meat-eater. The kebabs can wait.

3. Paya at Pal Da Dhaba

Probably not something you would get used to, but hooves are a delicacy and we know just the place. Located near the Hathi Gate, the Dhaba is run by its proprietor who is also the iron chef in the kitchen.

A simple broth spiced with garam masala, chilli and lentil leaves and generously blessed with pieces of hooves, the dish is best paired with kheema paratha, although it breaks into a million pieces in your hand.

4. Chicken Tikka Tandoori, Beera Chicken Corner

Featured on the popular television series Highway On My Plate, Beera's isn't fancy but the food is divine! Seating is limited, so if you plan to enjoy it in your car, your hosts would be most obliged to serve you.

The Chicken Tikka is perfectly spiced and goes well with a keeema naan. If things get too dry, a spicy gravy accompaniment is offered for free and you can always get your own booze.

5. Mutton Chaap, Adarsh Meat Shop

Finding this place might a be bit of a challenge, but if you get to C-Block Market Complex near Rose Garden, the locals will know what you're looking for. Your frustration might double as you'll have to queue up to make an order. But seriously, it is worth the wait. Shallow fried and slow cooked, the tender succulent meat comes right off the rib with a spicy and sour flavour. Do try the mutton tikka if you're still drooling after the chaap

6. Ahuja Lassi

These guys are the benchmark for, you guessed it, Lassi (duh).

Situated near the Hindu College and Durgiana Temple, every autowallah knows how to get here so you're not alone. Churned the way lassi is, the Ahuja's secret ingredient is a natural essence the many patrons still cannot decipher. The original lassi is hands down the best so far, and we suggest a tall steel glass of it first thing in the morning.

7. Bheja Fry, Mame Da Dhaba

Two words. Goat brains. Ewww for some, yum for many. The proprietor, who calls himself 'mama', will chop the brain and fry it with spices and herbs. There's no curry and the dish retains an original colour. It melts in the mouth with a hint of spice. Paired with naan and dollops of butter, you'll down this combo in no time!

8. Jalebi, Sharma Sweet Shop

Gigantic and not-so-syrupy, the crunchiness makes their jalebis all the more fun to eat.

9. Fruit cream and Kulfa, Hall Bazaar

The former is a shaved ice-like concoction of fruit, cream and dry fruit. It is served in a huge portion but no one can have enough. Kulfa is the Amritsari cousin of the more familiar Kulfi, which is an ice cream of sorts, topped with spaghetti-like falooda.

10. Pinni, Kanha Sweets

Pinni are sweetmeats or laddoo made from lentil and jaggery and are a popular souvenir from Amritsar. Kanha Sweets also has amazing halwas and besan laddoos

11. Gajar Ka Halwa, Novelty Sweets

Bluntly chopped and not as pretty as you'd imagine, this Gajar ka halwa caught my surprise. It wasn't too sweet nor was it dripping with ghee, the carrots had a sweet and tangy taste that most halwas are generally deprived off due to khoya

My Nothings

Ama Codjoe
Ama Codjoe reads "My Nothings."

About This Poem

"This poem is from a series addressed to unconceived/unborn children whose imagined desires align and compete with those of the speaker. I wanted to create an image-system held together by longing and sound. Much of the poem is concerned with constructing the 'you,' these unreal and fleshly beings."
—Ama Codjoe

Ama Codjoe received a 2017 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award to support the completion of her first poetry collection, "Iterations of Being." She serves as visiting assistant professor of social justice and inclusion at The New School in New York City, where she lives.

[Fropki] 11 Spices That Are A Must In Every Indian Kitchen

Kimberley Garner's Busts Wanting to Jump Out

Let's face it – we can't bring ourselves to eat food that doesn't have plenty of mirch and masala.. But did you know, that apart from flavour, these spices are loaded with tons of health benefits? Find out what they are!

1. Turmeric (Haldi)

This bright orange spice has been used in Ayurvedic remedies for years. Curcumin, its main ingredient, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and can help treat arthritis and infections. Turmeric also treats heartburn, stomach aches, diarrhoea, gas, bloating, and loss of appetite.

2. Coriander (Dhania)

These fragrant seeds contain two oils that are powerful antioxidants with anti-rheumatic and anti-arthritic properties. Coriander helps reduce swelling, lowers cholesterol, treats diarrhoea, lowers blood pressure, improves bone health and boosts digestion.

3. Asafoetida (Hing)

Asafoetida is obtained from the latex gum of the Ferula plant, which is then dried and powdered. Loaded with powerful medicinal properties, it is only used in small quantities, but it regulates your digestion, gets rid of gas and can make menstrual cramps less painful.

4. Chilli (Mirchi)

Chillies are loaded with Vitamins A, B, C and E, and are also rich in potassium, magnesium and iron. Adding chilli to your food can lower your cholesterol and insulin levels, and improve your heart health. They can even help keep cancer and insomnia at bay!

5. Cumin (Jeera)

The subtle scent of cumin that you smell in most Indian homes is due to cuminaldehyde, an organic oil that is the active compound in this flavourful spice. Cumin reduces hypoglycaemia, and helps relieve stress, thereby promoting better sleep. Cuminaldehyde can treat respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis, as well as piles. Rich in iron, cumin is good for lactating mothers and can prevent anaemia as well.

6. Mustard (Rye)

Both mustard seeds and mustard oil have a rich flavour that is derived from phytonutrients. They protect against ageing and cancer, lower cholesterol, relieve arthritic pain and can even help you lose weight. Mustard also improves immunity and boosts hair growth!

7. Black pepper (Kalimirch)

Black pepper is a spice that originated in India and is now used in several cuisines around the world. It improves digestion, prevents constipation, enables weight loss, cures colds and coughs and fights infections.

8. Cardamom (Elaichi)

Used primarily in tea, but in other dishes as well, cardamom detoxifies your body, boosts digestion, lowers blood pressure, reduces inflammation and infections and may even fight cancer and depression.

9. Cloves (Lavang)

These flower-like pods are also commonly used in Ayurvedic medicines. Your grandmother has probably told you to chew a clove if you have a toothache, to relieve the pain and soothe the infection. Cloves also treat respiratory infections, boost digestion and reduce arthritis-related inflammation.

10. Cinnamon (Dalchini)

This fragrant spice is actually the bark of the Cinnamomum tree! Loaded with antioxidants, it reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and may even keep cognitive decline at bay. For those of you who are trying to lose weight, cinnamon can help torch that fat, especially around your middle!

11. Bay leaves (Tej pata)

While these leaves are not eaten, they can be added to food to lend it both flavour and nutrition. They have been used to treat liver, stomach and kidney problems for centuries, but they can also help control diabetes and treat body pain and headaches.

[Fropki] 7 TV Shows That Made Doordarshan Of The 80s The Best

Samyukta Really Desperate to show her BUSTS

If you have had enough of made-up reality TV and saas-bahu dramas, may we remind you that TV used to be a good thing till a while back. There used to be just a couple of channels and Doordarshan was the final word in entertainment.

Remember this Doordarshan promo?

Moving on. Thanks to YouTube, you can now relive the good old days and board the nostalgia train. Here?s a small list of must-watch TV shows to keep you entertained this week. On the other hand, for those of you who can?t relate to any of this, it?s a great lesson on why TV used to be great.

1. Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984)

India?s first ever sitcom, the show was a roaring success when it aired in 1984.. The stories revolved around the lives of Ranjit Verma (Shafi Inamdar), his wife Renu Verma (Swaroop Sampat)  and her unemployed brother Raja (Rakesh Bedi). Satish Shah used to play a different character every episode and was even dubbed the ?King of Comedy?. The title track was sung by Kishore Kumar.

2. Malgudi Days (1986)

Each episode of the show was based on a story from R K Narayan?s works such as Swami and Friends and The Vendor of Sweets, among others. The show was set in the fictional town of Malgudi and depicted India?s village life and the everyday struggles of the people living there. These are usually small things such as the mail going missing or 9-year-old Swami mistaking an intruder for a ghost and getting scared.

3. Fauji (1989)

Everybody knows this one. Shah Rukh Khan plays Abhimanyu Rai, a commando in the Indian Army undergoing training. Although only a total of 13 episodes were aired in 1988, the show had a cult following in later years, thanks to SRK becoming a big star. Want a bonus fact? While most people think this was King Khan?s first TV appearance, it was actually his second.

4. Hum Log (1984)

The 154 episodes of India?s first soap opera aired between 1984 and 1985. Audiences easily related to the characters of Basesar, Lalloo, Majhli, Chhutki and Dadi from a middle class family and the actors became overnight stars. What really made the show famous was the monologue at the end of each episode by legendary actor Ashok Kumar which usually ended with the words ?Hum Log?.

5. Nukkad (1986)

Another cult show from the 80s is Nukkad. The show was about the struggles of the people living and working near the corner of a street. Hence, the name Nukkad. A number of characters that became famous were the loveable drunkard Khopdi, the kind and generous Kadar Bhai and the local strong man with a heart of gold, Guru. A reboot called Naya Nukkad was also launched, but never achieved the same success.

6. Mr. Yogi (1989)

Yogesh Ishwarlal Patel (Mohan Gokhale), a.k.a Mr. Yogi, returns from America, to find himself an Indian wife and meets 12 prospective brides over the course of the show. Unfortunately there?s something or the other that goes wrong. Say, a girl being taller than Mr. Yogi. Om Puri narrated the show and in his narrative, makes fun of the tribulations of our hero. Mr. Yogi gets his own back when he finally meets the girl of his dreams, who also happens to be the daughter of the narrator.

7. Wagle Ki Duniya (1988)

R K Laxman?s common man found himself on the telly in the form of Srinivas Wagle, a bumbling sales clerk in Wagle Ki Duniya. Laxman also narrated the show and created all the characters. Anjan Srivastav and Bharati Achrekar are brilliant as Srinivas and Radhika Wagle. Some memorable episodes include the one where he?s conned into buying a bad car and another where he does the rounds of the licensing officer.

[Fropki] 9 Reasons Why Plants Make Your Workplace So Much Better

Apart from the fact that your desk will look much better, plants are great for your health! You might find the idea a little strange initially, but once you get a plant and start to water it every day, you will actually start to care for the little guy!

Check out these health benefits of having an office plant.

1. Lower stress

Workplaces can be extremely stressful environments, but having a plant on your desk can help counter some of that stress and keep you more relaxed.

2. Higher productivity

Multiple research studies have found that in addition to lowering stress, plants increase productivity as well. The two are actually related – you've probably noticed that when you're super stressed out, you can barely get anything done.

3.. Better air quality

Today's enclosed office spaces have extremely poor ventilation, making them hotbeds for harmful germs and toxins. Plants work like filtration systems, absorbing the harmful agents and purifying the air.

4. More comfortable working conditions

Your plant doubles up as your personal air conditioner and humidifier as well. Plants carry out a process known as transpiration, which cools the air and releases moisture into the atmosphere, thereby making your workplace more comfortable.

5. Healthier skin

Sitting in an air conditioned office all day can cause your skin to dry up, but having plants around you can prevent that. The moisture that plants emit can help raise the humidity levels, bringing them closer to normal and thereby protecting your skin. Dry skin is more prone to wrinkles, since it stiffens and cracks easily.

6. Fewer sick days

Having plants all over the office has actually been shown to reduce employee sickness rates considerably.

7. More creativity

Research has found that introducing plants into an office environment can up the creativity quotient by a whopping 15 percent!

8. Less noise

Your plant may not accomplish this one alone, but a bunch of plants might do the trick. Plants absorb sound and can help lower the overall noise level by about 5 decibels. That's actually one of the reasons why they are planted on highways!

9. More happiness

Research shows that interacting with nature in any way has a profound effect on our psyche, increasing our sense of well-being and making us happier on a subconscious level.

We have learnt in Indian history that temples in ancient times were once social hubs where people congregated. They were also sites where the arts of dance, music and combat were honed and have been passed down for generations. Today, these temples remind us of our past and the architectural brilliance of craftsmen in those days.

1. Brihadeshwara Temple, Tanjore, Tamil Nadu

Built by King Rajaraja Chola in 1002 AD, this temple was dedicated to Shiva and is the finest example of Dravidian art. The Brihadeshwara temple combines the best in the tradition of temple building - architecture, sculpture, painting and other allied arts. It is composed of many interconnected structures such as the Nandi pavilion, a pillared portico and a large hall. Its vimana (the roof like structure that towers above the sanctum sanctorum or main shrine) is 66 metres high.

2. Kailashnath Temple, Ellora

This was built as a dedication to Lord Shiva, the destroyer. It is a tribute to man's greatness, even though academia have not given it its due place in our school history syllabus. It was carved in perfect proportion and alignment to its adjacent structures, which include columns, flying bridges, stone arches, and statues and buildings - all made out of a single piece of rock.

3. Chennakeshava Temple, Karnataka

Situated on the banks of the Yagachi river, this temple was an early masterpiece of the Hoysala Period. It was built by the Vijayanagara ruler to commemorate their victory over the Cholas and is solely dedicated to Vishnu as most of the figural carvings depict aspects of Vishnu, particularly the incarnations and the God seated with Lakshmi.

4. Tugnath Temple, Uttarakhand

At an elevation of 3680 metres above sea level, the Tugnath Temple is the highest elevated of the Panch Kedar, the others are Madhyamaheshwar, Kedarnath, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar. The temple is connected to the Ramayana where Lord Ram meditated to release the curse of Brahmahatya for having slaughtered Ravana. The temple is quite small, and hence only 10 people are allowed in at a time.

5. Adi Kumbeswarar, Tamil Nadu

Located in the temple town of India, Kumbhakonam, this temple dates back to the Vijaynagara period. Adi Kumbeswarar is the presiding deity of the temple and the shrine is located in the centre. Kumbeswarar is in the form a lingam believed to have been made by Shiva himself when he mixed the nectar of immortality and sand.

6. Jagatpita Brahma Mandir, Rajasthan

Although the structure of this temple dates back to the 14th century, this temple is said to be 2000 years old. The temple is mainly built of marble and stone slabs. It has a distinct red pinnacle and a bird motif. The temple sanctum sanctorum holds the central images of Brahma and his second consort Gayatri. It witnesses a festival dedicated to Brahma during the Kartik Purnima.

7. Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Tamil Nadu

Varadharaja Perumal Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the holy city of Kanchipuram. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu believed to have been visited by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. It is believed that the lizard sculptures that adorn the ceilings of the temple when touched forgive the sins of your past life.

8. Konark Sun Temple, Odisha

This temple was built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty around AD 1250. The temple is in the shape of a gigantic chariot with elaborately carved stone wheels, pillars and walls. A major part of the structure is now in ruins. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

9. Dilwara Temples near Mount Abu, Rajasthan

Located about 2.5 km from Mount Abu, each of these five temples are unique in their own way and were built between the 11th and 13th century AD and are remarkable for their stunning use of marble. These five temples (Vimal Vasahi, Luna Vasahi, Pittalhar Temple, Parshvanatha Temple and Mahavir Swami Temple) are considered the most beautiful Jain pilgrimage sites in the world.

10. Pancha Ratna Temple, Bankura, West Bengal

Built in 1643 by King Raghunath Singha, this temple stands on a low square plinth and consists of an ambulatory pathway with a porch opened by three arches on the four sides of the temple. The walls are richly decorated with terracotta carvings featuring aspects of Lord Krishna?s life.

11. Badami Cave Temples, Karnataka

The Badami cave temples are a complex of temples located at Badami, a town in the Bagalkot District in the northern part of Karnataka, India. They are considered an example of Indian rock-cut architecture, especially Badami Chalukya Architecture.

12. Vittala Temple, Hampi, Karnataka

Perhaps one of the most popular of all the temples in the Hampi complex, this houses the famous musical pillars that have amazing acoustics. The British wanted to find out the reason behind this, and so they cut two pillars to check if there was anything inside that was producing the sound. They found nothing but hollow pillars.

The road leading to the temple was once a market where horses were traded. Even today we can see the ruins of the market on both the sides of the road. The temple contains images of foreigners like Persians selling horses.

13. Orchha Temples, Madhya Pradesh

Orchha is another famous tourist spot located near the famous Khajuraho Temple. The town has Chaturbhuj Temple, Lakshmi Temple and Ram Raja Temple.

The Chaturbhuj temple is imposing with tall spires built atop a high platform. Its exterior is richly ornamented with lotus symbols. The Raja Ram Temple resembles a palace as the Ram is worshiped as a king here.

The Lakshmi Temple is an odd mixture of temple and fort and an unique mixture of concentric forms. It consists of an octagonal central tower inside a triangular temple. In line with this eccentricity, the entrance gate is set in a corner rather than the wall.

Nondisabled Demands

Jillian Weise
Listen to this poem.

About This Poem

"This poem comes from real advice and performance art. Someone told me I had to come out and state my disability in every poem I write. This made me wonder: Who does poetry serve? What is poetry's idea of itself? To dodge those questions, I began performing as Tipsy Tullivan across social media. She is a nondisabled writer from Asswallascallacauga, Alabama. She doesn't write poetry, but she's likely in the collective 'we' of this poem."

—Jillian Weise

Jillian Weise is a poet and performance artist. Her poetry collections include The Amputee's Guide to Sex (Soft Skull Press, 2007) and The Book of Goodbyes (BOA Editions, 2013), which won the Academy of American Poets James Laughlin Award in 2013.
